Mama Mia - 44sw
Blocks from the Theatre District, Mama Mia 44sw is considered the Best Family Owned Italian Restaurant in Hell's Kitchen. Whether your from the neighborhood, a tourist, or theatre-goer this is a hidden gem certain to delight you!
We are consistently rated 4 to 5-Stars across the board!!!
Well prepared Italian food, large portions, friendly vibe, moderate prices, convenient choice in theater district.
This is one of my 'go to' restaurants in the Theatre District- a block away on 9th Ave. it has less of the noisy crowd that tends to go to restaurant row. The food is fantastic - I always think Mama is cooking just for me. Remember good food takes time ! The staff do not hurry you from course to course but are accommodating if you tell them you have theatre tickets.
This is one of our favorite spots to eat in NYC. Even when we don’t have a reservation they try to accommodate. It’s like eating with family and the food is always hot on arrival and some of the most reliable and wonderful Italian meals around. All at a very affordable price!
My friend and I ordered the same entree but they were different colors. We had linguini with white clam sauce. Hers was white, mine was beige. We told the waitress who sent the manager over and we told/showed her. Since it tasted fine, she poo-poo'd it saying it must be more oil in mine. She even went into the kitchen to ask, and came out with the same response. It tasted fine, but I was somewhat nervous eating it, so I left most of it over. She never took that into account. I didn't want a freebie - but it would have been nice if she brought me a new dish. It wasn't a terrible thing, but I won't go back.
Very very loud! No AC that I could feel.
Food was great.
Service was very friendly, if a bit inattentive.
Very nice restaurant. We were a party of 7 and we were accommodated in the most professional way! There food was delicious and I will definitely be coming back again!
Good food, great service
Everything was delicious and our waiter was fantastic. A real gem, especially for pre-theater dining!
Cosy, family-run restaurant. Good food, good service had only 1 hour to have dinner before a play, and they were able to accommodate us.
Our table was ready right when wer arrived but we started with a drinnk at the bar. We were not rushed which we appreciated. When we sat down at our table our waiter was very attentive and our food was delivered wuickly without feeling rushed. Everythingw as very tasty and we thoroughly enjoyed our meals!
Reliable comfort food in a comfortable venue. It's been here in Hell's Kitchen for decades, and I hope it lasts for decades longer.
Atmosphere was friendly. We were able to sit outside which was important to us on a beautiful evening. We both had pasta and enjoyed them very much.
The best Calamari !
Delish chicken parm
And garlic bread finger licking good 😋
I have become a regular here! I love taking my friends and family when they visit me in my work area. I love that it's a family owned business for 48 years now, and the food is amazing! Best salmon entree I've ever had. Will be back again and again!
Good food but horrible service. Waitress was talking on her cell phone and not following up on our orders. By the end of our dinner she was having drinks with somebody else and not attending to us anymore. The bartender and others were great but she was bad. Left a rare 10% tip
We are regulars here and the food is always exceptional. There is a “but”. We can tell what our experience will be as soon as we know who our server is. There is a huge difference is service between servers. There is one taller gentleman with brown hair who is always stellar. Aside from him it is either incredibly inconsistent or actively bad. This past visits, sadly, was bad. The food as I mentioned is ALWAYS Stellar. If only the service were that consistent.
Terrible service. I made a 5pm reservation for a 7pm show. We ordered entrees at 5:15pm and nothing arrived until 5:59pm. I inquired twice and was told “five minutes.” This is a shame because this used to be great before the theatre.
First time in New York, mana Mia was close by one of the shows we attended. We arrived a bit early but was able to sit right away. Would love to go back when ever are in New York again.
We went to Mama Mia 44sw for brunch before a show. My friend had the salmon and vegetables and she said it was delicious. I had the brunch Started with the Mamosa’s very good and had an omelette with vegetables which was also delicious and the best potatoes. Next time I come there I plan to try to do dinner
Very sweet server and very attentive. Would be great for date night. Will definitely return
The food was delicious and service was excellent! Our only complaint was that we were blasted by air conditioning and fans where we were seated which made some of us uncomfortably cold.
Always excellent why I keep bringing friends back
The food, service, and drinks were fantastic. Seating very comfortable and the staff very accommodating to your needs. Even meet Mama Mia, classy lady, like her restaurant! They must be doing something right for being there 40+ years. Thanks for the great evening.
Brunch is a great deal here. Lots of entree options and beverages/muffins included. It’s never too crowded either. Great for last minute brunch or lunch.
The service was slow. We waited a lengthy time to order dessert and coffee and receive our check. Once we were done, the staff rushed us off to set the table for the next diners. Very poor professionalism.
always the best food! always
always theist service
Love going there every time I am in New York!!!
Dinner was good and the staff friendly. All the meals were flavorful.
We were pleasantly surprised not to be rushed on a Saturday night before theater time. We allowed plenty of time. I've been here before, but my friend from Chicago picked 44 SW based on the menu. It would have been nice if a small green salad had been included. The four of us split two salads. One side salad was fine for two people. We didn't have dessert, so I can't comment on that. The waitress was pleasant and attentive.
Reservations are suggested and when made, not honored. We waited for a table while she seated lots of walk-in parties ahead of us - lower your expectations and you’ll be fine.
Mama Mia was a wonderful surprise. We have passed by it a number of times and said we should go there someday. It was perfectly delightful, delicious and all with warm hospitality!
Nice family runner restaurant. Food came out steaming hot. Enjoyed the chicken and apple salad a lot.
Reliable Italian place near the Theater district. I've been here several times and never had a bad meal. The food is very good and the portions are generous. The location is ideal for those going to the theater. Seating can be tight - but that's the case in a lot of NYC restaurants. Would definitely recommend this place for good Italian eats!
We had a family reunion and everyone did a great job to accommodate us! One of our favorite places in NYC!!
We had dinner reservations at 8pm on Saturday (6/9). Quite possibly the worst service I have ever experienced on. Our waitress may have been new, young or inexperienced and possibly related to the owner. Otherwise she would not be able to work at another restaurant. Yes, it was that bad. Food was okay and the bar service was super slow. The waitress took our drink order, proceeded by food order. Then she never visited our table again. At one point we clearly needed another drink and I spied the waitress eating at another table within view. I looked over at her a couple of times, made eye contact but nothing. So, my daughter walked up to the bar, in clear view, and ordered her own drink and carried it back to the table. No reaction from the waitress. We were then serviced by no less than three other people at various times but no clear communication between any of them. I am usually a generous tipper but in this case, I decided to leave barely a 5% tip. Sorry Mama Mia. You will never see us again.
Pre theatre dining. We stated to wait staff and service was still slow. If they had come back in time after giving us the dessert menu, we would have ordered.
The service was okay, we ordered around 6:30 pm and our appetizers arrived by 6:40. Our entrees did not arrive until 7:30. That’s way too long for a NYC restaurant. On top of that my food was poorly seasoned. I would not return
A few things...the meatballs are amazing. Like. Seriously. The service was splendid. It is obvious that they care about their customers. Glad we checked it out.
This is a great place to eat. We have been here on two separate occasions. The food is outstanding. The prices are very reasonable. I would definitely go back. We went here before showing they were able to get us in an out super fast. Totally will go back.
