About this restaurant

Named after Henry Mackenzie, noted lawyer and author who lived in the cottage adjacent to what is now Mackenzies Restaurant, this Edinburgh eatery is as much a local institution as the man himself.  Oozing true Caledonian style, Mackenzies prides itself on serving traditional Scottish food in a warm, inviting atmosphere.  Set in a beautiful old cottage, beamed and white washed, Mackenzies is at its romantic best in the evenings when candles are lit to give that intimate atmosphere that dinner á deux demands.  Anybody who views Scottish food as simple and rustic will be in for a surprise – the Mackenzies kitchen is among those pioneering a more refined, contemporary cuisine North of the border.  Menus change seasonally to reflect the very best of local produce.

    Had forgotten about this gem of a restaurant. Lunch deal was 11.95 & choice was more than acceptable even for a fussy eater like me who is almost Vegetarian. Good choice of wines too. So full we had a three way share of a ban of fee dessert. Service was attentive with right amount of time between courses. Will certainly go back

    Dined here for the first time last week for evening meal. There was four of us dining. Ambience was great, food excellant with great choice. Food was delivered hot and very well presented. We were locked after so well and although the last to leave did not feel pressurised at all to leave. Would definitely recommend this restaurant

    Having been delighted with service and food at a special birthday in October, my wife and I returned to McKenzies for dinner last Saturday. The service was excellent and the only slight disappointment was that the salmon that my wife chose was a bit dry. Having said that, she only mentioned it after we were home so it was not a real complaint. We will certainly return to what is now one of our favourite restaurants.

    We booked three days before and got a table. Just as well as otherwise we would have missed a great meal. The service was first class and the food was just what we wanted for a Christmas meal. There was no hurry to finish. We took 2 hours and had it not been for having to go elsewhere, we could have stayed much longer. The restaurant was very busy but after an hour it was quieter. We enjoyed overhearing a table of golfers who enjoyed themselves in a fun way.

    The food was excellent and I was struggling to decide what to have for every course. The only let down was the boring vegetables. Boiled carrots and green beans were a let down compared to the otherwise delicious meal.

    Mature waiter did not make us feel welcome. He was hurried and inattentive- didn't explain the menu or the wines. Water was topped up during meal. Seemed more intent on getting orders quickly which gave us a feeling of him being irritated. When pouring wine he leaned across rather than moving around the table. In contrast other staff were attentive without being obtrusive.

    Excellent service and superb food with the exception of the lemon tart which had rather soggy pastry.
