Italian cuisine from the Puglia region of Italy, Steaks & Chops. Macello, a rustic Italian restaurant and market/deli located in the Warehouse District (West Loop), offers an airy dining room with wood beams, exposed brick, and two wood-burning ovens. The menu features plenty of thin crust pizza; linguine with mixed seafood in a spicy cherry tomato sauce. The butcher shop inspired market located in the front of Macello stocks cured meats, cheese and food from the Puglia region- the "boot heel" of Italy. Macello appropriately translates to "slaughterhouse"-- the building housed a slaughterhouse in the 1920s.

The food was not great unfortunately. Didn’t have much flavor. Majority of people in our party did not like it and wouldn’t return.
Macello's is the best Italian cuisine on the planet. The surf and turf I ate was out of this world. This included massive prawns and rack of lamb. The meal was paired with Papale primitivo. I highly recommend Macello's.
Had a fantastic experience with Gustavo when I came here for my girlfriend’s birthday and ordered off the Chicago Restaurant Week menu.
Cheap Italian. Think Olive Garden quality but with west loop prices
Amazing pasta, great service
I read reviews about the restaurant being frequently crowded, but we were one of only three or four occupied tables all evening.
Food was ok, probably good if it had been offered at about 2/3 the price point. Pizza was lower quality than MOD. Pasta was nice and hearty.
Service was constantly intrusive - interrupting, nudging us to pay the bill, moving plates around for no reason when we were trying to have conversation, etc. We had a 7:30 reservation and were rushed out the door at 9, and then the lights were turned right off. Not sure our $200 was well spent. So many better options
One of my absolute favorites in the West Loop! The staff are all friendly, the food is always delicious and who doesn't like ending a meal with a shot of Limoncello.
We love to eat here in the neighborhood!!!! Always delicious and quiet so we can talk! Service perfect! We will be back!
My daughters thirtieth birthday. Awesome
From start to finish, an excellent dining experience. Half price wine and live music on Wednesdays are awesome. Food was top notch.
Went to Macello for a date night. The atmosphere was energetic and fun. The service was awesome. We really appreciated the recommendations and preferences from our server. The food and wine were great! I would defintely return.
Very good pizza and pasta entrees.
Our reservation was for four on Saturday night at 6:30. We were seated promptly and separately (we were late) without any wait. Bus boys were at the table within two minutes, feeling our water. They kept it full all night. Our server was at our table within 10 minutes for a drink order, our drinks took another 10 minutes to arrive, and we placed an appetizer order then for the Margherita pizza. Good thin crust and good size for our party of four. I had had a big lunch so ordered only the spinach salad and the sausage and bean appetizer. The food was spectacularly good. My wife had a pasta similar to Tagliatelle but with a ridged edge, with a mushroom and sausage brown sauce which was equally delicious. The other couple had a Orecchiette with broccolini (and both the pasta and the sauce were delicious and cooked to perfect doneness) a nd another pasta with red sauce that I did not taste but which was said to be delicious. My house special Manhattan was so good I wanted a second, but had to wait another 10 minutes from the time My drink was empty to get a refill. The ratio of servers to customers was seemingly quite high, and resulted in a delay.
Other entrées on the menu besides pasta were very expensive – $44 for salmon, for example. $40 for saltimbocca, 42 for a lamb chop.
The food and setting was very authentic, though the cavernous roof and the party of 16 having a birthday party at the tableright next to us lent itself to a very loud environment.
We finished with coffees and a delicious chocolate mousse.
Macello's has become a favorite, tartufata is great as appetizer and prices are mostly reasonable.
Always great food and good service
The room is very nice, and the service was attentive. My lamb chops were a bit charred and the pizza crust was a little soggy for my taste. But good enough that I'll be going back.
The restaurant was half occupied and they had all the diners seated in one section crammed together. It would have been nice to spread us out. Our server was not that great....he brought our food without silverware and walked off. My husband had to request silverware from the bar. The food was delicious though. I wish the service had been better.
Christmas Eve family dinner. Food and service were outstanding!
Came here to celebrate a birthday and it was a pleasant experience. Nice atmosphere/decor. Food was great. Easy to find street parking. I would definitely come back.
My prior experiences have been very good, but this time the food took forever to come out and it really made the sitting time uncomfortably long. The food was good, but the specials were rather pricey and the server failed to mention the cost when presenting them as an option. Overall, it was rather disappointing and might cause me to try another place before my next Blackhawks game.
Always a great place to meet and have a excellent dinner. The staff is friendly and energetic.
This place is magic💥
Loved our dinner! Excellent wine as well. So glad we found this restaurant on open table!
eaten THERE SEVERAL TIMES BEFORE. never DISAPPOINTED.
We have always enjoyed our meal at Mecello. I did get the gluten free option (Noodles), it wasn't the greatest. The rest of the table was very happy with their meals. We find that the restaurant is a bit crowded, and my seat left little room for me to move. I was up against another large table with an infant, and the baby was sleeping in her seat under the table, leaving the mother pushed out into the isle and up against my chair. I felt uncomfortable and their didn't seem to be anything the waitstaff could manage to do, as it is very close quarters . I understand that the more seating in a busy restaurant is important, although I'm not sure it's to their benefit to sandwich everyone in so they are uncomfortable. Otherwise our evening was very nice.
I went many many times at macello Is my favorite place. This time horrible, pizza was stale not like before anymore. The menu is all plastic look like a diner one. The food quality went down and the prices went up. Taste very different. Maybe they change the chef. The server was horrible and is the second time I got the same server, not attentive at all very meccanical not too much effort.
Great great restaurant. We loved the atmosphere, food was excellent, and service outstanding. We will be back soon.
Excellent food and service. I bring all out of town guests here and they love it!
Our favorite Italian restaurant in Chicago.
Excellent Italian restaurant with a beautiful eclectic atmosphere and helpful wait staff.
Our server was slow and not especially friendly. Other than that, the place was very good.
Unfortunately, we had a terrible experience with our server on Saturday night. She “forgot” she took our order not just once, but twice!!! She literally came up to the table three different times and greeted us as if she never saw us before. It was really, really strange. She offered no apology. We waited for over an hour for two appetizers. We didn’t want to take chances on ordering any
More food, so we called it quits after the appetizers. Management was aware of the “problem”, but never came over to our table. . I wish the management had come over to talk to us, but they didn’t take the time.
Great experience, food and service. The ambiance is great too. I will come back again and highly recommend others go.
This was our third time dining at Macello. Our previous visits were in the summer, and we enjoyed sitting on the charming outdoor patio. On those occasions, we tried their specialty dishes from the Puglia region of Italy, and they were delicious. This time, on a chilly November evening, we ate inside. The restaurant was busy, but not overwhelming noisy. We tried the grilled vegetable appetizer (outstanding) and two of their individually sized pizzas, the Macello and the Bianca: both were excellent. We will definitely be going back again!
I LOVE Macello. The food is wonderful, MUCH better than most Italian restaurants. The menu is more sophisticated and the wine is very good. The atmosphere is very warm and cozy yet cool and hip at the same time. Perfect for the West Loop! In the warm weather months, the back outside garden is amazing...super romantic! My only complaint is it can get noisy in the dining room and when they have live music, it can be hard to talk. I would suggest keeping the music level down or eliminating it...not needed because the food is so amazing and the ambience so charming.
Excellent meals for all
Service was great. Bartender made excellent cocktails. Food delicious.
