**Macello was recently rated #2 "BEST PIZZA" in Chicago by Chicago Magazine (November 2015)**
Italian cuisine from the Puglia region of Italy, Steaks & Chops. Macello, a rustic Italian restaurant and market/deli located in the Warehouse District (West Loop), offers an airy dining room with wood beams, exposed brick, and two wood-burning ovens. The menu features plenty of thin crust pizza; linguine with mixed seafood in a spicy cherry tomato sauce. The butcher shop inspired market located in the front of Macello stocks cured meats, cheese and food from the Puglia region- the "boot heel" of Italy. Macello appropriately translates to "slaughterhouse"-- the building housed a slaughterhouse in the 1920s.

Macello Ratings and Reviews
Outstanding ambiance. Impressive wine selection. Easy parking. Food overall is on par with most other Italian restaurants in the city. With the exception of their wood fire pizza/calzone/panzarotti, which are outstanding, nothing too special. Seafood was good, but slightly over done. Lacked depth of flavor.
I was really put off when the host told me to sit at any table I’d like and then chastised me for picking a 6 person table in the back (we were a group of 4 but the restaurant had multiple other 6 and 8 person tables available and I’ve sat there before when I was in a group of 4). The way it was handled was just uncomfortable. He was very condescending in his tone of and when I pointed out that there were other 6 person tables available he said “those are by the door and no one wants to sit there”, well guess where the 4 person tables were...yup.
I ultimately sat at a 4 person table as instructed.
It made for an uncomfortable start to the evening. I will give it 4 of 5 for service anyway because our servers were friendly and good about checking up on us.
Food wise...we ordered:
fried calamari - I found it to be rubbery, likely over cooked.
Spinach salad with goat cheese - it was fine. Not remarkable but produce was fresh. Goat cheese comes in one chunk, so break up if you’re sharing.
Pizzas - I forget the names of the pizzas but the margharita style one topped with arugula was good. It tasted very fresh. We also ordered one with some different sliced meats on it and it wasn’t as good. If I recall they have a brick oven there so the pizza does get a good crust if you like it that way.
I believe the prices are very good for what we got.
I would maybe come back for lunch. I don’t know, that initial reaction still rubs me the wrong way.
Went to Macello’s with customers before a BlackHawks game. Service was good. Waiter asked if we were attending game and we got served promptly. Menu had ample choices and variety. Possibly due to the crush of Hawks fans, 3 of our 4 meat entrees were over cooked. That did not happen on our previous visit. Nice Fulton Market vibe.
The food was amazing, our waiter was amazing, and restaurant was very cool. The front door staff was average and a little cold. Valet was reasonably priced, and the volume in the restaurant was good and we were able to carry on a conversation, yet didn't have to whisper.
First time at this restaurant and we will definitely be back. The service was attentive and spot on with descriptions and suggestions from the menu. The pasta was prepared perfectly al dente and the amount of jumbo shrimp in the dish was impressive. I had the fish special with seafood risotto which had an abundance of fresh seafood and was very creamy and flavorful. The menu selections were plentiful and can't wait to go back and try one of the many pizzas they offered!
Our evening at Macello was wonderful. While our table reservation was delayed a bit, the Macello staff was warm and accommodating, going so far as to offer us a round of drinks and complimentary Margherita pizza while waiting. The manager and bartender were both conversational and friendly, and made our wait quite enjoyable. I personally recommend The Pub and the Truffle Lasagna (not sure what it’s actually called). The ambience was fabulous, loved the inviting, family vibe. Will definitely return.
We met friends here after Hawks game. Game went into overtime so some arrived late. They graciously held the kitchen open for us. We were their last customers and we never felt rushed. Service was great and the food .... terrific. We ordered a salmon, filet, chicken, pasta and apps to share. Everyone in group kept talking what a find this place was. Good ambiance, good food and great service. Will keep coming back. Great place to come before or after any event at the United Center. Short Uber ride over to UC.
Wonderful. They feature food from the Puglia region in Italy. Having just returned from my vacation in Bari, I needed a Pugliese food fix. First of all, the crunchy bread with olive oil and fresh parmesan cheese was the best I've had in Chicago. The stuffed calamari was as good as my mother's, they seasoned the stuffing with fresh herbs. and the calamari was tender and not rubbery. And, the lamb casserole was delicious. Lamb chops on a bed of rice, potatoes and olives EXACTLY like my mother's. The lamb was succulent. I couldn't pass up the dessert ... light and fluffy tiramisu.
Food was tasty & delicious . I had the special which was Halibut and I think it was the best fish I ever had. It came with asparagus which was cooked perfectly. I also had a Moscow mule which was made perfect! We were going to the Blackhawks game and didn't have a ton of time but really enjoyed the experience ! I'd like to dine here again but at a slower pace so I can really enjoy all the flavors. Very impressed ! Mmmm!!
