Mago Grill & Cantina - Arlington Heights Ratings and Reviews
Our server greeted us and we were served glasses of lukewarm water. He couldn't explain the specials, but assured us they were good. Had to ask three times for a glass of ice for our water.
We each ordered a margarita - one regular and a frozen mango margarita. He brought 2 regular margs. I wanted something without cilantro, but was informed that it was pre-made earlier in the day. Food was just so-so. Had asked for separate checks, but the server brought 1 check. All in all not a pleasant experience. Will not be returning.
Our first time there was for our pre anniversary dinner. It was great. The service was lovely we were attended to often by our waitress. She was very friendly and made sure to check in and peek over to check on us. The food was served hot, and was flavorful. My favorite part was the guacamole being made fresh in our view. The flavor was amazing and everything even the main dishes were freshly made with fresh ingredients. Our table was in a well lit open area, we were able to converse amongst ourselves in comfort. The dining experience was one to remember because the place was so clean, bright, smelled of the foods being cooked(yum) and the service was great. Waitresses and waiters are very polite, helpful to one another and speak English & Spanish. We will be making plans to return for another date night. Plus there was a convincing Groupon coupon available which is why we decided to try it out. Best place we could have gone for our date.
This is my favorite restaurant! Everything is always great. They always give you 3 unique salsas with chips and and if you show any interest at all in mole, they'll probably bring you a flight of 5 different kinds, all of which are fascinating, delicious and awesome. It is hard to decide what to order. But that's why I love coming back again and again. Birthdays are fun here.
Always love visiting Mago! Great food and wonderful sangria. Dined with a friend early on a Saturday night - we both had tacos and loved them. I had a chipotle shrimp and mahi mahi - both were delicious, with bright flavors and just enough spice. (Don't remember what type of tacos my friend had, but she loved them.) The complimentary chips and salsa are always yummy. Only less than optimal experience: the host sat us in a room where there was a large noisy party - a kids party - and we had to ask to be moved to the other room, which wasn't as raucous. Not sure why she thought we'd be okay with the loud room, but we were moved and our meal was great, as was our server.
Service was fine. Food was fair but not exceptional. My pork tenderloin medallions were over cooked and hard. Sides for the mole dish were fine but didn't add to the meal. Mole sauce was complex and flavorful but did not save the meat. Drinks were sweet and strong.
We came here on a quiet Monday night with out of town friends. The food was pretty good as usual (as we expect, for the relatively high prices). Service was friendly, but the entrees arrived 5 minutes after appetizers. Then they wasted food by bringing new chips & salsa after the entrees. Seems to be having some growing pains, or just going thru the motions, not so much focus on service as in the past.
Love the atmosphere very colorful! I was concerned because I don't like spicy and the menu sounded spicy. We ordered guacamole and they make it at the table. Even the mild was spicy for me so I asked the waiter what would be good. He offered to bring me my own guacamole! And he recommended non spicy dishes. And it was really good.
the restaurant had just opened in a new location so lacked a coffee machine ( I usually finish with aan expresso). Service was friendly and fast. My friend had not eaten Mexican food before so this was a good choice. Will go again next time I'm in Chicago's NW suburbs
Normally Mago is top notch as far as food, but the last couple times it has come down a notch. Of the four of us, none were all that happy with our food. For instance, my chorizo taco's crispy potatoes were literally burnt Ruffles. I was very disappointed in that minor detail.
As always, it is a fun atmosphere and the homemade guacamole made at your table is a must.
The food I was able to consume was delicious, however beware if you have an allergy. We placed an order of tamales for the table. There was no mention of either avocado or plantain on the menu but I reminded our server to be sure that there was no cross contamination in the kitchen. He assured the table that there was nothing that contained either of those ingredients. Well, as I scooped a serving for myself, I noticed green and decided to ask again (for the third time) if there was avocado or plantain. Our server said he would double check. Needless to say, he ran over to our table minutes later hoping that I had not tried the tamales yet as they contained BOTH avocado and plantains! Luckily, I had held off on trying the food.
A server should know the menu and the kitchen should read and be ultra sensitive to allergies! The restaurant should really focus on educating the servers, as well as the kitchen about how serious allergic reactions can be and to take all requests seriously. Needless to say, I will not be eating there again.
