Dinner, once served inside the Main Historic House, will now be enjoyed alfresco. Enjoy a hybrid of full tableside service with glassware, silverware, all with the safest precautions around!
As always, food is prepared to order with an emphasis on the use of sustainable meats & seafood along with organic, seasonal produce to create delicious fresh cuisine.
The food is complimented by an extensive wine list featuring local and regional bottles at reasonable prices; there is a full bar & innovative cocktail list with creative concoctions that change to highlight the best of the season.

Always fresh and delicious. A real deal for foodies. The steak and the duck are always choice, and the fried chicken on the cafe menu is a classic. Great ambiance in a magical location.
When we initially were seated, the wait staff was quite attentive. However, it took a bit before our actual waiter came and began taking our order. Two in our party shared the crab cocktail and thoroughly enjoyed it. They were still talking about it the next day. When our main courses came, the food was just warm and one dish had to be sent back because of this. The flavors were good but since the dishes did not come out hot, it took away from the enjoyment of the meal. It’s ashamed that this seemed like an off night, as we have had better experiences at McCallum.
One thing that we all agreed on was that the corkage price was too high at $30 per bottle. This was a surprise as we were not told this upfront. Guess we should have inquired, our mistake.
Would we come back, Yes.
This is a more upscale B&B in Mendocino. Better linens, better beds, even a tv. Their cocktail lounge with a real roaring fire is awesome and great cocktails. Also had dinner and it was above average with spectacular service. Grounds are a fairytale setting. Stayed in the barn in the lower rooms -- really no view and noise from upstairs. Still, how much are you in your room with the cliffs so close by. Great central location. Have stayed at 6 or 7 other venues there and this is my favorite.
This has always been a favorite place for us to dine in Mendocino. This last visit was very disappointing. My salad was outstanding but everything else was either poor or lacking. We specifically asked that my daughters duck breast have no pink in it. We made a special point to emphasize this with our waiter. It came blood rare. My scallops while cooked perfectly were bland. My husbands filet was cooked perfectly and seasoned well but the smallest one we’ve ever seen, buried under a sea of arugula. Desserts were unmemorable. My beignets were basically donut holes, my husbands banana split was served on a green banana.
Now with that being said our lodging was outstanding and the breakfasts delicious. Dinner was just disappointing

This was our first visit to the MacCallum House restaurant. We felt that the quality for the value was just okay. The prices were a little high. We got the crab cocktail - which looks and has the consistency of a chicken salad. It was okay but not great. We had the gnocchi appetizer which was pretty good. We got the lamb shank which had lots of meat and was cooked well but a little salty and a pretty heavy dish overall. My husband had the duck our waitress mentioned it would be cooked medium rare which is normally fine but it was cooked inconsistently throughout. So some pieces were really rare one looked barely cooked. The souffle dessert and drinks were great. Overall it was a good experience the service and ambiance were great but we will probably choose someone else next time.

Very pleasant wait staff and the food was excellent.
For a small town, off season, I felt we should have a more personal touch. Young staff and we gave them a good buffer and tipped them well. But, there was a rowdy table around us and for a small town you would think someone would have apologized or offered another course or just personalized the experience a bit since we did the tasting course...

This unfortunately was one of the worst dining experiences I have had. The restaurant itself -very cozy, receptionist nice no complaints there. And the menu was impressive. We were seated at 7pm. And the place was pretty full. No sign of the waiter for 10 minutes to obtain a drink order. No problem he came—we got warm tasty homemade sourdough bread... then we ordered. The menu choice I made was -starter-gnocchi with black trumpet mushrooms and a tangy cheese reduction . Main course was Niman Ranch broiled pork chop in a red wine reduction pork belly reduction sauce with Yukon gold potatoes gratin and sautéed spinach. Yummy right? I got a bad feeling when the gnocchi starter came without any mushrooms—but ok, it tasted good enough . 90 minutes passed with the main courses finally arriving—pork chop without any reduction sauce and tough as shoe leather —with the potatoes and spinach extremely overcooked as well. I confronted the waiter who offered another entree. I told him that this should have never left the kitchen. They generously comped our wine and my entree. Clearly this is a kitchen that doesn’t know what it’s doing and at a price of $36+ an entree, take our advice and avoid McCallum House .

I did my best to mitigate your disappointment table side. Please know, it is our utmost goal to serve and delight happy guests. Fantastic dinner from start to finish. I've lived in the area for 8years, and that was probably the best meal we've had since moving here from San Francisco. The appetizers and dessert were good/average for a local higher end restaurant, but the main course exceeded expectation. The steak was perfectly cooked and seasoned and melted like butter in our mouths, the Scallops were perfection, my moms plate looked like she had licked it, and the Tuna was also a huge hit. Sides were so good too, not at all after thoughts. I couldn't finish my steak, so my friend graciously offered - he finished my spinach and my potatoes too! It was just one of those meals that you remember long after you're finished, it the best possible way.

Delicious meal! I had the Ahi special, my husband had the duck - both choices were perfectly cooked and seasoned, with delicious accompaniments.
I felt a little uncomfortable in the dining room just off the entryway - lots of waitstaff and guest traffic past the table - but it was nice to enjoy the fireplace. My elderflower martini was delightful, especially with the addition of a small flower from the garden. The service was adequate, not amazing - but our water glasses were well-attended which I always appreciate.
The restaurant is little pricey for everyday, but I think it’s pretty much on par with the rest of the area. I’d definitely go back for another wonderful meal - might ask in advance for a quieter table so we can thoroughly enjoy the delicious food and drink.
We visit here whenever we are in the area. Food is well prepared and often imaginative. I had the vegetarian dish of mushrooms with polenta and two sauces. Delicious. My husband raved about the duck breast.
Very impressed—one of the very few top drawer restaurants to make a truly gourmet, complex, absolutely delicious vegetarian main course... As good as the fish and meat, which everyone also raved over!

Food varies from year to year in terms of quality. Tuna was excellent; soup was lacking in flavor. Roasted mushrooms OK but nothing memorable. Service was pleasant but very slow.

The service was wonderful and sitting by the fireplace was perfect. The leek soup lacked something in the flavor but my order of scallops more than made up for it. The vanilla bean ice cream was real ice cream and was perfection. But the most memorable item was the coffee!! Just as rich as it should have been!

With the reputation MacCallum House has, we were expecting a wonderful dining experience for our wedding anniversary dinner. Our experience started off with our main wait staff greeting us with his clothing in disarray, saying he had to fix it and walking away. Next, we were brought bread and butter. The bread must have been left over from the morning service, stale and hard as a rock. My wife ordered the Venison which was cooked properly and was very tasty, the vegetables did not look appealing, and seemed very pedestrian. I had the Filet Mignon, ordered medium. I received a gray looking piece of meat, that was very thin, not much thicker than a strip or flank steak. Not at all what I expected for a $45 Filet. I also received two golf ball sized yukon gold potatoes cut in half, crispy on the outside, very dry on the inside. The surprise of the meal was the sauteed spinach with bacon...very tasty with crisp bacon chunks. Honestly, we've had better meals at Outback or Sizzler for a quarter of the price.
So sorry to hear your meal was not to your expectation. Your description is disappointing indeed. Our food is our pride and it is a pity to hear of your experience. Beautiful historic building with very nice woodwork. Meal was even better: I had Scallops then Steak, my bride had the pasta. Scallops were perfectly cooked and the steak melted in my mouth; I had a bite of the pasta - very good too & more importantly, She liked it. Dessert was apple beignets/cinnamon ice cream and was quite delicious. We would definitely recommend MacCallum House. Enjoy.

Lovely restaurant, friendly staff. This was a set Thanksgiving menu so the rest of the review applies only to that meal. Food was fine, felt like the kitchen phoned it in though. There was a set menu with several seatings, the experience had a rubber stamp feel which I've not come across with other set holiday meals. Plating was sloppy, and for the price and reputation of the house the culinary skills were not notable. The staff bussing the table asked me to hold onto my used utensils after the first course - what?? Even my neighborhood cafe has the good sense to replace a knife and fork.... Coffee slopped onto saucer, plates placed clumsily on the table, no followup on beverage service. All in all, we felt like customers, not guests. Other meals at MaCallum House have been much more satisfying.
