Malbec - Toluca Lake Ratings and Reviews
Bad service. My steak was cooked incorrectly twice and the restaurant didn’t make an attempt to “make it right.” It was extremely loud; it was clear the staff wanted to leave (even though the restaurant was still open) and were banging dishes loudly - perhaps they were in a hurry? Temperature was cold as they left a door open near our table. When I asked why it was so cold and If it could be adjusted, the waitress said they needed it cool because they were hot from being busy and moving around a lot. Overall, bad experience. Wouldn’t recommend to anyone.
Our meal was excellent and the service however was a little slow over two hours from our reservation time until we left our waitress was very friendly and knowledgeable of the menu however it seem to take too long to get our main course. It was still worth it
Originally from New York and so used to night outs in Manhattan, our Malbec experience in Toluca Lake was very pleasant.
Malbec has a suburban feel but seeing the nice crowd and listening to the lively piped-in music, it had a nice club lounge atmosphere. This was our first time at Malbec. It seemed dark when we walked in and looked small, but as it turned out, they have 4 small dining sections and a buzzling bar. The hostess took us all the way to the back what looked like a sunroom adorned with plants and string livhts—very cozy and romantic. It was quieter and lovelier. The music was hip and loud enough to give that modern bar feeling, but not too loud that we were still able to talk with our normal voices.
They have a wide selection of wine and variety of food. We had the calamari for appetizers which was cooked to perfection, nothing greasy and very fresh. For the entree we had the salmon and the seafood paella. DELICIOUSLY FRESH AND FLAVORFUL, perfect sized portions, nicely served steaming hot. The food had just enough salt to taste (my husband and I are low-salt eaters), so it was really perfect for us. For dessert, we had the Argentinian flan—the caramel and nutella-like sauce were very sweet but the flan itself was not. It was just right and the texture was very light like a jello! Desserts came with free glass of rosé.
Our servers were very pleasant and attentive. Even though the place was packed and busy, we were not rushed to finish our meals. It was a very relaxing evening with great food and service—a perfect combination. I highly recommend Malbec for romantic night outs or with group of friends, birthdays, and special occasions. Happy to give them 5 stars!
This was lunch for two on a Wednesday. Not crowded so it was conducive to conversation. I've been there on a Thursday night when it's packed and very loud. In either case, the food is terrific. For lunch, I had a salmon salad (VERY generous portions of salmon so I had leftovers the next day) which was very light and tasty. Dressing was perfect - just the right amount - I usually don't trust a restaurant to put it on for me.
Massive improvements since last year. A+
My husband and I attempted to go here for dineLA in 2017 and it was such a mess. The hostess was got into a fight with one of servers, they screamed at each other regarding the lack of staff and how overwhelmed the waitress / staff were feeling right at the host stand. It so off putting we cancelled our reservation and didn’t return until several months later. Our first actual visit was pleasant. The restaurant emptier. We were seated and served right away and the food was great.
So we tried DineLA 2018 going in with some genuine fear... In comparison to other restaurants that serve you a hamburger for $39, you actually get STEAK! Their menu was unique and hence we wanted to go back. And we were super happy we did. They were fully staffed with friendly servers. We got the dineLA menu which had salmon tartar, a burata, and panhandle cotta dessert. The noise level was a bit high since the place is rather small, but besides that— we will be looking forward to our next visit
This is our 5th New Years Eve at Malbec -- food and service always great. We've eaten at Malbec other times as well, and can say that the special NYE menu is just as high quality as on any other night. Service is attentive and we never felt rushed the entire evening.
I was impressed with their having a vegetarian option that looked (on the menu) to be very well thought out. Although a meat/fish eater, I intend to try that if I see it on the menu again. Many places today put "something vegetarian" on, but off just some kind of salad-based dish. Malbec's offering appeared to have a lot of thought put into it.
They don't have the world's largest wine list, but what they do have keys well with the menu. You should be able to find something to your taste unless you're looking for extremely inexpensive wine.
The dining room is modestly noisy but I had no difficulty hearing my companion despite having hearing loss. She had no difficulty hearing me even though I speak very softly. The front dining room could be very romantic if you went on a slower night. The atmosphere overall is pleasant, with dim lighting and good choice of decor.
This was the best New Year's Eve dining experience I've had in years. It was a pared down menu, but not prix--fixe, which I appreciated. Even though the full menu wasn't available, there were still multiple choices and the prices didn't seem jacked up for the holiday. There's a phenomenon my husband and I have experienced while dining out...when we don't order alcohol with our meal, the service is very lacking...but not here. We decided not to drink, so we were slightly worried, however, the service here was pretty impeccable. From our server to the bussers, they were on top of everything. The food came out quickly, and completely to our liking. We went for an early dinner at 6pm and were done in an hour. Definitely one of the better experiences we've had dining in LA in general. We are looking forward to trying dinner from the full menu soon!
Wanted place for steak at request of son visiting from out of state and also daughter visiting as well. Only complaint is a little too much charring of NY steak on the outside, although inside meat was cooked to order at medium rare. Beet salad was excellent as were the Brussel sprouts. Polenta and chard both cooked with good flavor and texture which accompanied nicely prepared lamb shank. Pasta satisfied daughter's craving with tasty sauce. More than enough for the four of us as we had a meal to take home as left overs.
It was my s cond time here as I don’t live in this area to come more often. Service is great, lovely smiley waitress who makes you feel welcome and special!
Food was really good too, I had chimichuri steak and Argentinian wine.
The ambiance is humble and quiet. I enjoyed my dinner and will go back again
Its is EXACTLY what it says:"Argentina is world famous for its cuisine. From homemade salads, pastas and fish to an abundant selection of our signature grilled meats, Malbec Argentinean Cuisine brings you the best authentic cuisine prepared on our genuine Argentinean grill."
Lunched with friends at Malbec in Toluca Lake and, as always, the food and service were excellent! Started with a spinach and cheese empanada as an appetizer which was delicious. The crust was much better and tastier than that of traditional empanadas. We all ordered the chimichurri steak and found the meat as tender as a quality filet mignon. Ordered different desserts, but all of us had the same “ahs” of pure enjoyment. Highly recommend this restaurant. You won’t be disappointed.
