Home cooking, Afghan style. My friend and I each had the kebabs, which were very interestingly spiced, but a look around revealed many dishes of more interest perhaps, which I'll try next time. A lot of 'native' customers, so I suppose that speaks to the authenticity of the cuisine. Service is by the man I took to be the proprietor, and it's efficient but not elegant. Bring your own bottle if you want wine or beer. I plan to go again.

Met the owner who made us a dish not on his menu. I had this dish before at Steve Jobs biological father’s restaurant in Sunny Vale CA call kaddo bourani which is a savory pumpkin on ground beef topped with yogurt sauce. He’d never made it before and made it with out the added sugar in the typical calling as he used pumpkin for regular kaddo. Not bad and not what I’d had before. But a nice jester anyway. He’d didn’t charge us for the one-off dish, but I did gobble it up.
I visited this establishment for the second time. The first look of this place is a dim and dated restaurant on the east side which looks fairly Mediterranean. the décor is a reminiscence of a bygone era in a different world which is a start contrast to New York. The host is this fine gentleman who is very polite and kind which leaves us guessing if this place has passed its prime or they don't really care for any updates and are more concerned with the real thing ( food).
I ordered the sambosa along with the chicken korma and also the marinated lamb chops (yes I have an appetite!!). The sambosa was amazing with just the right balance. While the taste was bang on the buck and comparable to my experiences elsewhere, the fact that it wasn't oily and juicy left me positively surprised. The lamb chops were a bit dry for my liking and a mildly spicy onion gravy on the side with the dish will be great addition. But what got me back to this establishment was the chicken korma. This is not a fancy dine in experience, but the chicken korma reminded me of the real thing I used to have back at home made by my grandmother. Its comfort food and hits the spot. Lack of drink options (non alcoholic ones as well like the jalaab) leave room for some improvement but the place does justice to what it serves.
This is a place to sit with a friend and have a comfort food or dine with a nice book.

Yum, yum, yum. Food is delicious especially the lamb with pistachios and orange peel, and the beef or lamb kefka. They don't serve alcohol but will allow you to bring wine at no charge which for me is a plus. Service is attentive without being obtrusive and the ambiance is more than adequate. What a gem of the upper east side.

I would not dine here again. The kitchen workers used bare hands and were sweating. Their clothes were soiled and I could see the flesh of their stomach. Then the food was not as good as I would have hoped. The chicken seemed microwaved instead of prepared fresh.
Great Middle Eastern food almost like a fusion of Turkish and Indian. Comfortable space and service nothing fancy but adequate. Combination Kabob was excellent. Basic salad was disappointing- like plain diner offering- iceberg, cucumbers, tasteless tomatoes. Eggplant side was excellent. Will be back often for everyday great value food.
The food here was delicious and our server, who I believe is also the co-owner, was very helpful and attentive. They do not serve alcohol here but you're encouraged to visit the wine shop next door to pick up a bottle.

Have lived in neighborhood for years and never been..have passed by it a million times. So glad we went in on Saturday night. The owner does all the work and he was lovely. Food was delicious, hot and great portions. We will return!
This is a favorite in our neighborhood (UES). The food is outstanding & the warmth of the owner makes our experience all the better. BYOB keeps the prices down & it's the first place we think of when friends & family come in for dinner.
Very tasty. What is better than a delicious lamb kebab and rice with delicious spicy sauces? Really good. The scallion dumplings topped with yogurt and beef were delicious. Very different. This place is bring your own beer or wine. There is Whiskey and Wine on 69 one block down 2nd Ave. I really enjoyed this place and I will most definitely go back. Strange, I've passed it for years and never went in, but always wanted to and glad I did.

Most excellent Afghan food. As you enter the door, the aroma sets the tone. We had reserved a table and were thankful since it was PACKED. It was my birthday and we were given the best table in the front window. While my husband ran next door for a bottle of red wine, I ordered out appetizers. What a great start. The entrees were generous and excellent (I can't use that word too much). We were stuffed and passed on desert, but a piece of chocolate cake was brought out and everyone sang happy birthday. Wonderful evening

One of our favorites restaurants. Great place to introduce a new cuisine to friends. Very friendly and accommodating owner/head waiter. Small, intimate (the restaurant, not the owner). Afghan food is a variety of more familiar Middle Eastern food. Great kabobs, lots of lamb, wonderful appetizers. Bring your own beer or wine (corkage, glasses free). Highly recommended.
The food was excellent. The server was friendly, although clearly overwhelmed as his dining room help had a family emergency and had to leave early. Even though the server was working alone, he was still friendly and made excellent recommendations for us.
what a great find! my chicken shish-kebab was the best I've ever eaten - mainly because the chicken itself was of such high quality - moist and tender. Most interesting (and yummy) pumpkin dumplings to start. Winos, be advised, bring your own bottle, as they do not serve alcohol. I"ll be back!
The food has always been wonderful - I've been going to AKH for over 20 years. But the place is looking pretty tired. Given how inexpensive the food is, I'm not too surprised if they can't afford to fix it up. I hope once the subway is finished, they will do a major re-do.
The BYOB policy is really nice - not too many of those around anymore.

Yes, the Kabab House is located in the midst of the 2nd Avenue Subway construction zone, but the interior design assumes that the lovely carpet hangings will hide the shabby and run down feeling with a restaurant in need of a paint job and a new HVAC system --- just look at the make-shift a/c ducts on the ceiling. But service was friendly (a bit slow), and the portions tasty and plentiful.

This restaurant has an intimate and authentic ambiance. The dishes we tried were all prepared in a manner that allowed the delicious flavors of the ingredients to come through cleanly. We had a delightful meal.
Friends from Canada were in to watch their son run the marathon and we chose Afghan Kebab House mainly due to its proximity to where they were staying. What a treat the food was very good and we were able to have a normal conversation as the noise level was quite low. We started with the combination appetizer plate, which was a choice of any 4 appetizers, all conveniently cut into 4 pieces! Very good!! Salad was ordinary, but included in the dinner, so appreciated. We had the tandoori chicken kebabs, lamb kebabs, tandoori shrimp and tandoori fish. All were extremely tasty. The rice served with the meals was outstanding! The green sauce is to die for - a must try. I did not try the brown sauce, which is apparently quite spicy, but others did and said it too was great. BYOB and no corkage charge is another plus. We were served by the owner, who is very hospitable - as I think he also is the cook, service was a bit slow. But meals arrived hot and well prepared. I would highly recommend this restaurant for a casual, interesting meal.
We visited the Afghan Kebab House as we saw the menu online and figured there was enough on it for all our four kids to eat. I wasn't expecting much when I saw the outside of the place but we gradually fell in love with the restaurant as the dinner progressed. The food was really good, all the kids found something they liked to eat (always a miracle!), and the atmosphere was low-key but friendly. Its not the fastest service but speed was not what we needed so it didn't matter. And the owner was so kind and attentive that it made the evening seem special. We will definitely visit again and highly recommend it for families.
Somehow, I stumbled upon The Afghan Kebab house & it has been a favorite ever since. It's a BYOB so that softens the financial blow of dining out all the time. The food is as close to feeling like it's literally home cooked. The people are warm & its cave-like ambiance is just really cool!

Small, ten table restaurant with some of the most solid food, insanely delicious sauces, and unique ambiance. Total gem.
I arrived for a dinner, and I was happy to see how nice the place looked! Not a lot of diners the night I went, however the food was amazing, and the staff were super friendly. I will definitely be back!
