Magnolia - Hollywood - Permanently Closed Ratings and Reviews
The food wasn't bad. It just wasn't anything to right home about. And quite frankly appalled at the price for a simple cocktail. One Manhattan,$18.00? I'm a foodie and also a chef. Never have paid this much (except in Las Vegas) and Magnolia is a far cry from fine dining there.
Had a rowdy party of 8 on a Saturday night and everything was perfect. The waiter was fast with the drinks, honest with recommendations and didn't bat an eye when we asked him to take a picture (which *has* to be annoying.) We split appetizers and desserts, had our own entrees and at least 2-3 cocktails each and the final bill was beyond reasonable. The menu had something for everyone, even with multiple dietary restrictions, and the food was great. So pleased with the entire experience.
I was expecting this place to be a lot better. I came on a Thursday evening, the place was pretty empty..maybe 8 people at most. Our waiter was decent, he was quick and polite.
We ordered a few cocktails, Strawberry Fields and a Manhattan...they were alright..took the waitress like 10 minutes to make them (nobody was even there so couldn't figure that out.) Ordered the tuna tartar, it was good but wasn't anything special.
We decided to order the half chicken with brussel spouts and mashed potatoes. When we got our dinner, the brussel sprouts were burnt and the chicken was a little burned but that wasn't the real issue...it was SO salty.
I spoke with the waiter and this other guy, wasn't sure if he worked with the chef or was a water boy? However, they brought it to his attention and our waiter took $5 off our bill that was over $100 (mainly because we ordered drinks.) After all of this our waiter brought our check without even asking if we wanted desert, so we told him we would like the key lime pie. My girlfriend loves key lime pie and said it was way to sweet...I personally thought it tasted fine.
Honestly, for the prices and quality of food I would pass on this place. So many better places to go, I would like to try it again but not on my expense.
Remains a pleasant location in congested area where you can feel like you're getting away from it all. Excellent cocktails, and the food was good. Ahi was perfectly prepared with nice helping of spinach and wasabi mashed potatoes. Easy to hear everyone at table and a very enjoyable meal.
recently made reservations for my anniversary. It was on a Wednesday so I was expecting a nice and quiet dining experience. The staff was decent, but they failed to mention any specials. They rushed us thru our meal, and then was tol about specials after the bill came. Will hesitate if I go back, but probably won't. It was also pricier than I expected for an average restaurant.
The food at Magnolia was very tasty, presented well and we found to be very good value. The only down side we found, was dining on a Sunday it was very slow. Started out with us being the third table in the restaurant, but by the time we finished, we were the only two there. We felt because of the slow time, the service was too laid back and could have been more attentive. Overall though, we still did enjoy our dining experience and would likely return again.
Although the food was good, and the waiter was pleasant, we were crammed into a tiny booth between two other booths, so we were almost on top of the people next to us. The room was sweltering, and the waiter's answer to our statement that it was hot was, "yep, it is". "The A/C is on full blast". Then the worst part was that although we ordered our food about 5 minutes after being seated, it took 55 minutes for our food to be served. When I said something to the waiter he said, "Yeah, we got caught between the post-theater, and the pre-theater crowds". Still 55 minutes is ridiculous. Tiny booth, uncomfortably hot restaurant, and 55 minutes to be served our food. We will never go there again.....
Very nice inside though the restaurant has little curb appeal. We went for lunch and were the only 2 in the restaurant for about 45 minutes and only one other couple as we were leaving. Although the quiet is nice it is much too odd to eat in a restaurant without customers. It may be a better spot in the evening.
Between the three of us we had the fresh fish of the day, the beet salad with salmon added, and the short rib/grilled cheese sandwich, and we all liked our food very much. The side salads were unique with very fresh ingredients. I think for the price points involved the restaurant could spring for some type of bread for the table - the portions were adequate but not very big for the price. We went there before a play at the Pantages because our favorite place nearby did not have tables available. We would go there again for the convenience and good quality, but not ahead of our favorite!
If one of your group is in the valley and the other on the west side, this is a great middle meeting ground. It took each of us 20-30min to reach the restaurant. There was ample parking in the lot and street behind. We didn't partake in the bar, but the menu looked enticing. Lunch sandwiches came with greens versus fries which is a thumbs up in my book!
I made this reservation last minute since we needed to be in Hollywood around 9. When we walked in, I remembered we had been to the restaurant before and didn't really enjoy our dinner. What a change! The dinner we had on Friday was delicious! Truly, delicious. We both had salads and an entree and it was both reasonable and delicious! I was so impressed that I even mentioned how pleased we were to the host. I would definitely recommend this restaurant!!
We had been wanting to try this restaurant for quite awhile...it was a disappointment overall. My husband arrived early, the restaurant except for one table was completely empty. He was seated in the absolute worst table in the restaurant, closest to the hallway leading to the restrooms, why? We made reservations, the place was empty and he was treated horribly. I arrived, several employees at the front, no one smiled, I said I was meeting someone, and walked past them after feeling like I interrupted their chat. My husband was never offered a drink, an appetizer, just ignored until I was seated, again...why? We realized that this wasn't the vibe either of us wanted for our "date night" so we left, went to another restaurant and enjoyed the rest of our evening. Would I return, not likely, too many options in this part of town. It's unfortunate we were both looking forward to enjoying Magnolia. As a side note, we did not order anything, but in order to post a review this site requires a rating on food, hence the" poor "review.
We arrived at 11:30am and though we were seated right away waited 10 minutes fer a server for even our drink order (there were only two other tables occupied at that time ). Placed our order and waited over 20 minutes for food. Staff was very inattentive and had to be flagged down several times even though they were standing close by. Food was good though the eggs were not hot on 2 orders. No time to send back. May try it again when in the area. Nice and close to the Pantages.
I have been here a few times and I must say the service at Magnolia is always impeccable. They check in an appropriate amount of times, always keep our water filled, and everyone is just so friendly.
Food is excellent. Highly recommend this gem of a restaurant!
