My girlfriend and I love going to Mama's Meatball. Always a perfect spot for a romantic date night with amazing food and superb service!
Graduation weekend in San Luis Obispo is huge and warrants a lot of celebration. I'd heard a lot about Mama's Meatball but had never actually been there.
I made a reservation for 2, one for me and one for the new graduate. The purpose was to celebrate her accomplishments and enjoy a nice meal.
Upon arriving, we were served quickly due to our reservation via open table (highly recommend as the wait time for others was well over an hour). Once we were seated, it started going downhill from there. There didn't seem to be a lot of communication amongst the waiters.
In the span of 1 minute, 3 waiters asked if we either wanted water and if we were ready to order. I understand we made a reservation, but that doesn't mean we know what we wanted right off the bat.
When we were ready to order, we ordered very distinctly by pointing at the menu (as we didn't want to offend anyone with our pronunciation). We got the side of bread, and two pastas.
The bread came out and it was fantastic.
Then the pastas came out, and that's when the dinner went the wrong way. One order was correct (an awesome steak pasta), and another was incorrect. We had ordered a seafood pasta with clams and salmon. I remember because it was the last item in the pasta section of the menu. However, they brought a pasta topped with tomatoes. When we brought this mistake to the waitresses attention, she said "no, you ordered this one." and showed us her scratch pad, where she had written down an order that didn't match ours. From there, she took the pasta and went to her manager and came back. Rather than tell us there was a mistake on their end (which their clearly was) or that we could substitute and pay the difference, she said "you ordered the wrong one, you made the mistake. If this isn't what you want, I don't know what I can do for you. Here are some bread knots"
This is the first time that i've ever had a restaurant tell me I ordered the wrong thing and not acknowledge it was their mistake.
This is our go-to spot when in SLO. Consistently excellent food - all salads are so fresh from the farm...love the beet salad, pear and Gorgonzola, and Cesar...cant go wrong with any of them. Pasta is fresh, sauces flavorful, family special orchietta is awesome, as are lasagne, chicken parm...can you tell we are fans? Garlic bread nuggets are unique and addictive. And don’t forget desserts, even if taking them to go (a good option). And now that they have remodeled the area and attracted more restaurants, there is a buzz in the air.
I have always loved this place! Extremely tasty and they have amazing dessert!!
Service was very slow didn't show up for 15 min. Waited on by 3 different people. Food came out cool, overcooked seafood, wrong sides, just a very bad experience as we have been here dozens of times over the years. And the prices have increased and portions decreased.
After numerous visits ,all positive in the past, I was very disappointed this time. Can you believe an Italian restaurant without Chianti? Not on the wine list! Service was given by people I’ve never seen before. I’m guessing there is a total turnover of waitstaff. Let them know it was a birthday celebration, why bother? Not a word. Disappointed!
Everything was great however we noted on our reservation that we were celebrating an anniversary (50 years) and no one in the restaurant even mentioned it.
We always have a good experience at Mama's Meatball. Reasonably priced, good wine selection, and since the remodel, good ambiance.
We frequent MM’s and we love it there. The prices are reasonable and the food is great!
Every time I come to Mamas Meatball and I am surrounded by amazingly gracious and informed staff that seem like family I wonder why I don’t come more often! Prices are reasonably, staff are experts and share their knowledge in a friendly and welcoming manner, and the food is stunning!!!! Yes just say yes to Mamas Meatballs! Locally owned, best authentic food experience that won’t make you wince when the check is presented.
Mama's Meatball was a new place for this Cal Poly family to try for Mother's Day dinner and we WILL be back. Tucked in the back of what seems like a mall it was an oasis of calm and fabulous food. Noise level was fine but the restaurant was not full so with the high ceiling and hard surfaces it might get noisy.
Food was really good. For the price it would be nice to have a larger portion. Penne with sausage was yummy! Watch your tab....we were a party of 5 and they added a 20% gratuity...despite the menu saying they only do this for 6 or more. I almost ended up double tipping as I wasn't expecting it to be added.
Was a beautiful restaurant. Great service. We will definitely be back to try more items on the menu.
Been meaning to go to MAMA'S MEATBALL for a while...and we are glad we did...
Started with wine...The Chianti and the Tempranillo were fully bodied and tasty.
The main courses of Baked Penne and Veal Scaloppini (Parmesan) were both prepared and served very nicely.
Nice large portions...so, regretfully, we did not have room for dessert.
We will be back!
Appetizers raised hopes for a good meal, but dinner was a disappointment. Over 50 minutes passed from when appetizers were served to when dinner arrived. Food was ok, but over priced for the quality, particularly after the long wait. Don't think we'll go back anytime soon, they probably need some time to get into their groove.
We went to Mama’s Meatball to celebrate our son’s birthday and the food did not disappoint. We all had delicious meals and would recommend this restaurant to all pasta lovers. The Lasagne was our number one but my Carbonara was wonderful. The only downside was the original table we were given was right by the bathroom door and it was quite loud so we mentioned it and luckily we got moved with no problems.
We have been to Mama's Meatball many times, and we love it. This time, we brought two other couples with us, and they thought the food was great! We live in Southern California, but will continue to make this restaurant one of our top priority eating places when we visit the SLO area.
The service was great and the food was good. Our table was a little cramped. Wine selection was decent.
Everyone who had been there before agreed that the food tasted even better than our last visit! They also accommodated two extras in our party with no problem.
WE have been at Mama's before and food and service is outstanding.
Food was great. Service was ok but they charge 20% for that in the bill.
Mama’s Meatball was a nice surprise! Atmosphere was just so-so , honestly pretty tacky. But... food and service was wonderful! We were with a group of teenagers and they all loved it. Would recommend for groups with young people.
We went here the other night before a show at SLO Rep. We split the penne with eggplant and the mushroom risotto. The risotto needed salt but otherwise was good. It was hard to detect the eggplant in the rigatoni although it was cheesy. Service was a little slow especially as we were preparing to leave.
Nice place in a charming little square hidden from the street. The restaurant looks fairly new. Our waiter treated us at the front desk and (didn’t get his name) he was fabulous throughout.
The food was really good - all the pastas fresh and tasted homemade. I asked how good the carbonara was - “1st generation good” he replied, explaining that the chefs are 1st gen Italians and make it Kiel they do at home.
It was good - really good.
They have s small wine list and pour at the table - really nice touch to leave the bottle when there was less than a a glass left in it - for us to finish off.
We will be back!
We found this restaurant 5 years ago and loved the homemade Italian food and knowledgeable waitstaff We make it a point to stop every time we travel the central coast- ( 3x a year) with our now teenage kids. It changed ownership or management thus last visit. It was an uncomfortable visit as we all realized it’s not the same. Awful service( water glasses empty the entire meal) inconsistent portions on the dishes. Really a struggle. Very sad.
A lovely, tasty, comfortable place to dine with friends. A hidden gem in the middle of the busy college town. Reservation is encouraged. Always good specials, but this time they were out of the minestrone! How can an Italian restaurant be out of minestrone? Otherwise perfect.
We enjoyed a nice Friday dinner with family. Waitstaff was especially accommodating for elderly guest. Even though we were early (5:30), the homemade pasta was sold out. A small disappointment but otherwise it was a nice meal out.
I love this place. Am planning to have my birthday party lunch there.
It's my favorite in the area because they serve the best!!! gluten free pizza I've ever tasted.
The meatballs were great as was the rest of the food.. and the garlic balls are such a great added touch!
The food just keeps getting better here. Everyone I try a new dish I'm not disappointed. The prices are the best value in SLO and the younger crowd seems to be discovering that. It's also nice to have the same, consistant personal service each time we ear here.
Very good food and the ambiance was amazing. The only thing was my group ordered a bottle of wine and wanted to order the same type of wine but there was no more of it. Increase the stockage levels for wine.
Really nice late lunch. Great service. Food is delicious, and I only marked it at four stars instead of five as the garlic bread knots were a bit overdone on the bottom. I would have preferred a different bread for the meatball panini, but the taste was excellent.
Great. Didn’t have the wine we wanted in stock, but found a decent substitute.
Good food and service, but too noisy for good conversation. I would definitely go back, but perhaps midweek when it’s quieter.
Best place for Italian food and if you love Meatballs i would highly recommend them
Also the place has a wonderful atmosphere and the people are very friendly and nice
I would definitely recommend this place
Once again, Mama's was a good choice for a family dinner. While I can never order the signature Mama's meatballs because I eat gluten free and they have bread crumbs, this visit I tried the delicious gf penne and was not disappointed. The service is great -- the waiter kept the little bread knots bowl full to satisfy a restless toddler and everyone had a good time. Our table location, in the rear of the restaurant, was a little chilly due to the back door to the service area and restrooms being opened regularly. Otherwise everything was just great!
Took our college son and his roommates out for a Saturday night dinner. Great meal for party of 8! Attentive service, delicious food, fun atmosphere. Pasta, seafood, salads, and garlic knots appetizer were all amazing! Will definitely go back!
The restaurant was nice. The service was good. The only thing that was not good were the portions were small. We were 4, 2 adults and 2 teenagers. After dinner the teenagers were very hungry. Their meals were small portion same with mine. Overall great place to dine at.
We have been to Mama's Meatball about 4 times and had different dishes, all of which were excellent. This place never disappoints. Prices are good and food authentic. Love this place!!! Will be back for more.
