“This hip but casual restaurant offers a new take on Mexican food by intertwining a gourmet aesthetic with home style favorites served with sturdy margaritas.”
The Ground Beef & Pickle tacos have been written up nationally as one of the best tacos in Los Angeles and the Burnt Habanero & Crema salsa is a local favorite. Malo Ratings and Reviews
The outdoor protected patio with heating lamps was the scenic option. And though people were there on the outdoor heated patio it was quiet and had a nice ambience and was romantic. The food was excellent and the service was absolutely outstanding. We were able to get parking in this crowded area in the medium size parking lot so that was nice.
During my stay in Southern California, I was craving Mexican food. My friend and I scoured the internet to find something decent or worthwhile to satisfy said desire. We came across Malo, which was easy to make a reservation for (on a Saturday night) and we were seated on the (heated) patio upon arrival. Admittedly, the place is expensive for what they provide. It's really nothing outstanding. I got a Skinny Margarita, their chips and (regular) salsa and the Blasted Half Chicken - which I highly recommend. My friend ordered the Shrimp Diablo, but within two bites, instantly regretted her decision. BEWARE: It's not a plate for the faint of heart! Overall, I'll be eating elsewhere the next time I'm in the area.
I saw a couple of less than stellar reviews so I was guarded. I don't know what they were seeing. The service was great and the food really yummy. There were three of us, a carnivore, a vegetarian and a vegan. There was something for everyone. We all had tacos with a big salad. I will be going back.
This was my first visit since 2012 and the food was definitely not as good as I remember. The guacamole was fine but none of us enjoyed our entrees, especially for the pricepoint.
However, considering the ambience is nice and a Tecate Michelada is only $6, I'd definitely return for drinks.
I've been here several times before, but mostly for happy hour in the bar. This last time in the main room the service was slow - almost non-existent (it was 7 PM in a Sunday and the dining room was only 1/3 full). Waited several minutes for our drink order to be taken and then several more minutes for our server to appear. He showed up once more after were were practically done. We had to flag down a food runner to ask for our him. The food itself was "Meh". Beans were salty and rice tasted overcooked/stale. I expect more from this place. But maybe that's my fault.
How this place is even still in business? i couldn't tell you.
For Sunday brunch - the restaurant looked like it hadn't been cleaned up properly from Saturday night. It was a mess!
Since we had an 11a reservation - the staff that greeted us were far from happy to see us.
the food was absolutely horrible! not one of the 6 of us, enjoyed the meal. the food that is described on the menu - is nothing of the actual plate you get.
I was totally embarrassed to have brought my group here.
Service ruined the night. We had to chase the server around and literally had four different people help us. We had the wrong drinks brought to us and were late for concert because everything took so long. Food was fine. However, this place is too expensive for all the headaches that come with it. Pass.
Hipster Mexican restaurant to the max. Like: "I'd like my pumpkin enchiladas with a side of quinoa cilantro salad". Decent food, but feels like it's trying too hard to be cool. MUSTS: chewy chips (you have to ask for them special... do not just accept the regular chips!), and bacon beans.
This is my 3rd visit and I'm sad to say I wouldn't rush back in hurry. Our main dish was delicious. The chips to start were stale, and to be fair, I'm sure they would have replaced but we did not complain. I used to love the margaritas, but are now made with a mixer. Too sweet for my liking. Our server was sweet but didn't know what a Cava was or how to answer our query regarding it. Just overall disappointed with the last experience. I feel they have changed management/chef/bartender.
What a great find! The location is a little funky, and than you are wowed and surprised by the food and the ambiance. My 13 year old daughter said it was the best mexican food she had ever had (and we are Mexican!) We loved the Shrimp Quesofundido! Super great experience and food.
Food was solid. Service was almost non existent. We sat on the patio. Server showed up twice the whole night. Once to take our order and once to drop the check. I ordered more drinks through the bus boy. Amateur hour over here. Save your money and go to a legit Mexican restaurant.
