Mago Grill & Cantina - South Barrington Ratings and Reviews
Service for the most part was fine. Appearance of the restaurant was nice.
In respect to food, I had ordered several types of tacos. The meat for the carne asada (steak) tacos were on the cold side temperature wise. I was not impressed with the shrimp taco as the shrimp resembled that of cocktail shrimp again on the cold side temperature wise.
Although we had a reservation, we still had about a 10 minute wait, which would have been okay, except that there really isn't an area to wait in. Other than that, once we were seated, we had good service, and the food was very good. Over all, it was a good experience and I would dine here again.
Went here on New Year’s eve. As expected the place was extremely busy, however as we had a reservation we were seated immediately. Food was delicious, I went with the waitress recommendation of the lamb chops. They did not disappoint. Our waitress was very friendly and professional, sorry I have forgotten her name.
The manager, Sergio is just wonderful, welcoming and constantly checking front of house to make sure that all is working like a well oiled machine!!
Don’t hesitate to try this restaurant.
We had a great meal at Mago. We were a little early for our reservation, but had enough time to order drinks at the bar and still be seated early. All six adults enjoyed their meals. Most of us were happily pushed out of our comfort zone because our waiter brought out samples of the different miles for us to try. The drinks were very good as well. Overall, this was a wonderful experience, and we will definitely be back.
Two of us had dinner there. I discovered my one of my brand-new earrings fell off just as we were sitting down. Right when I was looking for it, one of the managers came over, very concerned. He helped me by using his cell phone flashlight. I went to the Ladies Room, hoping I could find it...and I did! He was still looking when I returned to the table & very happy when I told him I found it. I really appreciated his efforts.
The service was very good, our waiter came several times to help with questions we had. We had tableside guacamole, which was very good...nice that you can order it with how spicy you want it.
My friend had fajitas, said they were very good. I had the Burrito, but decided to have it gluten free, just to avoid all those carbs. It was very good...had the Carne Asade Steak version.
We each had Sangria, my friend the Pomegranate and I the Mango Passion Fruit version. We were too full for dessert.
We had a pleasant time. We have both been there before, and will go again.
This was our second visit in 10 days and we were very disappointed compared to our first visit. The mole we chose tasted completely different with no explanation. My wife's plate also came with the wrong sides from what the menu said and it had to go back. Our first visit was terrific but after the second and no consistency we're not sure we'll go back, too bad.
Delicious Mexican food most notable for their constantly changing Mole specials as well as their adoringly made Mole standards.
Guacamole is made by hand at your table to order and is quite delicious.
We've never had a bad meal and typically everything is excellent.
Service is good, but can get a little behind. Staff are very nice.
Reservations are a good idea for peek times.
Mago is becoming a post-Christmas tradition with extended family gathering for lunch. The guacamole made table-side is fantastic. I LOVE the delicious tacos hongas, and the fact that they have so many vegetarian options. My niece and nephew raved about the margaritas, and two nieces loved their steak tacos. The staff was expert, attentive and accommodating. This is always a fun and delicious experience.
There are so many good, authentic, reasonably-priced Mexican restaurants in the area, who needs an overpriced, phony, showy, place with mediocre food (except for the excellent table-made guacamole)?
I have never found a chain Mexican restaurant that I really like. And there are times and places where a chain Mexican restaurant is a good, safe choice (like in areas where there are no good family run Mexican restaurants, for example). But in this area, there are many good choices where the meal is not a show, and where the food is the central focus, and where it is fresh, not processed, and where there is real taste in the food, and love in the preparation.
Mago Grill is a smaller, local chain. Not like Uncle Julio's, which is larger. And its trying to be an upscale Mexican restaurant, but not like great restaurants, like Frontera Grill in Chicago. Its aiming for "Mexican for people who don't like spices", or something like that.
I can't say that the meal was bad. And the guacamole was excellent. The service was good (they were not on top of keeping my ice tea glass full), but otherwise, it was good. I thought the chicken in my fajitas was close to frozen or processed chicken, certainly not recently cut up chicken breasts. But the flavoring was ok, the peppers were very good, and the overall taste was ok, but not memorable. The serving was generous, but there were not enough tortillas to eat with the meat and vegetables.
So, overall, it wasn't that it was a bad meal, it just was an expensive Mexican meal that was more of a show than a feast, and it was much too upscale showy for me.
I’m not a big eater, so it is unusual for me to still feel hungry after a meal. However, I was still hungry after chips, salsa, a shared app, and my entree. I felt like the entree portion was skimpy for the price. Even though it was delicious, it was not a good value.
Mago is one of our favorites. Consistently good food and drink, great service, and a menu broad enough to please just about anyone. This visit I had the best seared tuna I have ever eaten. This place is terrific for brunch. A great location to visit while you take a break from shopping. We will be back soon.
Table side guacamole was a nice experience. First time here and ordered margarita special so I thought until I was handed the bill. The waitress should have informed me which ones were the special. I would not have ordered what I did at double the price. This was my first time and would have liked correct information.
Great food and service. Three salsas served with chips. Nice drink menu. The tableside guacamole is delicious but if you truly like it hot make sure to ask for hot (but, like the "real" hot). They seem a bit cautious. Their hot was my mild to medium. The molcajete fajitas are soooo good. Colorful decor too.
