Igniting a culinary renaissance upon opening in 1990, Charleston's most popular restaurant is located at the site of the city's original Customs House (circa 1739). Led by chefs Don Drake and Kelly Franz, Magnolias remains a forerunner in upscale Southern cuisine, blending traditional ingredients and cooking techniques with a modern flair for artful presentations.

Magnolias Ratings and Reviews
We were dining out for our 45th wedding anniversary with all of their staff acknowledging our occasion several times which was a nice touch. Chuck, our server, was very attentive, made great recommendations, and his service was outstanding. We return to Magnolias mainly due to their great constant quality of food and extremely well prepared dishes. From starters to dessert our evening there was truly a FIVE STAR experience.
James was a truly wonderful waiter and gave us helpful advice on our selections. We loved the fried green tomatoes with white cheddar & caramelized onion grits, country ham, tomato chutney. Yummy! Our main courses were Carolina BBQ Pulled Pork and Cedar Plank Salmon. The Pulled Pork meal was plentiful and enough to bring half home to be appreciated for another dinner. The salmon was served on a piece of cedar plank and had baby potatoes, green beans, artichokes, diced egg, and lemon-caper vinaigrette (I asked not be have the fennel included although it comes with the meal. I highly recommend Magnolias for anyone visiting Charleston and wanting to experience the best in southern food and service.
Truly outstanding food. Wonderfully prepared. Great flavors. Our party of two had appetizer of fried green tomatoes with entrees of roasted duck breast with duck gumbo and a fresh catch special of flounder encrusted in delicate Parmesan. Dinner came with a sensational loaf of sourdough bread with a cream cheese-like butter spread. Service is efficient. The place was packed but our 7 pm dinner reservation got us seated immediately in a quieter back room instead of noisy front room. Food is the star.
Very nice dinner ...waiter was very nice and helpful. My sister & I split the chicken liver app & then split the fried chicken entree. Loved them both & just enough for us. Not a problem at all splitting them. Nice ambiance, a little noisy, but luckily we were near the front away from some large groups, so not bad at all. Would definitely return.
Well I have eaten here many times in the past and I’m a local so this is my default restraunt when visitors come to Charleston. That will probably change after this last experience. The food was dry, and over cooked. Mine was actually pretty tasteless for a flounder. So I paid 50 dollars for a very bad meal. I have been to magnolias as I said for years and don’t mind the cost as long as it is worth it. Unfortunately it will be a while if ever that I’ll return. Take that from a local.
Lunch at Magnolia's was a perfect way to start our getaway in Charleston. From appetizers to specials to dessert -- all the dishes delivered! The specialty cocktails we tried were seasonal and excellent. Service was very attentive and friendly. The recommendations were spot on. Guests wore everything from T-shirts and jeans to business outfits. A comfortable white-tablecloth experience!
Superb; food was excellent - wife said she thought buttermilk fried chicken was excellent. I really liked the special - pink snapper. Service staff very attentive without being intrusive. Drinks were great, no skimping on the “booze.” Will repeat ourselves, but would recommend, as well as suggest reservations and going a bit early
We went to Magnolias for Sunday brunch. Everything was fantastic! The bacon biscuit appetizer is incredible and everyone loved their entrees especially the fresh catch and the country fried steak breakfast. Our waiter Robert gave us phenomenal service and excellent recommendations! Wonderful meal!
Although we had to wait well beyond our reservation time for a table, our meals were very good and the service was professional to the last detail. The consensus of our group was that Magnolias tends to be a tad pricey--a few dollars more on all food and drink items--that comparable restaurants that are more oriented towards tourists than locals. Nonetheless, we enjoyed a fine meal and are glad we tried Magnolias.
My daughter and I went for brunch on a Sunday around noon. The food was wonderful and we had great service. I had the buttermilk chicken and the collard greens were the best I have ever eaten! Magnolias is a classic southern Charleston restaurant....many typical southern menu items and other things, as well. If you are looking for a charming Charleston restaurant, this is your place!
Absolutely wonderful. This was our last meal ( Saturday brunch) before leaving Charleston, what a lasting memory. The chicken liver starter caused a family feud, he did not want to share. Our main course selection flounder for him, for me catfish. Each plate was beautifully presented and seasoned perfectly. I love to cook and break down the ingredients when possible, our meals were a nice challenge. Complex flavors , delicious. Our server, Matthew was very knowledgeable, engaging and attentive. At no time did we feel rushed. The manager stopped by our table, too. As for the atmosphere, we arrived just as they opened, it filled up quickly. Although there were a number of large groups the volume did not get uncomfortably loud. We highly recommend Magnolia's.
