This review reflects our third visit to what was Madiba - we had previously been in spring and summer 2015, but this visit was in October. We had been especially attracted to Madiba because of the South African ambience, biltong, and great selection of SA food and wine. The first sense of something different was when we asked to buy a packet of biltong at the cafe and were told "we don't have that any more". It was then that we noticed that the signs for "Madiba Harlem" had been changed to "Mist Harlem". Our friendly server (who was outstanding) informed us that in July 2015, Madiba changed ownership and is no longer SA-flavored. Indeed, the menu has been transformed to what could be called modern American cuisine, and the SA wines are being "phased out". But what we ordered - spare ribs and salmon - were both absolutely superb, as good if not better than we have had anywhere. The SA Pinotage we ordered from the wine list was no longer available, but our hosts graciously replaced it with a much more expensive (and superb) Pinotage at no extra charge (sorry, I think it was their last bottle!). So, although we are disappointed that this is no longer Madiba Harlem (and this should be reflected on OpenTable), we had an enjoyable and satisfying dining experience and would definitely go back to what is now Mist Harlem!

NOTE: Although the reservation was made for us to dine at "Madiba" the restaurant has changed hands and is not only under new management but is no longer "Madiba" and is now named "MIST". The chef is new, the menu changed, the wait staff not familiar with the dishes, there is no liquor license for spirits. I was disappointed that any and all expectations created by OpenTable that were set by description and menu were not met.................

Much improved (less bitter) olive tapenade with the grilled octopus. Burger was good but portion of fries was overwhelmingly large. Salmon and short rib were perfect. Dessert menu is not very authentic south african so had more of the Pinotage instead. Service was a bit slow even though the restaurant was only 1/3 full on this rainy Thursday evening.

Brunch was excellent and I loved that it wasn't the usual suspects. The Bloody Marys are homemade and fantastic. I got the steak sandwich with fantastic fries and husband got the huevos rancheros which were also great. Our only challenge was for our child who is not a picky eater, but would have been happier with something traditional. We settled on the waffle with warm apples, walnuts, honey and whipped cream. Get the apples on the side because you may want to put it together yourself like our son did! We loved it and can't wait to go again.

If you want to have a delicious meal check out Mist, formerly known as Madiba. It's South African inspired menu caters to your spice palate. Try the curry and the mussels. But don't forget to try the Mozambique prawns which were so well done. For dessert, try the bread pudding. It melts in your mouth and satisfies your sweet tooth. You'll love the friendly service too. Definitely a worth while dining experience!

Pork chop and Burger were really well prepared as was the ice cream sandwiches. The octopus starter was tender but rather small and the olive tapenade/ marinade gave it a rather bitter after taste. Other than that the food was excellent, good wine choice and attentive service! Can't wait to go back.
