Magnolias at the mill Ratings and Reviews
Magnolia's at the Mill continues to be a charmer. While not a 5 star experience, the restaurant delivers an all-around good to better dining experience at a reasonable price. The steamed mussels, especially the Thai version, are a terrific choice for a starter to share or as an entrée accompanied by any of the salad options. The daily specials occasionally step it up, but in my experience, the restaurant's strengths lie in the menu items.
Our family had wanted to try Magnolia's for some time. Their Purcellville location is lovely; their parking lot is always full. They are vibrant participants in the community, serving both local produce and wines. Our son's high school graduation seemed a perfect occasion. The service staff were absolutely wonderful, and the ambience quite nice, but we found the food to be just OK. Perhaps it was just an off afternoon in the kitchen, but it seemed a bit pricey for what you get. We loved the convenience of OpenTable reservations, however!
Womderful experience. My dinner, the seafood pot, was one of the best dishes I have ever eaten. Our group loved the food, the service, the respect for reservation time.... Much more casual than we expected (I won't wear a dress anymore) but very comfortable!
We will certainly return, and bring others with us!
Fantastic Prime Rib, my husband really enjoyed the meal. I tried the Blue Crab combo, and was very impressed! I've never had Crab cooked this way, and I'll get it again. LOVED it!! Super yum, thanks for a great dining experience, and a wonderful evening for my husbands Birthday evening. Great job!!
We'll be back, with family, and friends,

This is the second time my wife and I have been to Magnolias at the mill. This time for our anniversary. The staff went above and beyond to help us and gave us a great night. The food was great as well as the service, it was very clean and could be a fmaily restaurant or a nice getaway for a couple on a date night.
Not much in fine dining in Purcellville but Magnolias is that gem. The food is outstanding. We had a 6:30 reservation & were seated next to an extremely loud party of 6; which made for difficult conversation. Another party had complained for a similar reason. We spoke with the mgr who told us that it was because of the room we were in. There was another party of 6 nearby too. They spoke normally & did not present a problem. The mgr agreed to move us, but had nothing available & told us we could wait in the bar. You'd think, as a gesture of good will, given that we had a reservation, that he would have at least offered to buy us a round. Disappointing. Overall, once we were at another table, we had a nice experience. Great waitress!
Since we'd heard of Magnolias for some time, thought we would drive over after stable tour. Food, drinks, and service were excellent. We were quite surprised to find such a thriving establishment. We usually drive 66 from DC/Annapolis to Winchester. Our 6 p.m. reservation was a wise choice since the restaurant was filled with everyone from prom attendees to Rolling Thunder attendees. Like the "Open Table" option for reservations.
I live in Oakton with good friends who have moved out to Winchester and Front Royal. I suggested meeting for dinner at Magnolia's mainly because of its location and because I knew it was good. The evening was perfect: excellent menu selections (the laquered salmon was absolutely wonderful), friendly, efficient service, good wine and a corner table for the six of us which provided a feeling of privacy even though the restaurant was "energetically noisy." We surely will return for more of the same.
Magnolia's is our personal favorite for the area. My only complaint is service is spotty. Some of the wait staff clearly don't belong working there as they have no clue, but the majority of the wait staff are absolutely spot on!
We have never, EVER been disappointed wirh our food... and we have been there over 20 times the last couple of years.
The chef keeps it local, fresh, and real. Never too pretentious, and changes with the seasons. What a keeper!
Fixed meal menu- special menu for Mother's Day. Four courses. Dinner plates were good, especially the prime rib. Dessert was an assortment/sampler plate and nothing on that was very good. Skip dessert and load up on savory calories instead! Although regular dessert menu is probably worth trying.
We had very slow service and the swordfish and salmon dishes were disappointments. The swordfish which came dry and over cooked. The waitress said the chef was sorry and she brought another serving which was better. I scrapped off the topping (a jumble of strong flavors which overpowered the swordfish) and enjoyed it with the polenta. My husband' s salmon was very salty and a disappointment.
We've been dining here for the last several years and lately it's been a miss. This last time we ordered the fried calamari appetizer and it was not as tasty as past times. Almost a little rubbery with a slight fishy smell. Then we had the spare ribs which is usually a big hit. One order was perfect looking ribs while the other was completely covered in hunks of fat. So once we cut off the fat there wasn't much left. Goat cheese pizza was a little soggy and bland. After that we didn't want to order anything else.
Service was average. The people at front were friendly but I was disappointed in the waitress who didn't seem to care. The food looked good though I think the way to go here is order a pizza. The scallops appetizer was really great (my sister got 2 orders of it as her meal). The Pork Shank was a large portion and pretty tasty. The special Lamb Curry was not good as the meat was tough (I thought it was supposed to be braised but I guess not). The dessert-Chocolate Story-delicious. The drinks such as the St. Germain one was very light and tasty - the mojito was great but not as light - pretty strong (fine for me!). Great beer menu. 6 of us dined and most were pleased with most parts of the meal.
We have been to Magnolia's twice. The first time, it was very good and had a really unique atmosphere: part steakhouse part romantic night away. We used it for the second part and it turned out to be a bit disappointing. To their credit, it was a busy night. The waiter seemed inconvenienced by us on several occasions when we asked for a side plate stating: "I'd have to go downstairs to get it". Well, go downstairs then! Appetizer was advertised as crispy oysters w/ sausage and had some sort of rotel and Velvetta on it. Oysters were delicious, but ruined by the salsa concoction on top. Shrimp&grits was actually shrimp over polenta with more of the salsa concoction smoothing it (advertised as sausage and ham). Kids running around w/o shoes
My wife and I love old Mills; in fact we were married in one at Millwood, VA not too far from Magnolias. We were not disappointed; the Mill is fantastic and much care taken in highlighting the old charm of its component’s. It was very busy for a Thursday evening but the food was spectacular I had the Special, a local raised Pork Chop and my wife the Brick Oven baked Ahi Tuna Wellington both were absolutely delectable. Anna was our waitress and was very attentive, although due to the busyness of the restaurant the service could have been just a tad quicker. We had a wonderful experience.
