Italian cuisine from the Puglia region of Italy, Steaks & Chops. Macello, a rustic Italian restaurant and market/deli located in the Warehouse District (West Loop), offers an airy dining room with wood beams, exposed brick, and two wood-burning ovens. The menu features plenty of thin crust pizza; linguine with mixed seafood in a spicy cherry tomato sauce. The butcher shop inspired market located in the front of Macello stocks cured meats, cheese and food from the Puglia region- the "boot heel" of Italy. Macello appropriately translates to "slaughterhouse"-- the building housed a slaughterhouse in the 1920s.
**Macello was recently rated #2 "BEST PIZZA" in Chicago by Chicago Magazine (November 2015)**

Fabulous food!! Authentic and fresh. Waitress was a little sassy and I did not appreciate that. I have a garlic and onion allergy and she made it like I couldn’t get anything without it. Otherwise food was 10/10!
Love this restaurant! Food is amazing and staff is very friendly!
Had a wonderful time at Marcello! Sat outside on patio, was lovely. I had Adriatic (seafood risotto) which was delicious. My wife has pasta San Giuseppe which was also very good. We had mixed grilled seafood (shrimp, octopus and calamari) served over rapini, for an app which is more than enough to share, which was fantastic! Our server, Martha was super friendly and knowledge.
Excellent!!! Gustavo is AMAZING!!!
It was great.
Marcello is Chicago’s hidden secret. It is an incredible restaurant for authentic Italian delights in a gorgeous setting. I highly recommend our server Rene. He took great care of us. The atmosphere, service and cuisine make this a definite yes!!
Excellent service. Delicious food
Great food, nice ambiance. We enjoyed our dinner.
This was our first time to this gem of an Italian restaurant. The service and food was wonderful. I highly recommend the pasta and the lambchop casserole. Great wine list and don't without the tiramusu.
Sadly, despite Macello's great reputation, this time we ran into a hurricane supplied from the rear door overhang that when bustled by the wind dropped hundreds of gallons of water on patrons across the patio and on my date. Sadly NO ONE told us they "were sorry" or "can we help you dry off?" or "here's a glass of wine for your trouble". Sorry, as there are many choices in Chicago we'll have to think carefully about coming back until the management figures out how to not have movie set rainfall during meals.
Wonderful meal, not fancy or fussy but many delicious traditional choices and atmosphere.
Celebrating a birthday day. The food was excellent. We sat on the patio and the weather was nice. This is a hidden gem.
Macello is the perfect restaurant for dinner. The staff is so friendly and accommodating! It has a beautiful atmosphere for inside or outdoor dining. There is an extensive wine list with reasonable pricing. The food is delicious! The cook will also make adjustments according to your preferences. The servers are outstanding! Gustavo and the other wait staff feel like family. This restaurant serves authentic Italian dishes and will soon become any guests favorite.
We had a really nice dinner. I had the pounded pork chop with risotto and my husband had a beef roll on orichetta, sorry for the spelling, both were excellent. We were going to a concert at city winery at 8:00 but didn’t want to eat there. This restaurant is super close and I’m so glad we came here for dinner and then headed over. Service was very friendly and knowledgeable. I like the building too. We drove, not sure sure about public transportation. Uber would be easy. Street parking was okay but we didn’t want to go too far, the neighborhood gets industrial within a few blocks. We’ll be back for sure!
So fun. Delicious food. Phenomenal service
New to the city and craving Italian, my search led to Macello. And it did not disappoint. From the colorful, inviting space with the lanterns and low lighting to the engaging staff, I’m glad I decided to venture there. Last but not least, the food was amazing. I appreciated the diverse offerings (food the calamari was fried to perfection, my friend enjoyed her octopus, and the brick-oven pizza was an ooey gooey good time. I’ll definitely be back!
The intense smell of the deli in the front of the restaurant kind of killed the ambience right as you walked in. The food was ok. I thought the staff was inconsiderate because we still had 30 minutes left of our table (90 minute dine in limit) and we wanted to get dessert but our waiter told us we were out of time. I would not recommend this restaurant or go back.
Charming Italian restaurant. Food is delicious! Love the wood burning pizza oven. We had pizza as our appetizer and it was light and like the pizza we had in Naples Italy. We had pasta for our entrees and it was fabulous. The cappuccino and desserts were also delicious. Great ambiance and service. Highly recommend.
2nd time visiting. The good was great but the service was sub par. Our server had a large party before us and it definitely showed. I had a guest w me so it was embarrassing to say the least. The other servers had to grab his attention to get back to us. We had to go to the bar to check out. Not very happy about the service at all
One of the best places for Italian! Would highly recommend to anyone. Great service, friendly staff, good food options and specials.
Macello is a little gem in a still underdeveloped part of Fulton Market that deserves greater recognition. The restaurant is lively, breezy and comforting with a nice outdoor space and a spacious interior. The food was fresh and delicious, from the prosciutto e melone to the carciofi ripieni to the catch of the day (halibut with asparagus & baby clam risotto). The service was also excellent, checking in on our needs with attention but not nuisance. Highly recommended!
Excellent dining experience. Food always good. Perfect martinis to start the night with a “wow” desert special to end the night. Well done!
We need somewhere to eat on Friday evening and we selected Marcello.
We had the opportunity to eat outside in a nice space. The small tables were like cabarets/cocktails mixed with rectangular tables. The eating restate was wanting.
The cocktails table, a bit small for dining, we did endure the experience.
The shrimps on the bed of over salted spinach was one of appetizer. The second was very will present Calamari with an excellent sauce on the side. The calamari was without salt (what was wIse decision no salt).
The wine was favored by Rochelle, it was a riesling .
The main course continue to wanting experience.
The conversation describe was over the top. The halibut with a Lemon butter white wine caper sauce was the fish special. The The risotto was substitute with a linguine and clam sauce pasta which became the star of the dish along with the well prepared asparagus worth returning for.
The octopus made its appearance with red onion white wines with linguine. The texture was liken to rubber when ask how was yhe meal. The reply by the waiter was some on the order, the polpo was fresh…. The pasta was eatable.
The desserts were a step up for the meal. Vanilla gelato strawberries on the side fresh cut along with a sweet balsamic vinegar with whip cream and top with black pepper.
The other dessert was spumoni with a very decorative edge on the plate, the spumoni was reasonable.
The conversation with another patron after coming out of the bathroom was excellent. He also question his meal, spoke well of having great pizza in the pass. I indicated as a rule we don’t eat pizza for dinner, so maybe we’ll try again for pizza in the afternoon.
This maybe the post COVID-19 breakout.
Next tome was begin another food journey.
Great as always!!
The food wasn’t as good quality as we expected, especially for the price we paid. Ambience was great: we sat outside. Service wasn’t the best. It took over 20m for us to get a drink. Waiter was very friendly but not as consistent with checking in on us.
Gustavo was fabulous and made our 30th wedding anniversary celebration special and memorable! The food was off the charts good. Thank you for a special night.
Delicious fresh food that took time to prepare-you could tell only the finest ingredients were used. We felt transported to a charming restaurant in Puglia. The service was warm and attentive. It was the perfect experience.
Great food and drinks with a fun ambiance. Cocktails were delicious!
Authentic Italian place with a great wine selection. Definitely will be back!
The family celebrated Father's Day. The service was outstanding and the food was even better!
This was my second time dining at Macello’s with family and friends and the experience was just as wonderful as the first time. The staff is friendly and very accommodating. The food is to die for!! True Italian recipes that taste just like my Nona’s from Italy. I would 10/10 recommend this place to anyone who wants to impress out of town visitors.
One of the best Italian meals I’ve had since moving to Chicago 3 years ago. I can’t believe it was my first time trying Macello. I will definitely be back again soon.
Celebrated Father’s Day.
Rene always gives a phenomenal service. Always so attentive and friendly. Food is delicious, I always comeback here with my family.
Great server, wine, and delicious pasta
The food is amazing!! We went all out this night, it was the first time seeing these friends since before Covid the server was excellent and helped us order excellent bottles of wine, apps, main courses, dessert… the works. Super energetic, festive spot and I can’t believe we hadn’t been there before! We will be back.
I have bee there prior and really enjoyed it. This time It was difficult getting service
We enjoyed our meal very much. This was our first visit to this restaurant as we were visiting Chicago overnight on our way back to Kentucky. Our server was friendly and enthusiastic about all the food and made great suggestions.
Was in Chicago for a long weekend. Had the beat Italian food I’ve ever had here! Alex our server and his father were amazing! This will be our go to whenever we are back!
Some of the best homemade pasta I’ve ever eaten. Great atmosphere and service.
