This was a surprise birthday gift to me from my wife. We now plan to make this an annual visit!
We visit this area about twice a year and always try to visit McCallum House. This year they were especially good. My husband had the duck chili verde and I had the halibut. Both were excellent. Their house-made ice cream was delicious.
One of our favorite places to eat in Mendocino. Chef Alan Kantor creates unique flavors from local fresh ingredients. The staff is extremely attentive.
It was, as always, amazing. We got married there and would recommend that in a heartbeat and go back every chance we get!
We've dined at McCallum House several times in the past few years and our experience has been outstanding.
For our dinner this past week:
Cocktails were outstanding. The current bartender has his act together! Perfect!
Dinner- in particular, compared to the past, I would say the meal was "OK"...not amazing, but not bad either. Dessert was excellent...entrees and starters were good, but not WOW (as in the past).
Ribs were poor quality, tasteless. Tomato soup ok.
Scallops ok. Not up to prior visits
Hi Bill, Happy to hear you have had a fantastic experience in the past with us, and sorry to hear your meal was not up to par. We are always happy to replace a dish that is not to your liking. Hope we can garner another return and impress you as in the past!
Wonderful vegetarian options. Great service from Julie and the entire staff.
Charming setting and a very nice meal, but service was impersonal.
From the perfect lawn to exquisite drinks on the porch on through dinner and the decadent creme brulee dessert, everything was ridiculously amazing! Every single thing was on point.
Great food and service. Did the paired meal.
Came for a nice, romantic dinner and this place did not disappoint. Server was delightful and knowledgeable. Gnocchi was a dream. Had the venison and lamb chops. The lamb was amazing! The venison dish wasn't balanced but still yummy. Had to leave early because I got a migraine halfway through dinner, the lamb was just as good the next day! We'll be back when we're in town!
Great service and food at a reasonable price. Good sized portions also.
Wonderful restaurant! Delicious! Can’t wait to go back! Our waiter was very
Nice and helpful. He didn’t have enough help or he was just mixed up that night. He was still great and we didn’t mind waiting. You need to go!
Happy to have you! Please join us again.
Nice room and fine food, but be prepared to wait and wait and wait.
Not as good as it used to be. Wine prices too high and food is good, but a bit too pricey. Mendocino is not San Francisco.
Thanks for your review. We appreciate the feedback and strive for consistency in good, mindfully-sourced food! Local, organic ingredients are more costly and the prices are reflected in our menu. If you are looking for more affordable options, we offer these, too! Next time try dining in our cafe and bar. Here we showcase more affordably priced items with the same quality ingredients, such as our Ford Ranch grass fed beef burger or our famous Mary's free range fried chicken.
One of us was sick all night after eating there. Halibut special was tasteless. It had a decent sear on outside, but was otherwise without flavor or interest. Greens side dish served as substitute for mashed potatoes was terrible. Had odd chunks of unidentifiable meat in it and was very disappointing. The mango sorbet was tasteless. Asked for replacement of vanilla ice cream because you can’t ruin that. Was very sweet and not very creamy. Our other party had the pork chop entree which was unremarkable. Dessert was supposed to b l chocolate salted caramel swirl ice cream. The salted caramel was nowhere to be found. The ice cream was mostly chocolate. While the service was attentive, unfortunately it could not make up for the poor food. We would not recommend MacCallum House restaurant to others and do not plan to return ourselves.
So sorry to hear your experience was not up to par. We strive to serve delicious and creative food, showcasing the best in the area. Had we known when you were dining that your meal was not to your liking, we would have been happy to remedy the situation. It is our goal to provide an enchanting and satisfying experience. I will speak to my chef about the bacon in the collared greens side, and check in on the recipes of our house made ice creams. Thank you for sharing your experience.
Some dishes very good but overall for price and expectations a bit disappointing. Duck breast very good but served with very over salted vegetables. Steak very tasty but cooked more than requested. Cream brûlée very good but served in large shallow dish so proportions of cream base to brûlée topping off.
Ambiance was lovely and service was good with attentive staff.
Some of the best lamb chops I’ve ever had. My wife got the duck, which was also delicious. Wait staff was phenomenal and timing on everything coming from the kitchen was spot on.
They are incredible Lamb Chops! Look forward to tantalizing your taste buds again soon.
2nd time there in two years, so somewhat limited. We enjoyed the first time, one year ago. This time not so much. First the server was not the most friendly or helpful. She seemed like she was having a bad night, but there wasn't that many people in there. So she set the tone for the meal. My pork chop was pretty under cooked in places, polenta tasted like boxed cheese flavor, and dessert average at best. My wive's steak was also under cooked and really have no flavor, though it was tender. Overall just an average meal.
It is disappointing to hear you had a less-than-stellar experience dining with us. We strive to deliver delicious, creative dishes made from the freshest, local ingredients, and we are always happy to take back a disappointing plate and make it right on the spot. Please try us again!
Excellent food in a quaint setting and with very good service! 2 times here and we've been very satisfied both times!
Love to hear it! Please come for visit number 3 and more!
Quite pricy for the average service and below average food quality. Somewhat disappointing for such an iconic place
Hi Gary, sorry to hear you had a lackluster experience. Our food is sourced from the best, local producers, and our menu changes seasonally. We would love to win you over. Please try us again and discover for yourself why we are an iconic gem in Mendocino!
We were dining for my husband’s birthday weekend and unfortunately were placed in the dining room where every table had a baby.
Hi Nanci, so sorry you weren't sat in the best spot for the sophisticated evening you had planned. We do our best to take care of all our guests. We would love the opportunity to serve you better next time and are always happy to move you next time. Hope you come again!
Lovely overall experience!
Thanks for joining us! So pleased you enjoyed our restaurant. Please come back again soon.
We keep coming back, and they continue to be awesome!
What a treat for us! Please keep coming back and we will continue doing our part. Cheers to you, wonderful guest.
Very good. Quality service and food was good.
Appreciate your review. We aim to please! Warmly, The MacCallum House
The food was all amazingly bland and tasteless. All 4 dishes (Filet, salad, venison, pate) that were had were impossibly bland. It was as though the kitchen had no seasonings or spices. The meal was a huge disappointment.
So sorry to hear you didn't find your meal flavorful. This is not a comment we receive often. We pride ourselves on sourcing the freshest, local ingredients, and our CIA-trained chef aims to craft creative dishes with complimentary flavors highlighting the best of the season. We are always happy to send you out something else if a plate is not to your liking. Next time please let us know, and do give us another go! Warmly, The MacCallum House
It was a rainy night when we dined. We were seated in a room adjacent to the main dining room with the fireplace even though the fireplace dining room was almost empty. We asked to be seated near the fireplace and were accommodated. Our waiter was distracted, service was fair, even though the restaurant wasn't busy. The waiter servicing the table next to us was VERY LOUD, irritating. Food was good. Pork chop entree was outstanding although I missed the mashed potatoes is used to come with. Dessert, chocolate almond torte, was under-whelming. Could have used a dollop of whipped cream or some raspberries on the side, something to jazz it up a bit, it was tasty but plain.
Wonderful experience. Our waitress, Julie, was wonderful and treated us like we were her only patrons. It was a wonderful dinner in a beautiful setting.
Outstanding service. Excellent dining. Venison medallions were the best I’ve had. Cozy dining in a lovely town.
A charming restaurant in a historic Victorian mansion. Great menu. Had the medallions of venison from New Zealand. An excellent choice. Great wood-burning fireplace in one of the rooms. Well worth a visit while in Mendocino.
Fantastic food and service! Definitely will return!
Food was excellent- bananas foster pancakes- we brought a bottle of Iron Horse bubbly. Service was excellent- thank you, Marisol!
This is obviously the "status" restaurant in Mendocino, and it's maybe unfair to judge a place by its vibe on a 3 day weekend. That said, you CAN judge a place by its vibe under stress. The staff were unfriendly when we walked in, blaming all kinds of things on OpenTable's rez system screwing them. We didn't know what they were talking about, nor did we care - we couldn't have been more relaxed about it but were really taken aback by how grumpy the host was. Whatever - we ended up at a bar table in short order, which was what we wanted in the first place, and the food was fantastic...but the waiters were really sad and perfunctory. It seemed like someone had died, it was really something else. This seems like a great place to visit on a quiet Tuesday night. Leave them alone on 3 day weekends, they clearly can't handle it.
Friendly wait staff. Dinner and cocktails great. Nice menu selection. Quaint atmosphere; however, halfway through dinner a foursome were seated next to us that elevated the noise in the room and continued to do so with each wine and whiskey pairing they received. Not McCallum House fault but put a little damper on what started as a romantic dinner.
Poor service from the moment we walked in and waited for the hostess , waiter did not come around to our table to take drink order while serving everyone around us , food was good , too expensive for what we got
The steak was excellent - such a savory combination of flavors. There was music in the anteroom that was much too loud for this quiet restaurant - and a table of very loud folks. After both the music and the loud people were gone it was perfect.
We're been coming to Mendocino for over 38 years, and this past month, we were there for a month. We had drinks at MacCallum House on three different evenings, and they were great. We had dinner twice. This last dinner experience was very, very disappointing. We both had steak, and even though the flavor was wonderful, both were served lukewarm. We asked to have them warmed. When they returned, they weren't hot, but mildly warmer. We didn't complain, because by this time the rest of the plate was cold. We were surprised the steaks weren't served on hot plates, especially in a cold dining room on a cold night. Also, the portions were not commensurate with the price. Overall, we were very disappointed.
Great food and service. We had a great time and the wait staff were exceptional.
Unfortunately we arrived on a very busy night/ community fundraiser so our service was not ideal, however, the food was truly wonderful. We waited more than 40 min to have drink orders taken and even longer for the bottle of wine to arrive but it was well worth the wait! As the crowded dining room cleared, the service became more attentive and personalized, our wine choice was spot on and the appetizers and entrees were perfection. We had foie gras, duck and the pork chop. The pork chop was outstanding. Flavorful moist and just perfect. The duck had a nicely crisped skin but lacked a little flavor. It was cooked perfectly and paired with a warm spinach, beet, blue cheese, bacon that was perfect and unique. The duck didn’t need more flavor. The bacon was more like a pork belly sans the fatty part. Omg. Yum! We would definitely eat here again and recommend the food for certain. Sometimes timing (off season and local fundraiser) just inhibit the perfect experience but the food was perfect anyway
