Great menu and cocktails plus energetic vibe. The only downside of our meal was our very unprofessional waitress who constantly interrupted the meal and kept asking to clear our plates. She was pregnant, so maybe she just wanted to go home...but her attitude was a detriment to the evening.
The musicians performing in the bar area were spectacular!! What a treat!
Great dinner, although the sodium content must have been high. I got the seared tuna, and my husband got the salmon and we felt the sodium height the rest of the night. The service was great, although we did feel we were being gently moved on after eating. All in all good experience, good food, good service. Next time we will attend a bit more tonhownfood is cooked (high sodium sauces).
The restaurant offers two dining areas. We chose the comfy front porch overlooking the sidewalk activity rather than the garden room in the rear. Though diners are seated close, the arrangement offers privacy for conversation and has comfortable, colorful seating.
The menu includes light fare and heavier entrees, but all are huge portions, so we were glad that we noticed this so that we split an entree and then added a side salad or chowder. Plus, after the awesome bread, we only wanted a smaller portion entree.
We chose a special...seafood over risotto...it was simply divine as was the chowder. Even the side salad was a large portion and excellent...served with a homemade dressing that made it special...choice of creamy or vinaigrette.
We both ordered fancy cocktails (a bit pricey) and somehow my husband found room for one of the six dessert options, apple-blueberry crumble with homemade ice cream. Yum!
Highly recommend Mad Batter, which us also popular for breakfast.
We had a lovely meal the evening we were there. We had dinner on the porch, nose level was acceptable. Food was good, portions we're just right. Wait staff was very attentive without being over bearing. There was a great wine list, you'll be sure to find something on the menu for everyone.
We had previously loved The Mad Batter and had many excellent meals there. We visited Oct 4 to celebrate our 49th Anniversary. My husband had the crab cake and steak entree and I had the featured special, seafood risotto. In the past their lump crab cakes were tasty and full of real lumps of crab meat. This time my husband described his as tasting like 'Mrs. Paul's' just a mash with minimal crab flavor. His steak was appropriately cooked medium, as requested, but flavorless. The "four cheese macaroni and cheese' side that came with his meal had very little cheese sauce or cheese flavor. My seafood risotto tasted like someone overcooked some white rice and stirred in a few peas, some overcooked spinach and yesterday's shrimp , scallops, and leftover bits of lobster and crab. I had noted that we were celebrating our anniversary when making the reservation, however, neither the hostess nor our server seemed to be aware of this. Both seemed very impersonal and that they could care less whether we were there or not. We will not be returning!
I had a seafood risotto special which was quite good. Wife had ravioli with shrimp and scallops in a tomato cream sauce. She enjoyed that as well as her crab bisque. Service was good despite seeing only a single waiter in the back room. Nice dinner.
My husband and I went to dinner here because of the vegan and vegetarian choices on the menu. My husband's meal was good but mine was not great, and we paid a lot for a not great meal. The entree was 29.00, was very small, and of questionable contents. I might have made a bad choice in ordering the Vegan Wellington, but was not expecting what I got. It was obviously something that was not made fresh on premises.
My sister and I went past Mad Batter when we were looking for our hotel !!! We said look at the line there it must really be good ... so we mad a reservation for dinner. We liked everything about it, really enjoyed sitting on the front porch... service was great very friendly !! Food was very good !
Lots of attitude from the hostess, and little to no eye contact from the waitress. Fortunately, the food was excellent. Not sure I’d put up with that a second time, given the price point we paid.
Really enjoy coming here. The food and service are always very good. Our kids are Vegan and Gluten free and still have a good amount of options. We always look forward to our next dining experience here.
We were visiting Cape May, NJ for the first time and wanted to go to local eateries instead of hitting any chain places. We saw this restaurant on the guided tour we were taking and thought we would give it a try. Very glad we did. Everything was delicious. We started with the Cheesesteak Eggrolls, wonderful, but make sure you give them a few minutes to cool down, you will burn your mouth! My husband got the seafood bisque, and although I'm not a seafood eater, I tried a taste, it was wonderful! I had the paella; wow, it was fantastic. My husband had the crab cake sandwich...it was okay, but probably wouldn't get it again. All in all, it was a great dinner. I would absolutely recommend this to Cape May first timers or anyone who visits there on a regular basis. Not bad in terms of cost, fast and friendly service and good food.
Food is good esp clam chowder, apple feta salad, Chilean sea bass, crab cakes. Service was lackluster. Ambiance in the back room is bland. The bar area is nicer but there are only high tables in there. It used to be a special experience to go there but not anymore.
Great night live music great drinks and food. Carol was a great add to the night. She was efficient and did not rush us - from appetizers mussels, calamari and filet mignonette and the seafood risotto was outstanding.
Absolutely wonderful, delicious menu choices, and impeccable service in a business casual, charming atmosphere. Best meal we had in Cape May among many other greats!
Disappointed with overall experience ...............//
Red snapper was over cooked and dry. Did not eat much of a generous portion. Had to pick around nerves to eat the tuna. Waitress never returned to ask how the meal was until dinner was over. Thankfully they did not charge for the red snapper dinner.
The sandwiches were great but the french fries not so good
Love this restaurant for breakfast and dinner. The pancakes are the best. For dinner the sea bass entrée and the scallop entrée are delicious. We love coming here.
Everything was great! The food was delicious and they give you a large portion.
The food was exceptional. Also very unique. Nice place for a date but not romantic
Meal was delicious. Everyone was friendly and accommodating . Nice relaxing setting on the porch.
Food came out cold. My husbands was warm.
Waiter disappeared and we had to sit there for a while.
Average bland food.
My husband, daughter and I enjoyed great martini's during happy hour at the bar and a wonderful meal in the terrace restaurant. Service was great, our meal was delicious. They have great vegetarian options. We had the hummus plate and a burrata salad split between three people as an appetizer and were almost full from that. Unfortunately, no room for dessert! We were celebrating an anniversary and it was a very memorable night. Enjoyed the art work on the premises as well. We will definitely be back!
Main entrees were fair to good, but definitely not worth the money. Side dish was inedible. Service was lacking and ambience was pretty much the same.
Food was good, not exceptional. Ambiance was more casual than we anticipated. Great for a casual dinner. Gluten free items not listed on the menu and must ask for special menu.
My wife and I had an enjoyable dinner. Our original table area was feeling a bit cold and we asked for another table. My wife had to go to the host at the front of the Mad Batter to have him change the table as the server said she could not do it. We were given another table and the ambiance and temp was very nice.
The food we ordered was presented in a timely fashion and was hot and tasty.
All in all, a very nice experience.
We regularly have eaten at MB on our annual trip to the shore. We loved the open front porch and were very sorry to see that they have enclosed it (a major loss). We decided to take a table in the rear garden room, since we were already there with reservations. The food is still good, the waiter was average. I was not happy to find out that the happy hour prices (1/2 off drinks) only apply in the bar, not that back room. I was even more unhappy when asking for another basket of rolls, I was told they would be .75 each. IMHO at these prices, charging for a couple of rolls seems silly. Because of these changes, I will find another Cape May site to dine on my annual visit.
We came to hear the live music (Patty Blee) and have a friends get together. The daily salad was very crisp and flavorful. Halibut was the daily fish, and was recommended by our server as being fresh. It was the winning dish! My friends enjoyed and recommend the shrimp and scallop sauté over ravioli, and the pan seared red snapper with two fried shrimp. The fried shrimp were not as well prepared as the rest of the dish.
We ate on the porch and could still hear the music from the bar area and chat.
Nice little find in Cape May good food and good service.
Terrible dinner. Scallops were extremely chewy. I may go back and try breakfast but I’ll never go there for dinner again.
I made the reservation on Open Table, stated that it was for my daughter's birthday. Host had no clue and waitress had no clue.
If this was my first visit, I'd never return. However, this is one of my favorite restaurants in Cape May. Not only was I disappointed, but so were 2 others in my party. Our meals took about 30 minutes to be served after our appetizers were eaten. All of our meals were COLD! Two of us had the filet and crab cake. The steaks were great but the 4 cheese macaroni, asparagus, and crab cakes were cold. My husband had the skirt steak entree with loaded French fries. He sent it back to be reheated. It was re-served with fresh fries but the steak was terrible. It will be quite a while before we return.
September in Cape May and didn't need reservation for 6:30 dinner. By time we left, packed. Music started at 7. Server Laura attentive. I ordered cup of soup and the appetizer mussels for dinner. There were 24 mussels in the appetizer portion, almost more than I would eat. Broth was very tasty.
What a wonderful vibe and place! Staff very friendly and food was amazing. Wine, appetizers, entrees and dessert were all fantastic. Had the loaded fries and seafood risotto. Would definitely recommend to all!
way too loud chaotic didn't get to say that in above options but you made me chose something!- food quality Horrible!! I have a gluten allergy and nachos were stale- with small amor of liquid cheese, tasteless, my husband had a veg dish that was horrible and I had a seafood risotto with no taste and little rice component- very expensive and waitress didn't ask us why I didn't eat anything! Don't go here if you enjoy good food and conversation with a partner of any sort!
It is simply amazing! you must go when in Cape May!! I’m never disappointed!!💖
Mad Batter never disappoints!! Their crab cakes are by far the greatest in all of Cape May! I ordered the salmon and every bite was better than the other. My husband ordered the filet mignon and it was simply amazing!
We eat here every time we come to Cape May.
Our server seemed uninterested. The food is always good.
We received a warm greeting when we arrived. The hosts were very friendly and personable.
We both had the crabcakes with mac and cheese and asparagus. It was delicious!
Will definitely visit again when in Cape May!
