Igniting a culinary renaissance upon opening in 1990, Charleston's most popular restaurant is located at the site of the city's original Customs House (circa 1739). Led by chefs Don Drake and Kelly Franz, Magnolias remains a forerunner in upscale Southern cuisine, blending traditional ingredients and cooking techniques with a modern flair for artful presentations.

Magnolias Ratings and Reviews
Magnolia’s was recommended to us and since we already had dinner reservations at other restaurants, we decided to eat there for lunch. It was excellent—great service. We shared the potatoes chips with blue cheese—really tasty and could have sufficed as a meal for the both of us. I had the shrimp and sausage with grits with a nicely spiced sauce but not too spicy and my wife had shrimp and scallops with grits which was also excellent. We had a cocktail that we asked to be made not too sweet and s glass of wine each which was a very fair pour for the price. We enjoyed the experience.
I chose Magnolias for my birthday dinner and was very pleased. My server, Niki (?), was pleasant and knowledgeable. I ordered the boiled peanut salad and their catfish entree, both of which were ample and delicious. For dessert I chose the pecan cheesecake brownie. Niki delivered it with a lit candle which was s nice touch, especially because I was dining alone. The ambiance was nice. Not too crowded, the tables were well spaced to give each party personal space. The bar was nearby and sometimes it got a little noisy with the patrons erupting in laughter. But it wasn’t too. distracting. A very nice place for a special evening.
Sunday brunch.... very enjoyable. The bread was amazing! We don't usually even eat the bread places bring out, but thank goodness we did! Crusty with good chew, but lacking that too sour taste of some sour dough breads. We both enjoyed our meals.... country fried steak and spicy shrimp and sausage with grits. Berry flavorful and well prepared. Service was great and cocktails were very good.... so nice to have great alternatives to the tired old bloody Mary! I had an oranges spiced drink that was great.... hubby had a rosemary gin drink that wad very refreshing.
We had a delicious Sunday brunch today. Scott was a terrific waiter. I had the parmesan crusted flounder - delicious! We were a table of four and were seated in the back area which proved to be quieter, although next time I may request the front room. It had a great energy and vibe. We all ordered seafood dishes and loved both the presentation as well as the flavors of each dish. I can see why locals return to Magnolia’s, and every visitor should try it at least once.
We were celebrating a friend being in town. We had a wonderful meal. Two of us had the fresh catch of the day which was the flounder. Best flounder we have ever had outside of our own kitchen. The other person had the pasta and seafood which she loved also. We were not rushed and they made us feel special. Thank you for a wonderful dining experience.
I had a great experience with my date there. The food was excellent. The staff was very friendly. I would recommend this place if you have a date. The atmosphere was nice and romantic. I will be making another trip with my with date here when we come back into town.
This was my third visit but first review. I’ve been here for a family get together, lunch with friends and finally a visit for drinks and appetizers. Magnolia’s never fails to be great. The homemade chips are delicious and the southern spring rolls a tasty surprise. No one does fried chicken as good as Magnolia’s. The sandwiches are wonderful, the fried green tomato BLT is my favorite. The bar has extensive liquor and wine choices. The staff has always been attentive but not annoyingly attentive. Great experience!
We enjoyed everything about our visit. The one disappointment we had was that we always order PEI mussels when on the menu. Your's were good but we felt they were not PEI mussels. If for some reason you could not get them...we feel they should have been taken off the menu that evening!!!! They are always plump and juicey and have a taste of there own...these were very small but not what we paid for.
Second time visiting Magnolias in the past year and second consecutive impression of "meh". Spouse and I were there for Valentine's. Ordered Fried Green Tomatoes for appetizer, the Salmon and BBQ plates for our meals. Appetizer was one of the best I've ever tasted of that famous Low Country starter, but our meals were barely average. Don't get me wrong, the food wasn't bad, but I've had better at a chain like Carrabbas, so if they're going to charge $30+ a plate and position itself among the best downtown Charleston restaurants, I'm just expecting more. I'm not sure we'll be back to see if a 3rd visit is the charm.
As always, the food and ambiance at Magnolias was top-notch. We were all absolutely amazed by each of our choices! So very good! However, we felt our server was a little snippy. Perhaps because we only chose to have appetizers, drinks and deserts and not a full course meal? Don’t know, but his attitude, especially when he brought our check and we asked him to split it according to what each couple had, was not what I’d expect from one of the classiest venues in Charleston. He acted very bothered by this request, as if everyone who dines there has one person who pays for the table. Im sure there are a few who have that capability but, as a server, I’d either ask the table their billing preference or go ahead and split it between couples. It’s a shame that put a damper on an otherwise lovely evening.
