Italian cuisine from the Puglia region of Italy, Steaks & Chops. Macello, a rustic Italian restaurant and market/deli located in the Warehouse District (West Loop), offers an airy dining room with wood beams, exposed brick, and two wood-burning ovens. The menu features plenty of thin crust pizza; linguine with mixed seafood in a spicy cherry tomato sauce. The butcher shop inspired market located in the front of Macello stocks cured meats, cheese and food from the Puglia region- the "boot heel" of Italy. Macello appropriately translates to "slaughterhouse"-- the building housed a slaughterhouse in the 1920s.

This place is magic💥
We have always enjoyed our meal at Mecello. I did get the gluten free option (Noodles), it wasn't the greatest. The rest of the table was very happy with their meals. We find that the restaurant is a bit crowded, and my seat left little room for me to move. I was up against another large table with an infant, and the baby was sleeping in her seat under the table, leaving the mother pushed out into the isle and up against my chair. I felt uncomfortable and their didn't seem to be anything the waitstaff could manage to do, as it is very close quarters . I understand that the more seating in a busy restaurant is important, although I'm not sure it's to their benefit to sandwich everyone in so they are uncomfortable. Otherwise our evening was very nice.
I went many many times at macello Is my favorite place. This time horrible, pizza was stale not like before anymore. The menu is all plastic look like a diner one. The food quality went down and the prices went up. Taste very different. Maybe they change the chef. The server was horrible and is the second time I got the same server, not attentive at all very meccanical not too much effort.
Great great restaurant. We loved the atmosphere, food was excellent, and service outstanding. We will be back soon.
Excellent food and service. I bring all out of town guests here and they love it!
Our favorite Italian restaurant in Chicago.
Excellent Italian restaurant with a beautiful eclectic atmosphere and helpful wait staff.
Our server was slow and not especially friendly. Other than that, the place was very good.
Unfortunately, we had a terrible experience with our server on Saturday night. She “forgot” she took our order not just once, but twice!!! She literally came up to the table three different times and greeted us as if she never saw us before. It was really, really strange. She offered no apology. We waited for over an hour for two appetizers. We didn’t want to take chances on ordering any
More food, so we called it quits after the appetizers. Management was aware of the “problem”, but never came over to our table. . I wish the management had come over to talk to us, but they didn’t take the time.
Great experience, food and service. The ambiance is great too. I will come back again and highly recommend others go.
This was our third time dining at Macello. Our previous visits were in the summer, and we enjoyed sitting on the charming outdoor patio. On those occasions, we tried their specialty dishes from the Puglia region of Italy, and they were delicious. This time, on a chilly November evening, we ate inside. The restaurant was busy, but not overwhelming noisy. We tried the grilled vegetable appetizer (outstanding) and two of their individually sized pizzas, the Macello and the Bianca: both were excellent. We will definitely be going back again!
I LOVE Macello. The food is wonderful, MUCH better than most Italian restaurants. The menu is more sophisticated and the wine is very good. The atmosphere is very warm and cozy yet cool and hip at the same time. Perfect for the West Loop! In the warm weather months, the back outside garden is amazing...super romantic! My only complaint is it can get noisy in the dining room and when they have live music, it can be hard to talk. I would suggest keeping the music level down or eliminating it...not needed because the food is so amazing and the ambience so charming.
Excellent meals for all
Service was great. Bartender made excellent cocktails. Food delicious.
GENUINE ITALIAN, NOT CONTRIVED EXCELLENT VALUE. NOT A TOURIST TRAP
Excellent service! Delicious and authentic food!
Wonderful. Food was delicious
On my second visit I was seated so that I could see more of the restaurant and I really enjoyed the vibe of Macello. The staff was very friendly and attentive. We were disappointed that we couldn’t order our fav appetizer because they were out of burrrata. My dinner partner and both ordered a dish with Laganellle and unfortunately the pasta was very dry. I typically prefer a saucier dish but there really wasn’t a sauce. My dish lacked flavor and I ended up adding salt to my pasta.
I love the restaurant and I’ll return but they had a very off night (food).
The food and service was fantastic as always. Macello's staff is always welcoming, and I know I will always come back.
Big Miss: Arrived 15 minutes early for a 7:00 pm rsvp and the entry to the restaurant was a circus; so jammed with people waiting to be seated that for patrons trying to leave it was like swimming upstream. Finally made my way to the front of the mosh pit to find the hostess, who when she found my reservation said that there was going to be a wait but couldn’t/wouldn’t say how long. Apparently there was a show at the UC and a bunch of diners without rsvps showed up at 6:00 and the manager sat them apparently believing they would eat in an hour and leave for the show. Well, that didn’t happen until after 8:00, so our party of five was seated 1:15 hrs after our rsvp. Based on this train wreck experience, likely won’t be back. Too bad, this was a reliable favorite.
We had a 6:45PM reservation on Saturday night, November 2 for six people which we confirmed via telephone on October 30th. We were not seated until 8:00PM because they were overbooked. How can you overbook with an online reservation system? The hostess was new and clueless. No explanations or offers for a free cocktail while we waited. MANY frustrated diners with similar experiences. Apparently, Macello is under new management. Lesson one in business, take care of your customers. We have had many wonderful meals at Macello, but we will not be back.
I feel for them, I do. I understand it’s new management. But wow, what a shame. Very very very very disappointed. Had a reservation for 6:45pm that they couldn’t even seat us for. Couldn’t even tell us when they could seat us. 6pm reservations in front of us who hadn’t sat. People fighting in line. Managers throwing the poor hostess under the bus and not helping her out. They had absolutely no clue what they were doing. Why even make the reservation? Not only that, but they called TWICE to confirm we were coming, which I said yes. Really upsetting, as this used to be one of our favorite spots in the city. Again I understand it’s under new management, but we will not be coming back again. Sad.
I first have to say, the food was amazing - authentic, well-prepared, delicious. We had the bracciole and orecchiette, and a pork chop saltimbocca that was a featured special. The restaurant itself is very appealing. Dark wood, soft lighting, with colorful globes that hang from the ceiling and a wall mural of bright colors. The stone oven is visible at one end of the dining room, which added a nice touch. Our server was charming and knowledgeable about the menu. He saw we weren’t in a hurry and never rushed the service. My only “ding” to the evening was that my sister had told him that we were celebrating my birthday. After dinner he presented us with dessert menus; we assumed there was not going to be a complimentary dessert so we ordered a dessert to share. When he brought the paid dessert he also had a comp piece of tiramisu with a candle - he and another server sang “Happy Birthday”. Very nice except that had we known a comp dessert was coming we would not have purchased one. We felt slightly “tricked”. None the less, it was a great meal - I’ll definitely return.
Celebrated my 50th birthday. The food and service was excellent. Joe and his staff are excellent.
This was our second trip to Macellos and it did not disappoint. The food and service is excellent. We will be back!
Great pre-game meal spot. Very authentic Italian, with great wine and great service!
Always a treat. Our entire group was pleased.
I first discovered Macellos during Chicago restaurant week several years ago. I so enjoyed my dinner and value at that time, that I’ve been back many times and never been disappointed. At this visit I brought three friends from out of town who all appreciate a good meal. My guess totally enjoyed their meal and were impressed with The gluten-free menu and selections. The surf and turf was excellent with the steaks prepared perfectly. Our waiter also suggested a scallops special appetizer. The scallops were a generous size, cooked perfectly, and very flavorful. To accompany our meal we had a wonderful bottle of wine and a great time was enjoyed by all. Thanks to our waiter who made great suggestions and was always attentive, we had a great time and experience
A great place for before a game at the United Center. Good food fairly priced. Scallops special was outstanding and their Calamari is always near perfect. If it was not under the L tracks it would be another star on Ambiance.
The location is a bit out of the way, with a noisy el just outside the front door, but inside you quickly forget about that with the cheerful pizza ovens visible fire, the bold floral wallpaper, and enormous balls of light overhead in amazing patterns and colors. It has a festive and eclectic atmosphere. The food was AMAZING. My sea bass was tender and buttery and melt in my mouth delicious and the pasta and pizza are top notch. Service was also excellent. The only downside was the place turned off the lights and took away our water glasses to get us out of there and it wasn't even 9PM! Ok, it was Sunday but still. Who closes a restaurant before 9PM?
We have never been so we decided to try it out. The four of enjoyed our meals then sat and talked. We never felt rushed. We live a fair distance away, but would return when we are back on the area.
Been here several times on past business trips. Great service, Wednesday night half price wine nights with excellent selections to choose from.
Seafood appetizer was fantastic, octopus, squid. Pasta with braciole in red sauce. So good, look forward to going back on the next trip.
We love Macello! It’s our “go to” place for dinner! We always know we will get great food and wonderful service!
Great food. Wonderful Italian restaurant.
Fantastic Strawberry Bellini!
Macello never disappoints! Our group of 10, celebrating a special evening, received a warm welcome, excellent recommendations from servers for both food and wine selection. Attentive service, delicious foods and wine made for yet another memorable evening at Macello!
A very nice place. Food was average Italian fare. A little too heavy on sauce and cheese. I had a dish with mussels and beans and pasta. Two of the mussels were not opened. Lack of quality control?. Wine was excellent and service was outstanding.
We have been going to Macello for many years and have been recommending it to just about everyone we know. I have never had a bad experience here. The food is great, the wine selection is very good and the service is fantastic. We highly recommend Macello!! Our favorite things to order. - Cavatelli al forno - Orrechiette with Brasciole - Burrata flatbread - Chocolate Lava cake - Margarita Pizza Buon Apetito!
