This is one of our favorite special occasion restaurants. We did not know it was DC restaurant week when we booked. And it was scant choices on both the Restaurant Week menu and their regular menu.
It was a paltry meal. Nothing special at all about any of the choices. The same old same old formulaic offerings as at any other restaurant: short rib, salmon, chicken, veggie risotto. So why go there if the menu is the same as everywhere else. It is said when the best thing you had was the opening cocktail! It is even worse when this happens at one of your formerly favorite places.
The risotto - which was ordered by 4 of our party of 5 - was terrible. Boiled white rice with what seemed like very few previously frozen cubes of vegetables. It did not seem to be cooked the way risotto should be cooked, slowly and with white wine. The server was excellent and perhaps we should have sent the dishes back and ordered something more in keeping with the strengths of the restaurant.
Terrible food last time we were there. Risotto not made with risotto rice and bathed in glop. Service mediocre. And very loud table next to us. Used to be much better.
Overall is great place for brunch. You can talk to friends, and feel the ambient from the street.
Lots of small plates to indulge your appetite.
Birthday for my brother. The fried okra was delicious and was the coconut cake.
We had a girls dinner and all ordered from the snacks menu and small plates. Delish, although I didn’t love the crab dip.
Christmas Eve dinner was delightful!
Everyone was really nice and the food was great. The Brussel sprouts are amazing.
Another excellent experience. Great wine and food with superb service. This is a dependable (but not cheap) place.
Love this charming neighborhood restaurant that has fresh delicious Southern cooking. Fave are the homey butter and biscuits and the fried okra.
Macon B&L is a great find - terrific service, wonderful atmosphere, and good food. Definitely a good spot for a mellow brunch. My only complaint is that the biscuits were not flaky enough.
I made a reservation that I had to change 3 times and they were accommodating and gracious.
Great neighborhood spot and our favorite before / after movies at the Avalon. The food (think Macon, GA not French) is quite good and the service is always attentive and helpful!
Food is so good! Unfortunately, service was initially very bad--being ignored upon entrance to the restaurant, treated rudely when trying to order drinks, etc. This may have been because they were short on a server or something, because once our actual server (the one who took care of us for the rest of the night) came into the picture, everything was fantastic. She was prompt, courteous and helpful. I just love the food here. So flavorful and prepared with care. I think we just had one odd little anomaly with the service at first, because I've been here before and never had a problem.
Food too salty. Three out of four of us couldn’t get enough water for hours after. Our server was beyond perfect (if it’s possible to be better than perfect) and atmosphere is great. Lively not loud
A wonderful blend of French and American Souther Gothic-nice, very nice!
A Great find, and the best brunch in uptown, Washington DC -- perfect for after the Avalon Theatre! And I was a raised by a southern Mom, so I can attest that the food is genuine -- down to the fried okra, and extra thick bacon -- Yum!!/ Biscuits were excellent -- could be EVEN better. I'll be back, again and again.
Our server would disappear for a long time, we had to get someone to find her so we could place our order after waiting 20 minutes, and then throughout the meal she never came to check on us...
Very comfortable, great service, deviled eggs and fried green tomatoes delish! Only suggestion: skin on brick chicken needs to be crispier- but flavor was great! Oh- brussel sprouts outstanding!
Always a great place to meet friends. Food is always great! Menu changes seasonally. Great cocktails.
Great food. Pleasure to eat at a restaurant where you can speak with your fellow diners! Thank you for that.
Wonderful experience. Personable and attentive staff. Most importantly the food is fantastic.
We have been here many times and they never disappoint. Even with the seasonally changing menus, the food is always great.
place is nice and service was fine but food was not very good.
Outstanding service, amazing food, will return again.
I love this neighborhood gem. Wonderful atmosphere, cocktails, and menu
Had a phenomenal time. Food was terrific and so was the service.
My wife and I enjoyed a terrific late dinner at Macon Bistro on Saturday night. Having just returned from a plane trip across the country, we were in need of good food and drink. We found both. We both ordered the delicious burrata and tomato salad. I followed with the lamb chop entree, while my wife opted for a lighter second course of Macon's shrimp and grits. Both were excellent.
We love Macon! Amazing fresh food in a friendly, neighborhood spot. A real gem!
The food was great as always, and the service could not have been better. Thanks!
Had Sunday lunch with my family. The food was excellent as always!
Three of us ate in the Magnolia Room on Saturday night. We had a great dinner, with terrific service.
Great food and service as always! We've been coming here since the beginning.
Really love the ambience; the food so-so. Oh we'll be back because of location, but next time, we'll just sit at the bar and maybe have a biscuit or something for food, since there's not much choice in true apps. The menu needs work, honestly. If it's a brasserie? Then please add more appealing sides like fresh geens and better vegetable sides, and work on what it looks like on the plate. If southern? Shrimp and sausage dishes, fried chicken, creamy grits, corn anything are the wheelhouse. The chopped okra belongs in gumbo. (Whole makes much better presentation.) FInally, we were jammed into a two top and the seating people were... unwelcoming? We had such a great first impression a month or so ago at the bar, but the evening restaurant experience was sub par. A shame, because we're rooting for this neighborhood joint!
The chicken entrée was very overcooked. A big disappointment.
Delicious as always!
Very good experience
I live in the neighborhood and visit Macon on a regular basis. I like the restaurant because the food is consistently good and the ambience is pleasant especially if you’re dining with someone and don’t want to be in a space that is too loud to hear a conversation.
The menu is not expansive but I would rather have a list of a few menu items and know that what I’m eating is creative and well-prepared rather than a large menu of mediocre selections.
This last visit was with a friend of mine and I to have brunch. We both selected the chicken and waffle and were pleased with our choice. The chicken was boneless, well seasoned and tender and the waffle was fluffy and also tasty. I will now make it a point to visit Macon for brunch as well as dinner.
We had a nice brunch. Food and service were very good.
Terrible experience. Waiter could not have been less attentive, despite what appeared to be a surplus of staff. The food was absolutely laughable for what you expect. Not sure what was going on but it took about 45 minutes to order our entree.
