About Malo

Recently awarded best ‘Chips and Salsa’ in Ciudad magazine and as ‘one of the best places to taste tequila’ in Los Angeles by Sunset magazine. Malo is the Silver Lake home to over 150 different tequilas; all of them 100% blue agave; add our fresh sweet and sour made daily in house for a margarita or hit one of our fresh fruit puree margaritas made in house. Malo is a Los Angeles favorite for not only the margaritas and mojitos in the bar, but also the food.

“This hip but casual restaurant offers a new take on Mexican food by intertwining a gourmet aesthetic with home style favorites served with sturdy margaritas.”

The Ground Beef & Pickle tacos have been written up nationally as one of the best tacos in Los Angeles and the Burnt Habanero & Crema salsa is a local favorite. Fish tacos, Oaxacan shrimp and the Lobster Diablo are our current favorites from the sea and the Carne Asada and Pork Al Pastor rule the land.

I saw a couple of less than stellar reviews so I was guarded. I don't know what they were seeing. The service was great and the food really yummy. There were three of us, a carnivore, a vegetarian and a vegan. There was something for everyone. We all had tacos with a big salad. I will be going back.

This was my first visit since 2012 and the food was definitely not as good as I remember. The guacamole was fine but none of us enjoyed our entrees, especially for the pricepoint.

However, considering the ambience is nice and a Tecate Michelada is only $6, I'd definitely return for drinks.

The food was delicious! We started with the guacamole which was spicy and chunky. The chicken mole was authentic and shrimp diablos were spicy and tasty. Will definitely go back when I'm in that area.

Menu was a bit limited. patio very dark
Carnitas and steak were good. Shrimp flautas didn't seem to really have much shrimp. Nothing to rave about but ok
Rooster margarita was great! Just a 3/5 for overall.

I've been here several times before, but mostly for happy hour in the bar. This last time in the main room the service was slow - almost non-existent (it was 7 PM in a Sunday and the dining room was only 1/3 full). Waited several minutes for our drink order to be taken and then several more minutes for our server to appear. He showed up once more after were were practically done. We had to flag down a food runner to ask for our him. The food itself was "Meh". Beans were salty and rice tasted overcooked/stale. I expect more from this place. But maybe that's my fault.

Ordered one of the shrimp dishes and my wife did too, it was delicious and very satisfying. I will definitely come back to try the other dishes.

How this place is even still in business? i couldn't tell you.
For Sunday brunch - the restaurant looked like it hadn't been cleaned up properly from Saturday night. It was a mess!
Since we had an 11a reservation - the staff that greeted us were far from happy to see us.
the food was absolutely horrible! not one of the 6 of us, enjoyed the meal. the food that is described on the menu - is nothing of the actual plate you get.
I was totally embarrassed to have brought my group here.

I had a spicy diablo shrimp dish that was all fire and no taste. I felt that the dish was put together very haphazardly and not really much thought about taste but more about burning your gut. I love spicy but I also need flavour with my spice.

Service ruined the night. We had to chase the server around and literally had four different people help us. We had the wrong drinks brought to us and were late for concert because everything took so long. Food was fine. However, this place is too expensive for all the headaches that come with it. Pass.

Hipster Mexican restaurant to the max. Like: "I'd like my pumpkin enchiladas with a side of quinoa cilantro salad". Decent food, but feels like it's trying too hard to be cool. MUSTS: chewy chips (you have to ask for them special... do not just accept the regular chips!), and bacon beans.

This is my 3rd visit and I'm sad to say I wouldn't rush back in hurry. Our main dish was delicious. The chips to start were stale, and to be fair, I'm sure they would have replaced but we did not complain. I used to love the margaritas, but are now made with a mixer. Too sweet for my liking. Our server was sweet but didn't know what a Cava was or how to answer our query regarding it. Just overall disappointed with the last experience. I feel they have changed management/chef/bartender.

What a great find! The location is a little funky, and than you are wowed and surprised by the food and the ambiance. My 13 year old daughter said it was the best mexican food she had ever had (and we are Mexican!) We loved the Shrimp Quesofundido! Super great experience and food.

Delicious food, neighborly setting. Intriguing takes on Mexican standards without the pretentiousness (or prices) of places like Red O.

Food was solid. Service was almost non existent. We sat on the patio. Server showed up twice the whole night. Once to take our order and once to drop the check. I ordered more drinks through the bus boy. Amateur hour over here. Save your money and go to a legit Mexican restaurant.

"Meh" at best. Food was just ok. Cocktails were talked up but tasty enough. Service was excellent and with a smile. But seriously... if I'm paying $12 for cocktails and $16 for two small tacos, I expect the place to at least have toilet seats.
Could be worlds better with a few small changes but I won't be going back to find out.

Terrible service, and the food is OK. I'm. It sure who our server was, but we had three random people all at once. Then we had no server to attend to us and eventually had to just walk out to pay the bill. Then we went to the bar side of the restaurant and there was no bar tender? Eventually some one came over. Overall the service was just terrible.

Delicious Mexican food and a fun bar. The guacamole is delicious and has fresh pomegranite seeds on top...try it with the special "chewy chips" (they have these delicious slightly undercooked tortilla chips, you can get traditional ones as well). The beef and pickle taco is legendary, and they have great cocktails!

Came for lunch and we were the only ones there. Unfortunately the waiter didn't get my order correct and seeing as there wasn't anyone else in there it didn't bode well. I think they're going through some sort of ownership change. Hopefully it gets better because it used to be really good. Bummer
