The food was great, but it can get very crowded.
The short ribs arrived lukewarm and were so dry they were inedible, leathery and dry, as if they had been reheated multiple times or left over from the day before, however the monkey gland sauce was excellent. That, I ate. The boboti was just okay, probably because it was served almost cold. On the other hand, the waitress was both helpful and pleasant, taking care of our service promptly after mentioning we had tickets for BAM and would need to hurry out when we were finished.
This place was packed and had a line waiting to get in. Based on the reviews, Madiba should have been far better than it was. Did we order the wrong dishes or was this just a really bad night in the kitchen? We won't be back.
Very impressed with Madiba. Food was very good, ambience cool.
We had this really nice server who had started that day. He was really nice and genuinely concerned about our dining experience. There was another server, a woman, who was wearing shades and sauntering back and forth as though she was the cat's meow who was okay, but her mannerisms were quite irritating.
The food was just not my cup of tea. The drink was horrible. I would not return here again except for maybe the corn and the fries. Those two items were really, really good.
We have been there before and service and food were awesome. However, on Sunday April 26, 2015 the owner was not there to hover and the place was just chaos. We got seated within 5 min and that was the only good thing about our experience. The seater seated us at a cummunial table when other 2 seater tables were available. We were the first couple to be placed at the communial table but a 2nd couple who was seated long after us at the same table got acknowleded and served before us. We were completely ignored. We had to flag down a familiar face from our previous visit and he took our orders. Then the real wait began. Our appetizers took about 30 mins to arirve. We were on the verge of just getting up and walking out. The server apologized and said the kitchen is a bit of a mess and he himself is not sure what is going on. We have decided to give this restaurant a break and focus on others in the area.
Never tried South African Cuisine before. I think Madiba is a very good place to try something new.
The food was delicious. The place was cozy. We were a fairly large group therefore had a table indoors. But I would love to sit outside on the street next time.
The prices were a little bit expensive, but it definitely worth to try (also can not complain as everywhere @ Brooklyn is expensive nowadays :( )
We were so full after the meal therefore could not try anything from the desert menu. I would definitely go for a desert and coffee next time.
Draft beer choices are limited. We were lucky that night as they had six point sweet ale. which we love :)
Great food. Felt like I was in South Africa. Will certainly return!
the food was delicious, portions were perfect. the ambiance was this rustic homey experience. the cocktails were delicious and made with fresh ingredients. the staff was awesome. will definitely go back and recomend friends.
HARD TO BELIEVE THERE ARE SO MANY DELICIOUS TRADITIONAL SA DISHES.
MADIBA OFFERS THEM ALL IN A PERFECTLY RE-CREATED ENVIRONMENT WITH
VERY ATTENTIVE SERVICE.
We came from Manhattan on a cold February evening with spotty train service, intending to eat here before a 7:30 curtain at the new Polonsky Shakespeare Center on Ashland. We were thirty minutes late for our reservation, but the staff could not have been more accommodating. We only had about 35 minutes to eat, so just enough time for scrumptious samosas and the hearty, satisfying bobotie minced-beef casserole. Delicious! And we got to the show on time. We will definitely return when we can linger and sample more of the intriguing menu.
Very authentic and a real taste of home for a former South African like me.
Words cannot express how much I enjoyed this restaurant! From the door the service was perfect! And how can I describe the food? Absolutely remarkable! If you never had south African food before this is a good place to start. The flavors are out of this world. I'd make a special trip to New York again just to go to this restaurant!
The food was great and amazing!! Service was very very prompt, even with the food!
My first time @ MADIBA was exceptional! From the moment I walked into the door right until I left. Although the food was good, it wasn't spectacular. However, food alone is not what makes a great dining experience. So many elements are essential: location, decor, ambiance, welcome upon entering, wait staff (exceptional here, shout out to Edwin), and overall culture of restaurant. So, taking all that into consideration hands down MADIBA is a go to spot.
good food, great staff and one of the nicest owners!
...& by "real deal," I do not mean to suggest that I know anything about South African cuisine, but rather that is is a locally-owned & operated restaurant that serves good food, to which you can feel good about giving your money. I went this year, on my birthday, & although I hate being sung to in a restaurant full of people—it's not even that I mind being the center of attention; I just never know what I'm supposed to be doing, while people are standing there singing to me—one of my dinner companions must have mentioned to the staff that it was, in fact, my birthday & ever employee who crossed my path wished me a happy one. I thought that was far nicer & classier than the alternative & it really made the evening extra special.
Looking for something in the area that was different and this was a really good choice. The dining room is sizable, we were comfortable at our table and had not trouble chatting together and hearing each other. Our waitress was very helpful and patient with all our questions. The food was different and delicious. I had the fish soup which I had seen on the online menu and was looking forward to it. It did not disappoint. Delicious and distinctive and lots of fish! Look forward to going back again.
the first that I visited Madiba restaurant it was a great experience but this time for my daughter's birthday I was very disappointed. The place was freezing, we had to sit and eat with our coat on. The food wasn't great. Desert was burned even when they exchange it the second one was as burned as the first. I ordered the food but could not eat it. That was one birthday dinner disappointment.
I have been here about 3 times already, first for brunch and the other 2 for dinner. I feel like it's more of a dinner vibe though. I am South African and believe me, this food is truly authentic! It's very unique and for the more adventurous palate. The restaurant itself is casual, warm and welcoming, just like the South African people.
Pas and Vleis
Pap and Wors
Also a great wine list with all the wines being from South Africa.
We went to Madiba now in Jan 2015 for the 2nd time after really enjoying it in the summer last year. We arrived around 7pm and it was relatively quiet. The owner welcomed us in and showed us to the table and chatted to us openly. The food was delicious and tasted like it was prepared in the bright lights of Jozi or on Long street or even in a Klein dorpi in the Karoo! Great sized portions and rich, full flavours accompanied by well paired wines! We'll be back for sure, even if just to grab a quick beer and a pack of biltong!
Fell in love with this place the first time! The food was divine and the service was amazing as well. A friend and I enjoyed the evening from start to finish. We had the wings as an appetizer, she had prawns and rice for dinner, I enjoyed a lamb curry with rice. The dessert was the perfect finale! It was a custard and I fell in love. Recommend this place to anyone especially couples who love international eats.
Excellent food served in a fun, vibrant atmosphere.
Madiba has a relaxed, friendly atmosphere and the food is wonderful. We headed to Madiba this time for after-work snacks and beers before a Nets game, and the food and service didn't disappoint. Just a lovely, low-key spot that offers something a little out of the ordinary.
I should start by saying I never do these little survey things, but the service was so amazing and the good so delicious I really feel compelled. I invited a bunch of friends to join me there for dinner to celebrate the holidays and do a little secret santa gift exchange. We ate like kings and had an amazing evening, due in no small part to the ambiance and out of this world food. It's a crime that I can't remember the name of the woman who served us... she explained the entire menu to us and made wonderful recommendations. I think she wore large braids and wore glasses. I would love to have her again and hope she gets rewarded for this review!
If you're a Saffer and are missing home - this is the place to go to! It's quite expensive, but that's the price you have to pay if you want to have bobotie, boerewors and green Creme Soda Spar Letta style! The owner and manager is such a character - the kind that you just don't get in the US.
Loved the boerwoers sausage which was tasty and fresh. The pap (sp) cornmeal was excellent in combination with the tomato onion sauce. The chocolate cake was outstanding and the apricot pudding was too. I am not usually one to pay attention to decor, but I liked the posters and replicas of South African food boxes. Overall, the food was first rate, filling and hearty. I recommend it for anyone who is willing to try different cuisines.
I have been to Madiba a few times and I've always had a positive experience. The food was good and the service was also good.
Went for our one year wedding anniversary and we love this place! My husband and I always enjoy the steak with slap chips. I would personally recommend the Mother Bush Rose wine (dry) or the Obama Mama (sweet and fruity) it would go with any dish you choose. The staff' s service: quick and professional and the prices are pretty reasonable.
Food is delicious; service is attentive and quick as requested (to catch a BAM show) and atmosphere is spacious yet cozy.
We waited 45 minute for a table with a reservation. Then were asked to move to another table so they could fit a large party there that had just gotten there. We moved to a table that was half set missing utensils and glasses. The candle was also out. Food was decent but service was rushed and awkward. They did give us two drinks for waiting but it did not seem to charm us into enjoying the evening. I would not recommend this restaurant.
Four people had four different dishes. The sausage was fine but it was nowhere near as interesting as some of the other dishes. The fish special was really good. The meat and pastry dish was excellent. I never had the lamb chops but was told they were good too. So if you go, get the interesting dishes.
My big complaint is the table we got was very small and four of us barely fit. Second complaint was that it was extremely noisy. Food gets 5 stars, physical set up gets 2 stars.
We ordered almost everything on the menu. The food is very traditional South African and brought back wonderful memories for my husband. Great selection and cooked very well- one of the dishes was even served on a tin plate!
Food Sublime, The lamb, steak, seafood all delish
Atmosphere was tightly packed but it added to the ambiance.
There were some crying babies but those cant be stopped
I had my birthday festivity here and they were so accomodating, friendly and made us feel very welcomed.
Highly reccomend it to all.
I honestly didn't know squid could be anything other than chewy.
Our group of seven had a wonderful dinner at Madiba on Nov. 1, 20014. The dishes were artfully presented and the flavors were to be relished. I especially enjoyed the shrimp entree. Even the rice was outstanding! The flourless chocolate cake delighted one and all! The wait staff was efficient and prompt. Our meal at Madiba was memorable, and all agreed we'd go back soon.
Pass this place many times and decided to have a group birthday celebration here. Best decision ever! Food and drinks were excellent. Service was great. I will visit Madiba Restaurant again and again!
The food particularly makes this a special place to dine.
Madiba has sine of the most delectable South African food I have ever had. Definitely a must if you want big flavor and are in Ft Greene.
Waitress was unfriendly. She warmed up slightly as the night worn on. The wine I had before and had been looking forward to all day was unavailable...she was short telling me it wasn't available and was unwilling to suggest an alternative until coaxed into doing so. Disappointing service although the food was wonderful.
Madiba has an interesting vibe with an eclectic, delicious menu. The decor evokes a South African shanty, with pictures of Mandela and an ingenious chandelier made from coke bottles. We arrived a little early but were seated at our reservation time and waited on immediately. The menu featured dishes from different populations of South Africa. My husband had Indian cuisine: samosas and lamb curry (several styles of curry to choose). I had seafood soup, lamb chops with pap (grits) and spicy baked beans and our daughter (her 3rd time here) started with chicken livers, with a lobster main dish. We loved all the dishes. All the tables were full with some large family groups and many small groups. It was noisy, but in a happy, good way.
