Igniting a culinary renaissance upon opening in 1990, Charleston's most popular restaurant is located at the site of the city's original Customs House (circa 1739). Led by chefs Don Drake and Kelly Franz, Magnolias remains a forerunner in upscale Southern cuisine, blending traditional ingredients and cooking techniques with a modern flair for artful presentations.

Magnolias Ratings and Reviews
Overall, this is a solid "must go to" restaurant in Charleston. It's definitely on the upscale side so I would suggest going during brunch if you don't want to spend as much for a "fancy dinner" but still have the option of trying some of Magnolia's signature dishes. I tried the shellfish over grits which was the perfect portion without feeling too full. The taste was phenomenal. I especially liked the lobster butter sauce. Do yourself a favor and try this place if you're ever in Charleston - you won't regret it!
One word. Wonderful. We were out with friends post theatre. My job to get a dinner reservation. Arrived at magnolias and I looked at my phone and realized I'd made the reservation for the wrong night. The restaurant was packed since it was restaurant week, but the hostesses couldn't have been nicer. They escorted us to the bar and said they'd accommodate us in a few minutes....great table, great food, great service.
Our server was outstanding. Steven was extremely attentive and knowledgeable not only about the food and drinks but the local scene as well. He made several recommendations which were excellent choices and made the evening very special for my wife and I. The food was very good and the portions were IMO fair. All in all we had a fantastic night and would highly recommend Magnolias.
My husband and I, along with another couple, went to Magnolias for Restaurant Week. It was wonderful! Our waitress, Suzie, was very professional-but so warm and friendly too! Food was delicious. I had the Brussels sprout salad, the short ribs entree, and the raspberry lemonade cake. Yummy! My husband enjoyed his deviled eggs, pork chop entree (big portion) and same cake. I 💕 Restaurant Week! You can try out restaurants at a more reasonable cost. We will be back to Magnolias again!
We were in Charleston for two days and Magnolias was highly recommended by a friend so we looked forward with great anticipation. It was a cold evening and our Ooen Table reservations were fouled up. We had 7:30pm reservations, but tried to get them changed to 8pm but were unsuccessful. There was confusion and we we placed at a table near the front door which constantly opened to let cold air in. Nonetheless our waitress came soon and took our orders. The appetizer came quickly, but there was no cheese in one of the almond Brie pieces. Then, an hour and fifteen minutes later (even though we were told 20 minutes earlier that our entrees were on their way) the food arrived...cold and/or tepidly warm. We sent them back...it only took 20 minutes for the food to return. The dishes were quite good and creative; however, the evening was spoiled. To the restaurants credit, they took an entree and appetizer off the bill. I would like to try them again as I chalked it up as a miscommunication between the waitress and kitchen. The food was very good.
Huevos rancheros is the bomb. Get it and thank me later. Hubs had the country fried steak and it was good. Not great but good. He also ordered a Bloody Mary that was ok. Not the best we’ve had so still looking for the best in Charleston. Service was superb. Ask for Stella.
Chose Magnolia’s for celebrating our 45th wedding anniversary on our first trip to Charleston. We couldn’t have made a better choice. We couldn’t believe the speed with which we were seated and our drink orders taken. Our cups of the delicious crab bisque arrived promptly. As soon as we had finished the soup our main dishes arrived. We ordered coffee to prolong the experience and enjoyed the shared cinnamon ice cream, which was also delicious. Our waitress was excellent. All in all, a wonderful experience.
This was our first visit to Magnolia’s. The atmosphere was nice. We liked the white tablecloths. The staff was well-trained, and very polite. The food was delicious, although the portion size for one of the entres was small. We would recommend Magnolia’s to friends and would return.
Our food and service was excellent! My only negative were the drinks. I had two cocktails and neither tasted very good. The dining experience was very great and Magnolia's is decorated very well. I suggest no jeans, but rather business casual or better. Would definitely go back.
Everything about this place was damn near perfect. The food was outstanding, the portions were large without being wasteful, & the service was excellent!
We only down voted because we could hear the Expo shouting orders to the Kitchen, & the tables were a few inches too close. These are very minor things. We generally don't give perfect reviews, as that shows no room for improvement.
Knowing Magnolias fried green tomatoes as a "must" for Charleston, we were not disappointed by "the tail that wags the dog" as the duck and fish entrees, to say nothing of the interesting yet still affordable wine list made the pre-New Years trip from Boston far more than a Big Chill escape. And of course the complimentary anniversary dessert was a most tasteful touch.
Good food, good service. Location in historic Charleston is very convenient, with plenty of parking options nearby. Only negative was the hostess telling us to wait several minutes when we arrived at our reservation time, and there were empty tables. She later seated us in the back away from light.
