Maize Restaurant of Newark Ratings and Reviews
Such a pleasant surprise to have dinner here before a NJPAC event. A festive atmosphere, and a reservation gaffe ( open table vs restaurant computer) led us to two seats at the bar. We were served by the Owners. A simply delicious sirloin burger ( actually two of them) and a piece of delicious lime cake shared was a perfect meal.
Highly recommend. And sit at the bar.
I eat out often and I had the rudest and most ignorant behavior ever from this restaurant. What a mess. If the owner is interested he can call me and I would be glad to go in more detail. To say the least we didn't stay. Sorry, but my experience was the very definition of bad customer service.
Service was horrible. Non attentive. Had to finish in time for a show at the performing arts center and they couldn’t get the food out fast enough. An hour and a half should be enough time for them to complete the meal and they failed. We asked two times to see a manager and none existed. Duck came out raw. Never coming back here.
We decided to give this place a try even though many reviews were not complimentary... the food was EXCELLENT!!! However, the customer service is something that needs serious help. The waiter was less attentive than the bussers (in another review) but we had no issues until I received an email from Open Table later last night that the restaurant listed us as a no show reservation. I did advise OT that we did indeed keep the reservation and they apparently sorted that out. But here's the proof that customer service is lacking; we were seated as only the third occupied table at 6:00 PM so how difficult is it to check in a reservation properly???
I don't think I've ever written a bad reviw. But I'd have a hard time remembering a worse restaurant experience than this. We waited over an hour and never received our meal. We walked out in that we had an event to get to at NJPAC. We were one of three parties who left the restaurant without receiving their meals. The waiter was rude and unhelpful. The food, from what we could see, looked bland and uninteresting. If you're trying to grab a quick meal before seeing an event at NJPAC, you'd be far better off grabbing a slice of pizza around the corner. Never visit this restaurant.
We arrived a few minutes early for our reservation. We were going to a show and didn't want to be pressed for time.
We were seated immediately and the busboys brought bread and water within 2 minutes.
But even though I asked the busboys for help twice, it took 20 minutes for a waiter to appear. We watched people who had come after us get served but they ignored us.
After they took our order, it took another 20 minutes for the drinks to arrive.
Then another 10 minutes for the starter to arrive.
We ended up having to gulp our dessert and we missed out on coffee, since we had to leave to make our show.
Others were better served, so your mileage may vary.
The food was tasty, but my wife's fish was a little dry - no doubt from waiting for an eternity on the warmer before they bothered to bring it to us.
Very convenient to NJPAC. Went to this restaurant before a show there - service was so painfully slow that we had skip the last course in a 3 course pre-theater menu. Had to ask to see a menu multiple times, had to ask for our food multiple times, had to ask for the check multiple times, eventually asked to see the manager multiple times. To top it off, food was only adequate, and certainly not worth the price or the aggravation.
I was somewhat apprehensive about making a reservation based on some of the recent reviewers on Yelp and Open Table. We reviewed the menu and my party of 3 agreed to go. We walked in and we were immediately seated. When I opened the menu it was a pre-fix menu and I was surprised. When I asked about it I was told that because of the events in town it is easier for them to have a pre-fix menu. Honestly - we adjusted quite well. The food was very good - garlic shrimp, New York strip, duck entrees! It was clean and the staff were most friendly. Definitely would come back....Happy we agreed to go. It was perfect walking distance to the Rock.
We went to Maize before an event at NJPAC at recommendation of a friend. Unfortunately, it did NOT live up to expectations. The food was mediocre at best considering the $45 pre-fixe. My tuna was cold and tasted very fishy (waiter didn't seem to notice that i left most of it on my plate). My wife had the duck and was suppose to get the breast and leg but only got the breast.
The desserts tasted store bought
Don't think we will be going back
I am never one to write negative reviews, but my experience warrants me to do so. We made reservations on Open Table for a romantic evening. I called to confirm and to ask for a quiet romantic table and got a VERY NASTY lady on the phone. When we arrived for dinner there was no one there to greet us or even seat us and after driving 45 mins to an hour we walk into a private party( with dj and casino tables that took up 75% -80% of the resturant. The same nasty lady was there and could care less that we were there and we expressed our disappointment that at no time did they tell us of this party and it wouldn't be a Quiet romantic evening as i expressed earlier on the phone. So disappointed we left and went to another resturant. I found out later the NASTY LADY is the owners wife. POOR management, Poor customer service and for an owner she should be ashamed of herself . I would NEVER go back to that resturant again and I will make sure to advise my friends and family to stay clear of this resturant. Maybe they need a refresher course in hospitality.
We came here for dinner prior to seeing a concert at NJPAC. Good choice for pre-show dining. Located across the street from NJPAC in a hotel. We parked at NJPAC and walked across the street to have dinner. Food was good - a little overpriced - however, we enjoyed our meal and drinks. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for good, convenient, pre-show dining. Service and atmosphere was pleasant - be sure to make a reservation - we made a 5:00pm reservation for a 7:30pm show and the timing worked out great - no rushing. By 6:00pm the restaurant was packed so be careful with your timing. Would go again prior to a show.
A group of friends ate dinner here before attending a show at NJPAC. Parking at the hotel/restaurant lot was problematic, possibly due to adjacent construction. The parking attendants at the hotel lot did not speak English very well and it was difficult to understand any info they could provide. One of the hosts at the restaurant also was not helpful in offering info about parking options. We were able to obtain parking in the underground garage but it costs $28.
The ambiance is upscale and overall the food was good but service was quite slow. Also, no wait staff came by to refill water glasses and did not return after serving the entrees to make sure all was okay. One of the beef entrees was not as ordered and it took time to get a waiter's attention. The stuffed tilapia serving was also quite small. Oddly, the shrimp sautéed in garlic sauce was served with rice and potato chips - but no vegetable.
It's convenient if attending a show at NJPAC but otherwise I wouldn't rush back.
I chose this restaurant because it was close to the NJPAC theater and we had a show to see. There seemed to be only one waiter working the entire restaurant so it took a while for the waiter to get to us and take our order. I ordered the Mariscada with green sauce however my dish came with the red sauce. The meal was served by one of the bussers. Since we were in a rush to catch our show I just ate the meal as is. When the waiter finally came back to check on us and I told him about the mistake he acted very unapologetic and blamed the cooks. He told me he entered the dish in correctly but the kitchen messed up. He did not apologize for the mistake or try to do anything to make up for it. Fortunately the bussers provided excellent service to make up for the waiter.
We dined at Maize before a performance at NJPAC and were pleasantly surprised. The ambiance was charming and comfortable and the staff was very attentive without being overbearing. Our dishes were all quite good and everyone was satisfied with their choices. The Spanish muscles were spicy and tasty, the linguine with white clam sauce done very nicely. Dessert lived up to expectations and we were out in time to make our show. It's always good to have an early reservation so you can dine without worrying about finishing to close to show time.
I wasn't sure what to expect - the reviews were mixed so we gave it a shot and it was just perfect!
Our waiter sat us down and got our drinks just as soon as we were ready.
Very polite and attentive too.
Our food was just delicious, my husband got surf and turf and I got the Chateaubriand which was excellent!!
I would and will be back!
Food was delicious. It takes about 25-30 mins to get your meal, so if going to a show, factor that in. Nice ambiance, quiet. Waiters are professional and attentive.
To find this, just go in the main entrance of the Robert Treat hotel and it is about 50 feet down the hall on the right.
This is a great place to go for a nice meal before a show at the Prudential center which is only a 10 minute walk away. Nice atmosphere, really good food, and reasonable prices. They were also aware of people going to a show and served efficiently. We were seated right on time with our reservation, and our order taken quickly. Allow about 90 minutes for a drink, appetizer, and meal.....plenty of time to get to a show.
We went to Maize prior to attending a concert on 9/7/17. Service was terrible, it took 10 minutes for them to take a drink order and another 10 minutes for them to deliver a beer. We had multiple waiters working our table which may sound good but when one of the waiters knocked a full beer into my friend's lap, other than extra napkins to mop it up, they offered no compensation for my friend who would be spending the night in beer soaked clothes smelling like he drank way more than he actually did.
The worst part was the waiter who did it kept it a secret from the main waiter at the table, when the bill arrived, no consideration was given for the mishap, when I questioned the waiter he knew nothing of the incident, apologized and went to talk to the manager. He returned with the bill, they took ONE BEER off the bill. They should have given him his meal for free, or all the beers for free or something. We expected some type of consideration, we got none. The waiter blamed it on the manager (who would have come to the table if he cared at all!) and said the one beer was all he would take off.
I explained to him that his manger was costing HIM money and proceeded to leave the most embarrassing small tip I have ever left, but these folks deserved it. They could have handled the situation much better.
I would recommend taking a pass on this place, if you are attending a show or a game plan early there are plenty of other places nearby that would appreciate your business more than this place, probably the reason it was one of the only places available on short notice.
Oh yeah btw, the food was average, if you want the real Portuguese food, head on down the street where there are plenty of better options.
The prices were a bit steep, but the amount of food provided for appetizers and entrée was enough to make the prices worth it. Food was served pretty quickly and was nice and hot. I had enough of my entrée to eat an entire meal the next day.
Would definitely eat here again but for a special occasion like Mother's Day or my Mom's birthday.
Maize is in the Robert Treat hotel right across from NJPAC which made it the perfect location for dinner before the show. Parking located at the hotel or across the street. Drinks were good and reasonably priced. We had the fried calamari and shrimp cocktail for starters. Bread was very good too. For entrees, we had stuffed shrimp, crab legs, garlic shrimp and my choice was the seafood combo in Green sauce. It was so much that I couldn't finish it. My friends said that the shrimp was overcooked but my combo (lobster, shrimp, scallops, clams and mussels) was great. We topped everything off with NY-style Cheesecake and ice cream on the side. Friends complained about the single bathrooms with low ceilings but overall a very enjoyable, convenient experience...I will come back before my next NJPAC event.
The place was empty besides 1 large table that was very loud & a party in the back room with a DJ that was also very loud. We were told that it was a prom party in the rear, but we didn't expect that. The margarita I ordered tasted like sour mix with no liquor. I didn't bother to complain because I just wanted to finish our order and get out of there as quickly as possible.
I would like to start off by saying their online menu attracted me to the restaurant. Being a first-time patron, when we got to the restaurant on a Saturday night, they indicated that they only had a pre-theater menu, because apparently NJPAC is across the street, and this is what they do when there are shows. Except I wasn't there for the show and nor was it indicated on Their website or OpenTable. I explain to the waiter that we were not there for pre-theater, and I would like the regular menu, and he got immediately agitated and defensive. I asked to speak to a manager, who turns out to be either the child or relative of the owner, and with that, he thought he had the right to speak down to me. And he indicated that it was listed on the website and open table, so I showed him on the OpenTable app and his website it wasn't indicated, neither the nasty waiter, the arrogant manager and now the owner were denying my simple request for the regular menu. Expressing that the kitchen wasn't prepared for that for another two hours. I found that completely unacceptable and spoke to the owner in private, and he accommodated us with no problem. Quite the professional gentleman. The food was pretty good, nothing stellar. Pretty interior. But I'm glad I went anyway.
Very nice place, but we viewed the menu and website online and no where did they mention that prior to a performance at NJPAC their menu was a limited price fix. The food was good, but we should have been alerted to the fact that the normal dinner menu would not be available the night of a performance.
