Mad Batter Restaurant
My husband and I were staying in cape may for the night, on 2/16, and had chosen the Mad Batter for dinner because there were very few places open this Valentine’s Day weekend. We didn’t plan on a quiet, romantic meal, so we weren’t put off by the crowd of diners waiting to be seated at 8 pm, the time of our reservation. The group, squeezed together in the waiting area by the door, was cheerfully and politely standing shoulder to shoulder. The host, a young man working the desk solo, appeared overworked, frazzled, quickly telling each group that he would seat them as soon as possible. He meant well, but somehow didn’t notice that no one was upset. When our name was called, just 5 minutes later, the host said “follow me”; however he literally RAN through the crowd in the bar, took a left, down some stairs, and turned right, so fast that there was no way we could stay within 10 feet of him. We smiled at each other and wondered how he expected us to keep up with him.
Our service was prompt and polite. The noise level was so high that any extra niceties went by the wayside though. We could hardly hear our server over the noise of the next table, a lively party of 12. The food was good: tossed apple salad, and a crab cake for me, and a chicken and sausage paella for my husband. We shared a nice piece of strawberry cheesecake and a few glasses of wine. All in all a fine dinner, but not our first choice for a romantic meal. The atmosphere is great for breakfast and lunch, or a group.
The bar seemed to be a good spot to listen to the live entertainment. A group playing 60’s and 70’s hits was a crowd pleaser.
First time dining here. Not what I expected given everything I've heard. For was average; Seafood Risotto was full of seafood but the Risotto was subpar.
Good service, solid food but not a lot of choices. Good if you prefer vegan.
My husband and I enjoyed a great dinner at the Mad Batter. My filet mignon was delicious. My husband loved the fried oysters. The service was great. We went back the next day for breakfast.
Food was a problem as 1 diner was not given the right item ordered and one got a well done steak instead of medium rare. They did give us 50% of one meal but of course our evening was ruined.
Good food at a moderate price. Big vegetarian and vegan selections, which is great for those who prefer that (I don't).
Thoroughly enjoyed both dinner and breakfast. Dinner Cocktail was excellent as was the food. Crab Benedict great!!
I was pleased to see that the Mad Batter remodeled and updated their sign and their colors inside. It was a nice fresh change.
The food is always good here, the one thing I always forget it to ask NOT to have the sauce with my filet. I am more of a purest and personally do not like the sauce. The crab cake is amazing and of course the Shrimp Bisque is one of the best around.
A must visit if you are in Cape May. It is winter now so the porch is closed, but when the weather gets nice, I always look forward to dining with the walls open.
This place is consistently a memorable experience.
Food was not as good tonight. Crab cakes were more dough and filler than crab.
A fun place with lots of good music! Great breakfast menu.
Food and service was fantastic. Great atmosphere.
I will give it another try because I think they got slammed just before our reservation. Needed more servers on the front porch. 30 minutes to get a glass of wine. The bus person did a great job.
Loved the ambiance and energy. I thought our table was in the way of servers. Also crab cakes didn’t live up to expectation. Too much sauce on top. Brie app was to die for. Took forever to get water refilled at table. Overall nice place
We had a wonderful time. The food and drinks were delicious and the staff was friendly. The music was also great. We will definitely be going back...get the Bayberry wings...they were amazing!
We loved the food, service and the vibe so much, we returned for lunch and dinner the next day! We NEVER do that! The best part is we were not disappointed, each meal was truly great! And the service and staff were super efficient and friendly. Great place!
Music is always a plus! Food and service was fabulous. The place was hopping!
The hostess was friendly and seated us very quickly! Food was good and we were served pretty quickly. We will go back!
We had a 6:30 reservation. At 6:45 we were told we could sit in bar area or wait another 15 minutes for table. We sat in bar area. Very very loud , we could talk to other people at our table. Then a musician started. Food was very good but not the night we were expecting.
Great food selections, great service and great atmosphere. Music in the bar area was quite nice. Cozy fireplace in the main dining room and the décor make this place special. Don't forget to order a Manmosa!
One of our favorites in Cape May. Consistent food and friendly service. Wonderful ambiance. This visit I had the grilled salmon off the menu. Comes with lobster salad and sweet mashed. Delicious! My daughters are always happy with the children's petite filet. Comes with fries and veggie of day. Cooked exactly how we asked. We passed on desert but know from past experience they always have something yummy for everyone! Mad Batter is great for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Crab cake sandwich is a must try!
We have dined at the Mad batter many times in past, for both breakfast & dinner. This was our 1st time there for New Year's Eve & , once again, it did not fail to disappoint! The fixed-price menu was great with a variety of options to choose from. Service was exceptional, as usual. The entertainment...live music with a guitarist/singer/harmonica-player...was fantastic. My husband & I had a fun time & would definitely return!!!
We arrived for an early New Years Eve dinner which was listed on the menu as a 4 course fixed price meal. We were not very hungry, so they let us split one meal- which gave us just the right amount of food with no leftovers. The price was reasonable for NYE and the food was excellent. Highly recommend.
My filet was overdone, mashed potatoes and asparagus lukewarm. After sending it back, steak was cooked properly but veggies still not hot.
Usual restaurant etiquette called for comp dessert or drink, but none offered.
I’d eaten at Mad Batter before and was satisfied. New Year’s Eve fixed price meal was disappointing.
We went for their NYE Special. Prefix 4 course menu. One price. Service was great and no rush to finish your meal. We were there close to 2 hours.
Food was over cooked. We normally love coming here but this wasn’t our best meal there. Steak over cooked and shrimp hard and chewy.
Very disappointed with the quality of the food - not what I remembered from my previous visits. The shrimp/scallop/ravioli meal was a joke - the waitress - Sue - told me there were 6 of each - my bowl contained 3 of each - very disappointing - especially for the price. My girlfriends twin filet meal was sub-standard. She said the filets tasted more like a bad strip steak so I tried it - if it was filet it was the worst I’ve ever had - and I’ve had many filets over the years. I won’t be coming back - there are plenty of other great restaurants in Cape May to patronize. You need to elevate your quality of food and level of service. p.s - the glass of cab I ordered tasted like a weak Pinot. Mis Pour?
Food and service was great!
Love the live music and art! Food is delish and the bartenders are amazing!
I love this place. I eat there every time I’m in Cape May.
The filet mignon I had was the best I've ever had!
The service and food was excellent at the Mad Batter! I definitely would recommend it for fun night out!
For the price it’s just meh. The ambiance is a choice between bar like or a bright colored diner-like front area.
Carol is awesome! And we were early for our reservation and technically, the kitchen wasn’t even open yet, but we were seated and made to feel very welcome. The food is always super fresh and delicious! Service, incredible!!
I was so looking forward considering all the positive reviews. We had a 7 reservation and showed up early. The music in the back bar had that room pretty crowded, where you could also eat, crammed next to other patrons. I asked if we could be seated early, the middle aged woman who had "greeted" us seemed disinterested in our arrival and told us we could wait at the bar, even though there was 2 of us, and PLENTY of open seating in the main, quiet, more relaxed dining area. We waited for 45 minutes, decided we may as well order food because that was the first time anyone came over to us (I got up to get our drinks at the bar) and then I decided to go up front to ask again. Same tables were open up front, and the nice young gentleman said we could surely be seated right away, and then that same woman came out and seemed ANGRY that he had done that. RIDICULOUS. Food was mediocre, some service was fine except for the "manager" I assume. If that's the reception I receive in WINTER at a SEASDE town well then there are vending machines that have better service. General waitstaff was pleasant if spotty. NOT WORTH THE ATTITUDE, and I'm from NEW YORK, where apparently we specialize in attitude.
Compliments to the chef. The steak and cake was excellent. Lots of flavors exploding in your mouth. Also was pleasantly suprised how nice and warm it was dining on the porch in the winter
Mediocre food at a ridiculous price. It was so loud I nearly strained my voice trying to carry on a conversation across the table. After reading all the reviews I never thought we’d have such a terrible experience. We were very disappointed.
Never disappoints! Server great, host, Kay, always welcoming. Whether stopping in for a drink, dinner or just a dessert, Mad Batter always a sure thing.
I erroneously forgot my own reservation time showing up 40
late! The Host & Hostess were gracious and accommodating seating up within minutes! Been going to Mad Batter for brunch for 20+years, Ist time for dinner in ages, very pleased!
I enjoyed my gluten free ravioli and scallops. Our server was knowledgable and answered any questions I had.
