Mago Grill & Cantina - South Barrington
Yes, it's delightful but make a reservation, especially on the weekend.
I love everything about Mago, except the live music. It's way too loud to be playing in a dining room, with people trying to enjoy a meal. Much, much too loud. While we love Mago, our group has indicated they'd prefer to go elsewhere so we can hear each other speak.
I have been here many times the past few years. It seems that the prices have gone up, but the quality of the food has gone down...a lot! $15.00 for a steak burrito is fine, IF you could actually find any meat in it.
Rice and beans are not included in the price. I was told in the past it’s because rice and beans are in the burritos. I have tried other items on the menu, but it has been hit or miss. I think I have given this restaurant enough of a chance and will not be returning in the future.
Also, the mariachi band on Wednesday nights is way to loud for a small area like Mago.
It’s more aggravating than entertaining.
Waitress was neglectful. We needed more tortillas and see didn’t come around until the end of the meal. Usually have better service.
Good food and service! Truly one of favorites to go too! Highly recommend.
It can get a little crowded, spaces are a little bit tight but overall I really enjoyed the service and food.
Love this restaurant unique menu friends enjoyed it too! A little loud but tolerable.
We had a great dinner celebrating my birthday with friends. We had a reservation and were seated right away. The margaritas, table side guacamole, and all the dinners were really good. We will definitely be back.
A favorite place! Fantastic atmosphere and service outdone only by the amazing food. For lunch, you can't bet the taco specials - two of the same for $7. I always choose the Carne Asada (marinated skirt steak) - with plenty of super-tender, perfectly seasoned steak and caramelized onions, it's my favorite. All other dishes I've had at Mago ae equally as delicious. Only thing on my wish list is for Mago to be just a bit closer!
Outside table was small for four and large appetizer plates and such made it difficult. The guacamole dish was massive and heavy. Music was too loud! All else was very good - food, service and ambiance!! Will return definitely!!
When it is busy they will not go by reservation times very well. They will seat the scary people who complain first putting others who have earlier reservations further down on the list. Getting a table here is very frustrating.
We had a reservation for 5:30 we got seated at 6:00. The service was very slow and our server didn’t come back very often. We had to ask for more water five times. Not enough cooks working.
Last visit was on Mother's Day. It was a busy place. I don't believe they allocated enough time for their reservations. Although we had reservations, we still had to wait about 10-15 minutes because all tables were full. Side dishes for food arrived cold, not warm, cold. Waitress fixed immediately. Ambiance was amazing. Food was delicious as always.
I went for mother’s Day not knowing it was buffet style only. The food was not the greatest and not what I expected. I wanted to eat from menu. We weren’t even done eating and they were already picking up the food. Meaning we had an hour just to eat. I’m which when you go with kids 1 hour isn’t enough lol. With the price of what I paid for what I got not worth it.
la comida siempre tiene un sabor, muy rico, los meseros y gente que trabaja ahi te atiende muy bien, lo univo es que considero que su buffet es un poco simple y no muy bariado para el precio, pero en general en sabor es rico
We love the food and drinks at Mago! However our service was not that great. Our waitress hardly checked in with us, and it didn't seem to be overly busy. I would definitely go back for the food and drinks. The tacos are outstanding and everything is very fresh. Hopeful for better service next time
Great service, delicious shrimp taco, guac made to table
Had a lovely time. Food was delicious, I strongly recommend the vegetarian fajitas. The place is really very beautiful.
Excellent choices on menu with a good selection of vegetarian choices. Friendly atmosphere, good service.
Love Mago. BUT, Buffett is just not worth it at all. 35/adult and 17 per kid...there simply isn’t the variety or quality of food to justify that price. If you are going to drop 130bucks on a family of four on a buffet, go to mckray, 20x the choices.
The brunch at Mago's was excellent! Maria, the server was wonderful and very attentive! I highly recommend this restaurant! Excellent food and service!!
la comida y bebidas estan ricas, el ambiente es agradable y el servicio es bueno. siempre puedes pasar un buen tiempo ahi con amig@s y familia
The bar ran out of Miller lite, had only one bottle and decided to try other draft beers and a no go on that and still charge me for beers that I didn't like.
They were undergoing some renovations while I was there that's why the ambiance score was low. Usually there's a fun, eclectic vibe but not so much that evening. The food was outstanding as always. Service was great.
I ordered three tacos and found a women's polished fingernail in my mouth that was in one of my tacos. It was a torn nail. Whoever was preparing the food was not wearing gloves. I brought this to the attention of management who took the nail and checked with those working in the kitchen. He came back stating there is only one women in the kitchen and she's not wearing polish. I showed him my nails which I keep short and were polished with pink polish. The nail from my food was a dark burgundy. The manager apologized and the check was brought to us. We were told they took 50% off of the check. I was offended that we were being asked to pay at all. My husband and son went to the bathroom and the server returned to our table stating there would be no charge. I understand things happen but the kitchen staff should be wearing gloves when they prep the food as in the day before for the next day. The taco was the Al pastor meat and that from what the manager advised is prepped in advance. I will not return to this location and not because of this one incident but the service is really not good when I've dined here in the past.
It wasn’t too crowded because it was a Sunday night, but our waiter was very attentive and helpful. The food is good but has a little too many ingredients on the plate. It is also pretty spicy
The food here is always exceptional. Freshly made and different from other Mexican restaurants. The table side Guacamole is a must!!
Catalina provided excellent service with a smile and was very knowledgeable about the menu, making great recommendations. The woman who prepared the guacamole tableside was absolutely lovely! We had a wonderful evening!
Food is very good. Guacamole is excellent. Good/friendly service, reservation was ready right as we walked in.
Always a great time. Great food and excellent service
excellent tableside guacamole, love the tacos and sangria. great service.
Good live musical atmosphere and great variety of food. Nice place to be with friends. Table reserved on time, everything ok. I recommended.
We probably waited 20-30 minutes for our 8:00 reservation and were treated to guacamole for our patience. Margaritas and table-side guacamole were fantastic! Two of our 5 entrees were incredibly salty. We ate some of the entrees - thank goodness for guacamole! In all fairness we did not tell our server about and should have. It was late enough and we had additional plans so didn’t want to bother with the further delay it would have caused.
Very tasty, friendly service and bright decor. Just a little pricey.
Best Mexican food in the Burbs!
Enjoyed the food The guacamole was amazing my children enjoyed the desert I will be going back again It was a little pricey but overall a good time
Excellent service and food!!!
I don't like when they bring out the food and have no idea who the food belongs to on the table. They call out the dish and just stare at you to raise your hand.... amateur service. Our waitress was friendly but her timing was so off. She'd ask for a box when 2 out of 3 people still had their fork in their hand...eating. (???whhhat???) Then shortly after, offered dessert menu when we weren't done w our main dish. The restaurant was not that busy for a weekend lunch. As we were leaving, the host saw was walking up towards the entrance. Turns his back, looks at the TV. As we were half way out the door, he then says Bye. Mmm. Okay. Won't go back.
Everything was amazing!! Love the fact that all the staff spoke Spanish!! Food and drinks were worth it !
Mago was fantastic. Great service and excellent food
