Mahony & Sons - UBC Ratings and Reviews
We chose this restaurant because of its location at UBC. Although the restaurant was not busy, we were told there would be a forty-five minute wait for food. My soup was extremely salty and I did not finish it. The server did not bring us the bill in a timely manner and so I had to go find her to request the bill. The food was overpriced. The restaurant itself is pleasant and in a great location. I don't understand why more effort isn't put in to correct the basic quality of the food and service.
Nice lunch but surprised by how much food they were out of given
it is one of the few campus restaurants that remained open over the holidays. They had no beef burgers and no salmon. They holiday menu on offer was already quite small and without burgers there were even fewer choices.
Went on a busy night, had a reservation and we were late but called ahead and they honoured it wich was great, although they sat us right at the opening to a side entrance door which people kept opening on us. Server was overwhelmed and forgetful. The kitchen was sold out of 3 menu items we wanted and it was before 7pm.
It would be understandable of the server had multiple tables to attend to however this was not the case. I had asked for ketchup at least 3 times and on each occasion the server had asked if there was anything she could bring; for some reason or another, each time she had forgotten my condiment request. About the fourth time is when someone else brought me the condiments. Perhaps next time I should have went to the bar and/or the kitchen to ask for the condiment directly. Same thing was experienced when I asked for the bill. I think it will be some time before I revisit this place again.
This was a perfect place for a work lunch. Lots of space and delicious food. They have some of the best sweet potato fries I've ever had and the Guinness gravy is fantastic. My only criticism is that it is a bit on the expensive side for a pub located on a university campus.
It was a pub lunch, but not worth the $20 dine out charge. Better to order off the main menu.
Food was adequate but not even warm...place was noisy and dark.
The servers did an amazing job...only two of them, and a team of 30 kids came in for lunch...
I should have known better...a pub.
Upon arrival, hostess never told us they only had the late menu which was mainly just appetizers. She still gave us the regular menu. I was pretty disappointed as I was hoping to have an entree meal, if I had know this I would've had a drink and left but at that moment I had already ordered appys and drinks. It was not until I decided what entree I wanted that she said she was sorry and forgot to tell us ...
We had fish & chips and bangers & mash. The fish piece was a little small. If you have an appetite get two pieces. Bangers and mash were great and the vegetables were outstanding. Our waitress was very nice but she was run off her feet. She could have used some help.
There's no sense going into it. I don't have the energy to write a comedic drama. They missed at every turn - beginning to end.
If you go here, be prepared for the possibility that you will get inexperienced, untrained staff in the front and the back of the house.
There's only one thing for it in these cases...
Kudos to the kitchen and wait staff. Food was fabulous and service was impeccable! Requested a quiet table location for a business meeting and was provided seating in an alcove that was perfect. Every aspect of the dining experience at Mahony's greatly exceeded my expectations.
Well, it's an Irish pub, right? So I suppose I should have expected what I got. Great Irish ales and local microbrews on tap, but poor food. The bread surrounding the chicken and brie sandwich overwhelmed the interior, leaving the sandwich tasteless. The chicken had been overkilled as well. On the other hand, one food standout - the chicken wings. While not large, they were spicy and cooked properly, and not breaded, prepared the way they ought to have been. The service was excellent and friendly, which along with the beers, made up for the poor sandwich.
We booked this for 4 for Dine Out Vancouver. We were given a table for 4 that was in a little nook that was excellent for noise and privacy - though other tables would likely have been fine, too. Food was delicious and to everyone's taste. Furnishings and surroundings are much better than average. Validated parking for beneath the building, too. Enjoyable all round.
For the price of the dine out menu ($18) the food was amazing, we were a group of 4 and we all enjoyed our meals. I dont normally get 3 courses because I cant afford too so to get 3 courses for that price is brilliant! And they weren't tiny little portions like in the posh restaurants they were nice sizes and the apple pie for dessert was mouth watering! The waitresses were very pleasant and there were a few other groups around having drinks, its a laid back ambiance a good place for groups of friends.
Server greeted us and took us right to the seat, it was a group of 7 people. We were happy until we placed our order then the service went down hill, the servers left us for over 20 minutes, we had to go to the bar and even then it took them 4 minutes to come over, if busy I would understand but there was 3 girls just talking and not paying attention to anyone, there was 2 tables on the lower section that had hands up also trying to get some service. When the food came (I had a curry) there was browned parsley on top of the rice - they didn't seem to care that I hadn't touched it and although I'm sure it was ok to eat the fact someone would garnish something with that put me off. No one at my table would go back. Koerner's pub it is!
