About Macon Bistro & Larder
Macon Bistro & Larder is a locally owned neighborhood restaurant serving re-invented bistro cuisine in a warm, friendly atmosphere. Tony Brown, inspired by his southern roots and his world travels, brings together the cooking styles of Macon, Georgia, and Macon, France, to create classically delicious dishes - all served with a side of southern hospitality.
We have recently opened The Magnolia Room at Macon to accommodate more diners during dinner time. The Magnolia Room at Macon is located down the hall from Macon in the Chevy Chase Arcade on the left hand side and affords guests a more intimate and spacious dining experience. Depending on volume during peak dining times, your reservation may be seated in The Magnolia Room, which affords the same great food with the same great service. If you would like to request to either sit in Magnolia or to not sit in Magnolia, please do so in your reservation notes when you make your reservation

In April 2016, we opened The Magnolia Room at Macon to accommodate private parties and to expand our current restaurant. We have the ability to seat up to 50 people for a Brunch, Lunch, or Dinner event and we can accommodate anywhere from 70-80 standing for a cocktail or mix and mingle event.

The lobster starter was quite spicy with no warning on the menu description. I told my sister and she said my brother in law had the same experience on a previous visit. Hot sauce should be a choice not a surprise. I am not supposed to eat it as per docs orders! Otherwise delicious!
This is a sweet little bistro with an interesting menu and a cozy atmosphere. The featured deviled eggs were unusual and delicious with a smoked paper jelly garnish. My main of short ribs was rich and perfectly cooked. Grits with tons of butter added more richness. Guest main of steak was cooked properly and tasty but arrived room temperature. My other guest had a burger that was delicious with a slab of pork belly but so enormous it was hard to eat - impossible to hold and get a bite. We all enjoyed this restaurant and will return. It is a little noisy - we were there on a weeknight so the volume was fine but Ive been on a busy night and it is a bit hard to hear.
I've been to Macon Bistro several times now and have always had a delicious meal. The portions are right-sized and the food is exceptional. The menu is seasonally adjusted and always seems perfect for the time of year. The cocktail menu is also varied and interesting. It's a little pricey but well worth it. The noise level can be high when the restaurant is full, especially because the tables are so close together (which is my only criticism), so I wouldn't recommend it if you want a romantic dinner for two.
Food was excellent. Lobster and grits is a standout. Do not let yourself be seated in the rear of the main dining room by the kitchen service area. Orders to the obviously talented and hardworking cooks are shouted "drill Sargent style" making for a noisy and distracting dining experience.
We were lured in by the dc champagne week special of champagne and fried chicken (at the bar only) which it turned out is offered every week at Macon, but it was definitely worth it. Lovely champagne, and delicious drumsticks, collards and Brussels sprouts. And great service.
Ordered from the prix fix menu. French onion soup was delicious, risotto ended up be squash instead of mushroom (good, a little bland, but was looking forward to mushroom) chocolate chip cookie with bourbon milk was fabulous. Servers, there were multiple, were very pleasant and efficient and we did not feel rushed.
We came before and enjoyed it but they changed the preparations for the chicken and waffle. We were not expecting tabasco sauce on our waffle. Had to send it back especially since one was a child. The menu was not reflective of the actual preparations of several dishes. Be sure to ask about preparations.
We truly love Macon Bistro. AJ, the general manager, is more than terrific and the wait staff bends over backwards for everyone. The Magnolia Room is a special delight for pre-dinner cocktails and post-dinner drinks. Having spirits from local distilleries is a special treat. Super on all counts. The food is amazing from start to finish.
Macon is all about the food preparation, with an emphasis on sauces. Our party of 4 ordered 3 different entrees, 1 salad, and 1 soup. All were excellent, worth the price. The setting was comfortable, slightly quaint. Quiet enough for conversation, and we did not feel rushed. The melding of southern and French cuisine created the odd situation of being offered a biscuit for a bouillabaisse; consider bringing a baguette from a nearby bakery!
this restaurant came very highly recommended. we arrived at our 7:30 reservation time but got no service for over half an hour. the charcuterie board was very good. the onion soup was very tasty but was not hot. the fish stew was not hot and went back. the mushroom risotto replacement was not hot and neither was that replacement. to their credit they did not charge me for the risotto. the burger was quite good.
i doubt that i would return
Overall, I enjoy this restaurant. Across my visits the service has always been friendly, but inconsistent and forgetful. I feel the appetizers are overpriced ($13 for a very small market salad; $12 for a very small onion soup, which is over seasoned). The entrees are well priced, and the location is great if going to a movie at The Avalon.
We went at 5:30 to beat the dinner crowd and found it was wonderfully quiet and service was attentive. Love the quality of the food and the ambiance of this restaurant. Strongly recommend the 3-course pretheater menu for those able to visit during this time frame-- it's a good value. Otherwise, the a la carte items on this menu seem high priced for a bistro, definitely meant for Chevy Chase wallets.
Found this on-line when looking for after theater dining following a movie at The Avalon. Perfect! Excellent menu and service, fun environment. We sat at the bar and had a good time watching bartender craft his cocktails. I liked so many items on the menu, it was hard to narrow down. I like healthy...while my husband eats with complete abandon. We both easily found items for our tastes. Will definitely go back....and recommend to others.
The restaurant had a nice ambience and clearly was popular given that all the tables were filled. But I thought the menu did not have that many things on it that I would like and it was pretty expensive. I got a house salad which I thought was very so so. It said that it had blue cheese in it and there was like a dime-sized morsel of blue cheese. The glasses of wine started at $12 which I think really is way overpriced. The main dish of salmon was pretty good but again the whole meal seemed overpriced and I was underwhelmed
I am clearly a minority voice, but I do not like this restaurant. We tried it when it first opened and were not impressed; the service was terrible, the tables were too close together, the noise was deafening, and it was so dark. The food was as unappetizing as anything I’ve ever hated. We agreed we would not go back. Time passed and we decided to give Macon another try. While the lighting has improved, as has the service (it's quite good—the staff is attentive, knowledgeable and friendly), the tables are cramped and the seating very uncomfortable. And the food, well, each to his own. I’m not a fan of collards and the restaurant reeked of them. The chicken was fatty (in fact, all the food is fatty and greasy), the onion soup just ok, and it seemed that every dish was infused with tarragon. There was 1 salad choice, a very busy assortment of whatever was in the kitchen, and various other non-vegetable dishes. I’m glad a local eatery is garnering rave reviews, but not from me. Collard lovers, enjoy!
We will definitely go back. The beef cheeks were to die for. I didn't finish them because it was a pretty hefty portion and they were pretty rich, and I wanted to leave room for dessert. Husband got bouillabasse. Less broth than other places we've had it so the broth didn't really permeate the seafood as much as he'd expected. Without asking, the waiter brought more broth and that was a nice gesture. It also didn't come with the traditional grilled bread to sop up the broth, so we ordered more biscuits for that purpose. Though others have raved about the biscuits, we thought they were just ok, and pretty small. Desserts were disappointing. The coconut cake was a tiny bit stale (this was a Monday night) and the fig and gingerbread cake had pieces of fig scattered around small pieces of gingerbread. I thought the cake would have pieces of fig in it. Thought the desserts were overpriced for what they were. On a Mon. night, we were practically the only diners but, with the tables so close together, I'd imagine it's noisy inside when full. But like I said, we still would go back!
Unfortunately the restaurant seemed understaffed. My food was good but entree was lukewarm like it had been sitting a bit. Had to ask food runner for water refills because waiter was distracted most of the time. My friend and I both ordered dessert; his came but mine never did. When I finally got the waiter's attention to tell him, his reaction was more frustrated than apologetic. At one point, the hostess was taking orders at the tables. I really think they were short-staffed the night I went. It was very busy that night (Sat night). But food was good so it was probably just an off-night for service.
