Outstanding breakfast- super tasty burritos and adobo fried rice. Great, upbeat service that makes you want to come back. Definitely a gem.
Not the most climate controlled experience. Tables were by the pool and was, therefore, VERY humid and hot and uncomfortable. Considered leaving at first. Stuck it out and glad we did.
Got the grilled pork chop special. Very tasty-flavorful and moist. My wife got the pasta dish and was equally satisfied.
Only other complaint was more of a head shaker than anything else... and think it may be more of an APP issue. We put down that the dinner was in celebration of our 30th anniversary and there was no recognition of it at all. Didn’t expect banners and streamers, but SOMETHING would have been nice. Oh well. Gave them the benefit of the doubt that they didn’t get word from the reservation
25th anniversary celebration felt like family and home you have to go
Mahina and Sons is surfer-cool decorated in an equally surfer-cool hotel in Waikiki. The server we had, Karen, was so nice, attentive, and just adorable. We order the Family Style meal with the whole fried snapper (delicious!! Get it fried, not steamed) for $90, and two of the family style side portions for $37/person. We split it between 3. The snapper was fantastic! Crispy, salty skin, and moist meat, and the presentation was great. I’m still craving it. The $37+ for the appetizers and sides were a huge disappointment. We were not served $80 worth of rice, potatoes, and carrots, and they weren’t good enough for that price anyway.
The snapper was definitely worth coming for, and the service was great. I’d recommend the fish and ordered your own sides individually if you come. Or taking the snapper to go and eat it at home with your own sides.
always outstanding service with aloha from Maryann.
We're pretty particular (a.k.a picky) about dining out when we travel: if you spend serious money to visit paradise, you want the peripheral experiences to measure up. WOW, did that happen for us at Mahina and Sun's. The online reviews and local press write-ups were compelling and intriguing, so we booked an inside table for our anniversary dinner. There are no words for the scale of "fun brilliance" of the staff: they got every service note EXACTLY right. As far as the food: we opted for a chef's tasting/wine pairing menu (DO THIS if it's available!) and for a featured entree (DO THIS also, if it's the locally-sourced pork chop). We may have ended up ordering a little more food than we could manage, but it was REALLY delicious. Every bite was interesting and perfectly paired with each accompanying wine selection. And (to repeat) all of it was elevated by a staff that anticipated our wants and needs and made us feel like beloved regulars. Mahalo!
Wonders food and great service
Hip casual eating and drinking destination. Good opportunity to taste local ingredients while enjoying delicious good and beverages.
The staff was extremely friendly and welcoming, just adding the perfect touch to the amazing opah and shrimp/watercress salad. I could not have picked a better for my birthday celebration and they gifted the most delicious desert for my birthday! Mahalo!
Did not have the best experience here. Service was not great, the food accommodations for someone with a gluten/dairy allergy were subpar. Would not recommend.
We are big fans of Ed Kennedy but we were disappointed by the food. Salad was over salted and Opah was dry and salty. Food was way overpriced. Excellent service and great drinks though.
Good food. Quantities are large so definitely bring your appetite
Loved the sixties laid back, by the pool vibe. With great food to boot.
Great food and music
Great place for a casual vibe but interesting and well executed dishes.
Another excellent to outstanding visit, with kind and efficient service and the food is just so creative and satisfying. I keep coming back!
Great place. The food is awesome and it is open air so it is very relaxing time. The service is excellent as well. Wish I had room for desert.
If you’re a first timer, definitely go for the prix fixe dinner menu - and yes, always choose the wine pairing!
Did tasting menu and food was outstanding with a lot of locally-sourced ingredients. Nice atmosphere as well.
I love the vibe at the Surf Jack. The food was good. The service was good, but not inspiring.
The food was delicious (onolicious). Better than I expected. Staff was warm and friendly. Even the valet. They made us feel like we were long time friends. Would go back.
Great service! Nice ambiance. They were short on a couple of menu items but what I did have was soooo good!
Casual and relaxed by the pool. Happy hour menu made it affordable but service wasn't great.
A fabulous venue with funky decor that flows effortlessly out to the pool area. Food was fine, but go for the ambiance.
Great place by their pool. Island music and excellent cocktails.
Such a unique restaurant! The staff goes out of their way to make you comfortable & happy. My husband fell coming up the stairs as we walked in, got a cut on his arm & a bruised knee. They could not have been more helpful & apologetic. He was fine just a bit shaken up. They had band aids, ointment & ice to him immediately. They also check on him a few times throughout the evening.
The menu was small but I love it that way because it forces me to try new things. Everything was amazing! A true Hawaiian food experience with all the local fish, fruits & vegetables. We were not disappointed with any of our choices from appetizers to desserts. We had Australian friends with us who were delighted to see pavlova on the menu. It was simply amazing!!!
Food is very good, innovative, and locally sourced. Service is very good. Tables are a bit close together. Not an issue if you're a big group, but may be if you're on a date.
It was okay. Food was a bit salty and pricy for my taste.
The meal and ambiance were really fun. For a hotel restaurant, it was really different - mostly open air, with. Great vibe with local live music. Good and service was excellent. Only unusual twist was that the bar did not have a blender, so many traditional blended drinks (if you ordered one) were shake . Great place - would certainly go again!
Loved it. Everything was great. The music too was great. Love to know who they were.
When we arrived we had to wait for them to confirm our reservation, couldn't find their booking. Once they found it we were seated immediately but waiter at 15 mins b4 our waitress came and asked if we wanted something to drink and we decided no menu. I had to go to another table, where no one was seating, to grab the menu. It seemed a little confusion in the restaurant like they we not prepared to open and having the "Big Chill" there also seemed it was short staffed - only 1 waitress, which the service was friendly. We got only part of our order & had to ask for our mochi waffle, which was delicious. All of our dirty plates & silverware was taken away as soon as we were done eating and ask if we wanted our check. On my reservation i had mentioned staying for the Big Chill event (11 to 3 pm). We didn't even get an ice tea refill! We even got up to dance & returned to find out our water glasses we taken away which lead to a cleared table. It made me feel let they wanted us to leave - so we did, this was 1:30 pm.
Great quiet breakfast getaway by Ed Kenney. Nice small menu with something for everyone. No headache in choices to make. Well priced and that extra Kama'aina club card is a nice touch with free valet.
Naturally taste food and good services!
I will go there next time.
We loved our dining experience at Mahina and Sun's at the Surfjack hotel. What an uber cool place to dine. The food was outstanding and the service so warm and friendly - loved it!
Best fish dish
What a gem! The staff was patient and knowledgeable. AND the best part— the food was wonderful
Always enjoy our time at Surfjack & Mahina and Sun’s dining. Today we came to treat my dad for father’s day lunch. Had the Special skillet meal and dark chocolate butter mochi waffle with black sesame gelato! Meal was perfectly cooked and seasoned.
Highly recommend for brunch and nice day out in Waikiki. Will need to come for dinner next time!
Service was dreadful. Disorganised and without knowledge about the food and wine they were serving - or at all. Given the expense of the meal, and the restaurant’s reputation, it was woeful.
What a hidden gem of a place! Decor is so hip yet casual and comfortable. The service (Maryann?) was incredible and we went with all of her recommendations including starting off with an incredible crafted cocktail of gin, lilikoi and cardamom tea then the tasting menu. It was a wonderful way to sample the beat of the restaurants offerings.
