Lovely food and beautiful setting but unfortunately we felt rushed to leave the table. We had a reservation at seven pm and at 8.15 they lit up the room and it felt like the staff wanted to pack up to go home. May have been unlucky, but it didn't live up to the expectations from previous reviews I'd read.

So much potential at this place that it is difficult to see it fall just a bit short in places. We were guests at the Inn and had both stayed and dined at Macallum House in years past so we were eager to see what the restaurant was offering on our return. Let me say that the breakfasts, which are included in the hotel stay, are OUTSTANDING. We ordered the cornmeal pancakes and the eggs Benedict and were blown away by the quality. We wanted to order them again immediately, but stayed ourselves till the next day when we had a repeat experience. Definitely worth a visit for the breakfasts even if you are staying elsewhere. One big plus is the option of dining on the lovely wrap around porch with views of the ocean, which also allowed us the option of dining with our dogs. I don't believe they serve dinner out there (usually too cold to be comfortable anyway), but definitely a plus for those traveling with their pets.

I wish I could be as effusive about dinner, but it was just OKAY for us. Server was cordial if a bit laid back, and he didn't seem to be too familiar with the "new" Autumn menu. The Chanterelle flatbread we ordered as a starter was just okay nothing really memorable. The duck entree was the one thing the server seemed somewhat enthusiastic about, so I went with that while my companion ordered the market seafood special, which I believe was halibut with a saffron risotto. The duck was great, well cooked and well seasoned accompanied by flavorful sides, and was a very healthy portion. If anything I think they could cut the portion back a bit and charge a bit less, as it was just under $40. The fish on the other hand was a MAJOR disappointment. The flavor combinations just didn't work, it was poorly seasoned and the Saffron Risotto just wasn't good. Thankfully that healthy portion of duck meat came in handy as that basically fed the two of us. Overall we expected more at these price points, though what they do well they do very well.

Gorgeous historic house, nice view of the ocean from the front porch. Cozy dining room with a fireplace, very romantic, easy to have an intimate conversation. Service for dinner was perfect. I loved the pork chop, my husband thought the filet was just o.k. Sides were delicious. Nice cozy bar next door with great cocktails and quiet live music later in the evening. I appreciated the great wine list. Overall, we had a fantastic dinner celebrating our anniversary. Highly recommend it!

Food excellent, but where they seat you is critical. Front room had lovely flickering fireplace, romantic lighting and empty tables. We were seated in the back room with full tables garish lighting, fireplace but no fire, with one side of the table looking into a darkened storage room. Waiter began by apologizing for not yet knowing the new menu, which was an understatement. We ordered pate, assured it had minimal garlic, which makes sick. True, but the pate toasts were made from garlic bread and our main course vegetables had been given the garlic swirl treatment. The point is they're phoning it in. Bar by contrast has great xocktails and service and ambiance. But tiny.

Food was good. Being from San Francisco, I wasn't wowed.... but the biggest disappointment is that 1) we were staying there on our 10-year Anniversart and there was NO attempt to acknowledge that, even though I noted it... and 2) we were actually married at MacCallum house 10-years ago, and the hotel didn't make any attempt to make it memorable; no bottle of wine or champagne in the room, no rose petals or ANYTHING to make it special.....very sad that the restaurant/hotel has taken out all the sentimentality.... seems contrary to what a sleepy Victorian would represent, and contrary to why we've been such loyal patrons after all these years.

The restaurant has a great ambiance, in an old Victorian style house, and the servers are very good. Unfortunately, those are the only positives I can report. Although we had a reservation for 7:15, we were not seated until 7:40. The hostess did not apologize or treat this as an unusual occurrence, so my impression is that is their normal operation.

The food was not worth the wait--just the opposite. My dinner guest had a salmon fettucine that arrived with pasta floating in broth and tasting like a mediocre fish soup. I had grilled halibut over greens. The greens were sauteed with mushrooms and bacon. You'd think that this would be tasty given the ingredients, but they managed to make this dish not only bland but unpleasantly bitter. The halibut itself was grilled perfectly, but with no seasoning or sauce to add flavor. It was almost completely tasteless.

Adding insult to injury, this restaurant is among the pricier establishments in town. I have not had such a poor dining experience in many years. My advice would be to come here for the ambiance only, maybe for drinks. Be prepared for a long wait even if you make reservations.

Undercooked Duck Breast. Skin not crispy. Meet raw on the bottom and swimming in blood. Snippy waitress that informed me cooking longer makes it tough.

Table tops scarred and look like came from thrift shop. Bugs in light fixtures. For prices they charge need to put table cloths on tables or white paper.

Breakfast cook next morning couldn't even cook eggs over easy without breaking the yoke. Breakfast sausage over cooked (burned) meat and onions. Gave us make your own Mimosa. Champagne flute with the champagne and orange juice on the side. Who does that! Won't be back!

Possibly the best pork chop I've ever had. I come here whenever I come up to Mendocino. Every dish has both delicious, perfectly prepared components, but the key is to try them together - when you discover that the flavors actually harmonize with each other.

We had a great meal with friends. The steak was fabulous and the clam chowder was out of this world. There were many GF options which made us happy. The Elderflower coctail was also a hit!
We were 15 minutes late and I don't think I earned my table points?

Guests for the Hotel kept entering through the restaurant dragging luggage behind them. This was a bit disruptive. This door (a cut through to the hotel) should have been closed.
My food arrived cold and had to be sent back. The quality of the food was good however. No apology from waitstaff re: cold food.

We read fairly good reviews and wanted to support a local establishment while in Mendocino . I read the description of the fish tacos and they sounded great . They were not . The fish smelled very fishy and was a funny color . I was honestly scared we would get sick as we ate a small anount . My husband and I left most on the plate . We were not asked why . My husband ordered a fresh corn salad that was good . It was totally a waste of money . The house that the restaurant is in is charming , the hostess was very sweet and the gardens are stunning . Disappointed that this was our last meal out in Mendocino .

First time to this rather well known restaurant. The hostess who greeted us and also checked in with us during our meal was the friendliest person we encountered. The butter lettuce/shrimp salad was exceptional; my duck was nicely cooked and presented, could have had a more distinctive sauce; halibut nicely done and served. Overall a nice experience, but I think due to all the talk we heard about this restaurant before hand made our expectations too high. The caramel sauce on the ice cream was superb.

We had the tasting menu and it was way to much food, if you are not a lumberjack. Each of the five courses was probably sixty percent of a regular portion including the sides. The wines were not particularly well matched to their course (e.g., sparkling wine and caprice salad). The individual items were well prepared, but needed to be smaller and more focused with fewer sides.

Our second time to MacCullum. Really got to appreciate all the historic photos and legacy about the building. We were seated in the "living room" with a view to the Coast through the window. They are noted for their creative cocktails menu so take advantage. Always have incredibly fresh seafood and their preparations are visually attractive and terrific on the palate. This is probably our second favorite place on the Mendo Coast and is right in the heart of Downtown Mendocino. Service is very attentive and the wine list is full of great local wines.

If you want a great view of old Mendocino and the bay in a quaint old home converted to a hotel, then this is the place. But buyer beware. We were placed at the worst table in the room with many better tables open. We asked to move after seating. Good service but poor food. My dish, a steak, was served cold. Many other restaurants to choose from in Mendocino with same view and better food.

Unbelievable experience. Went in for cocktails and appetizers ahead of a reservation at a different restaurant in the area, and everything was so wonderful from the hostess, to the bartender, the atmosphere, the food and drinks, we cancelled our original reservation and stayed for dinner. Enjoyed it so much ate there a second night.
