Magdalena Ratings and Reviews
It's Magdalena, so you're going to spend a lot of money on dinner, especially if you add wine. Our dinner for two ($99 + supplements), plus two glasses of wine a piece, was $400...but it was lovely. The food was tasty, the dining experienced comfortable, relaxing pacing on the courses, etc.
We had high expectations for our Valentines dinner, and had selected Magdalena anticipating a special evening. Our expectations were exceeded! From the friendly folks at the Valet stand to the polite, attentive and well informed staff, it was clear that our enjoyment was the goal of each. Our server Justin was outstanding. Knowledgeable, present as needed, and enjoyable to have as a part of our evening.
Although there was a limited Valentines menu, the offerings were numerous and well diversified. And, the food.....
There is no doubt that this was one of the most spectacular meals I have eaten, and my companion felt the same. Each item was beautiful to see. The blending of flavors and textures was sublime, but obviously done with remarkable skill and thought. There was not a morsel that did not satisfy every aspect of wonderful dining.
There are 5 separate and distinct dining areas. Ours was tastefully designed and furnished. Although we had neighbors close by, the noises are nicely muted. The bar area was filled with customers, but again the noise level was low.
Magdalena is within the Ivy Hotel, a luxury boutique hotel in Mount Vernon. An 19th century mansion with a variety of accommodations and services- I would like to return and explore the hotel.
Our first visit to Magdalena was exceptional. It is an expensive restaurant, and worth the price. We will return!!
The food was exquisite and the décor was tastefully understated. The service was also excellent. From the valets to the wait staff, everyone took special care to ensure that my guests and I were well cared for. The service and meal were excellent from beginning to end.
For starters, I had their version of cerviche-they did not skimp on the seafood. It was very good. The other 2 had the cauliflower soup which came with a nice portion of bay scallops. As much as I enjoyed the cerviche the soup was even better. My fish was excellent. The steaks were perfect. My desert-Meyer lemon tart was delightful. The cocktails were excellent if a bit slow in coming out but we weren’t in any hurry. Wines in every price range. The only down side at all was that the table next to us was a tad noisy but not in a rude way. Will go back when the weather is warmer to try out the garden area
I went with “my girls” to celebrate my 50th birthday. Service as always was outstanding. For the first time ever, the food was so-so. I ordered the scallops dish and it was lukewarm. That was surprising. Nevertheless, we are always treated like VIPs which is a lovely treat. Hopefully, the ok food was a one-off.
This was our first trip to Magdalena, but it will not be our last. The room we were in was lovely and it was so nice to be able to have quiet conversation. We were there for NYE and there was a pre fixe 4 course dinner for $125. There were 4 choices for each of the courses and my husband and I could have been happy with any of the choices. We both loved our meal. Dottie was our server and she was perfect. If the regular menu is anything like the NYE menu, this restaurant is worth the drive.
Enjoyed a lovely New Years Eve dinner with husband and son at this beautiful hotel and restaurant. Special four course dinner for the holiday was prepared and it was divine. It's an indulgence to go, but it did not disappoint.
Have also been to an afternoon tea here and it too, was perfection. The surroundings are superb and this boutique hotel is a gem in Baltimore. Looking forward to our next decadent trip!
NOT an "everyday" restaurant due to the pricy nature of the menu (plan on ~$100 per person). However, every dish is prepared exceptionally well and justifies the cost. The wine list and whiskey list are impressive and the bartenders are knowledgeable. An excellent choice for any special occasion!
Food and hospitality are both stellar. The foie gras, sturgeon, and lobster tail are each beautifully presented and simply melt in your mouth. What the menu may lack in variety it more than makes up for in execution. As a local, I’m confident to say this chef is one of the very best in Baltimore. The kitchen avoids local cliches yet delivers an elegantly straightforward, unpretentious, fine dining experience. Highly recommended for special occasion dining.
Magdalena's was a surprise gem from the complimentary valet parking to the delicious desserts and everything in between. The sophisticated, but relaxed setting partnered well with attentive, but not intrusive service. Our food could not have been better and the portions were just right.
We will definitely return and gladly recommend it to friends.
Quiet and romantic. Superb food. The truffle risotto is expensive but really good and had a lot of truffles. Very respectable wine list and prices were not out of sight. Greats ervice, very pleasant staff. Not for every night but a great place for a special occasion.
The restaurant is a beautiful place with great ambiance, our main courses were delicious and just enough. Dessert was simply delicious. My endive salad was just OK.
On another note, the down light above our table was out and made the reading of the menu difficult. Also, above the table next to ours was a spider web connecting the 2 hanging lamps and most of the hanging lamp's lights were dusty, not an appetizing site.
Our table was in the bar room area, back in a corner near to doors leading to the garden.
Magdalena always delivers with amazing cuisine and service. Attention to detail is clear and top priority. Chef's selections and execution are impeccable. There is a creative aspect to each plate, a small masterpiece with each course. A personal touch whether with the food or the staff, that even in a full restaurant, make you feel like the only table in the house. The staff is attentive without being overbearing. They know exactly when to check-in and when to give you space to indulge in your fill of libation from their extensive wine list. The décor is elegant and rich but not stuffy and quite comfortable. Magdalena is my go-to when I need a little extra attention, have a taste for delectable treats, a glass of bubbles with a girlfriend or just a want to impress...this place has it all.
This was a great restaurant for a special, high-end dinner where you want the best of everything. I took my wife here to give her a nice, pre-travel send-off, and based on the reviews I saw, I was confident the restaurant would be pretty good.
I am pleased to tell anyone it was much better than good, it was fantastic, one of the best dining experiences we've ever had. Everything from the chardonnay recommendation to the appetizers to the main course was excellently prepared, and there wasn't a mediocre item that we tasted. The beef was elegant and delicious, and the pork belly was very tasty and complex. Even the humble vegetable soup appetizer was smooth complexly flavorful. Our deserts, prepared in-house, were both fresh with perfect temperatures, and were delightful. The service was spot-on, well-timed, and charming, and significantly enhanced the experience, which we enjoyed for far longer that we usually take for dinner.
We don't typically give 5 stars across the board to restaurants because something is typically a little bit off. However, Magdalena's earned every star and we thoroughly enjoyed our meal and the experience. While we can't eat here every week, my wife has advised me that we will be back.
This restaurant had been recommended by a friend who said it was one of the best meals she has had. We were disappointed. The service was good but not outstanding as we had expected and the seating layout in the restaurant was not ideal. I think in the summer when it is warm and light at night and they use the outdoor seating it would be better but in winter it is a very small restaurant and we sat right by the bar. Not the ambience for a special occasion. The appetizer (mushroom soup) was amazing and my husband enjoyed the foie gras but the rib eye steak was the worst steak i have ever had in a fine dining restaurant. There was more fat than meat and it was difficult to eat. I recommend you try this restaurant if you go in the summer and avoid the rib eye steak!! Otherwise you would be better off at Ruth's Chris.
Perfect in every way! If you consider yourself a foodie this place is not to be missed. Can’t wait to go back again. The atmosphere is highly refined and posh but still comfortable and relaxing. Our server was superb and clearly well trained. Every dish was a culinary adventure. The wine list is world class and extensive. And there is free valet to boot. A perfect experience from start to finish.
A little disappointed. The cost of the meal with drinks was exorbitant. While they do carry unique dishes, it still seemed overpriced. Also, the wait staff was confused about which tables had which dishes several times. I did not like the open seating area in the back of this restaurant as much as the other seating in the front. It was too open and I could hear multiple conversations around me, so it wasn't very private. The food was delicious, however, aside from these drawbacks.
Magdalena is my favorite Baltimore restaurant. From the moment you arrive at the valet, you feel most welcome and special. The waiting staff is friendly and knowledgeable and the atmosphere romantic and inviting. The menu changes frequently and I am always pleased with the variety of choices. The food is incomparable and both a delight to one's palate and visual senses. The maitre'd always remembers previous guests and keeps a list of past favorite choices, even the type of water, plain or sparkling. A truly memorable and amazing experience. I can't wait to go back. It is ideal for holidays, celebrations, a romantic get-away or gathering with friends and/or family.
Couldn't have asked for a more. I went for my engagement dinner and Magdalena's distinguished Executive Chef Mark Levy prepared an unbelievably tasty feast. We did the white truffle tasting menu and would have paid twice what we did. Highlight of the meal was the lamb wellington which was as beautiful as it was delicious. We opted to skip the wine pairings and have Claudio the cellar manager/master sommelier pick us out some bottles from their cellar. Boom! He nailed it. Eric our server was unpretentious and extremely knowledgeable about the menu. He made us feel like we were his most important guests of the evening. In fact everyone at Magdalena made sure we were enjoying our special night. Even Marty, the hostess with the mostess!, stopped by to fill our water and check up to make sure we were enjoying everything. My only regret is not booking a room too. Having to leave was such a disappointment. We will definitely be back and can't recommend a more creative, elegant and enjoyable dining experience in the Baltimore/DC area. A once in a lifetime moment that my fiance and I will never forget. Thank you, Magdalena!
My venison was delicious and prepared as I requested. The lobster seemed to be missing something; perhaps we should have asked for drawn butter. Our waitress was attentive and discretely checked on us however she didn't describe in detail the dishes that we heard described by another waiter.
Magdalena is a creatively lovely restaurant unlike any other in Baltimore.
