the quality of the food was outstanding, great presentation, best meal we had in Mendocino . best banana split . we even went back on a second night just for the banana split
The food was excellent. The waiter was pleasant and professional. The room was a very comfortable with a nice fireplace.
We were celebrating our anniversary over the past weekend. The place is lovely and charming; the waiter attentive but not overly. The meal started off really well with delicious cocktails, oysters were fresh and the jalapeño mignonette surprisingly good and not overwhelming, beet salad with frisee, candied pecans, tangerine reduction, and Humboldt Fog Blue Cheese was very tasty but my husband would rather have had the cheese crumbled instead of a small wedge, my gnocchi appetizer was tender and cooked to perfection. The problem came with the main course. My husband's entire plate was cold (steak, brussel sprouts, potato gratin) as though it was pre-made and left to sit out. My rabbit ragout was tasty but the polenta was really boring and tasted more like flour than grain. We ordered dessert and coffee (brought out cold which they fixed and removed from the bill). The banana split with three different house made ice creams, toasted hazelnuts, and chocolate sauce was very good and I loved the poppy seed beignet with lemon curd and candied zest. Would definitely eat here again for a light meal: ambiance, drinks, apps, dessert - but would skip the main course.
Best fried chicken! Yum!!!
Great drinks, food and service.
Meal was outstanding! Very tasty. Go for the prefix and wine pairing. Epic meal.
One of the best restaurants in Mendocino for a bit of upscale dining. Was there on a Friday evening when a local jazz duo was performing. Enjoyable, pleasant music while you dine. Great experience.
I'd heard about MacCallum House for years and impulsively decided to take advantage of an available booking. I tried one of the daily specials, and my husband tried one of the standing menu options, and both were expertly prepared. Service was friendly and attentive without being obtrusive.
The "sequencing" of the dinner, which can be an issue for so many restaurants, was also perfect. Our courses seemed to arrive at the table at the right time - but we never felt as if dishes were piled on top of one another, or that we were being hurried through our meal. I note that our reservation was on a Friday evening (and holiday weekend), so kudos to the entire staff for providing a quality dining experience.
We're been here several times, and always enjoyed the ambience and food. This time, one dinner was outstanding: the steak; the other was a miss: risotto patties.
The patties were gray, with dry, crusty tops. They were dry, tasteless, and unappealing. The greens were an odd combination, again with little flavor, and little cooking.
It was the night after Valentine's day; I wonder if the kitchen staff was worn out.
Our waiter was outstanding; very attentive, pleasant.
The menu is not extensive but varied. The wine list is extensive. Very good service and excellent meal.
After waiting several minutes for the “host” to finish a conversation with some regulars, we were approached as if we didn’t have a reservation. Worse yet, we were staying at the inn. Server described the soup as potato leek, but we could taste neither potato or leek. Fish special (scallops) were delicious, but over-priced.
We just love this place. We just took my mother there for her birthday and had a lovely meal, great service, all in a delightful setting.
Quite, prompt service, food very good
Poor menu selection, waitress was brisk even though there were only two other patrons, food was subpar and overpriced for quality.
Best duck breast of my life! My friends rabbit was noteworthy as well. Quiet, wonderful place in Mendocino suitable for romantic couples, groups of friends who want to be able to talk and even my 87 year old friend who wanted a special nite out. Not cheap.
Great food and the staff were very attentive. Will definitely go back.
EARLY TURN OF THE CENTURY FEEL, FRIENDLY PROFESSION STAFF.
FOOD WAS FABULOUS. A MUST VISIT WHEN ON THE COAST.
Excellent food in a unique setting.
The daily specials were prepared masterfully. We couldn’t have asked for a better meal and a cozier setting
Came here for the first time and had an excellent meal. Teelo had the duck and it was absolutely the best duck either one of us have ever had anywhere. Very plump, not fatty, wonderful sauce, just wonderful. Jaylo had the beef and it was also outstanding. We came here because our usual favorite restaurants in town were closed for a January break. Glad that happened, from now on, every trip up here we will come here to eat.
The only issue was the restaurant was really busy, busier than what they were expecting I believe as the waiter said how busy it had been, and it was obvious he was working hard, but I think they could have used at least another waiter, and maybe even a water/drink helper as keeping the water glasses full was an issue. Next year, on MLK weekend, they should plan for a busy weekend, especially if 2 other restaurants are closed again.
The food was excellent as well as the service. I would highly recommend giving this restaurant a try.
We enjoyed both our meal and the lovely setting in this historic house. My gnocchi was flavorful and creative, and my husband enjoyed his venison.
Delicious food and highly competent, professional service.
Cozy rustic setting. Amazing food but small portions. Friendly attentive service. Expensive but worth the experience. I'll come again and highly recommend.
Had a very nice Christmas morning breakfast here. The view is breathtaking from the dining area. Very friendly staff.
This was not our first dining experience at McCullen House. The food is always 5 star and the service is excellent. This is our favorite restaurant when visiting Mendocino
The venison was beautifully prepared. The service was friendly. A delightful place to enjoy dinner.
Excellent! The food was amazing, our server was attentive yet not obtrusive -- but the real star was the food! So good! Especially the cheese for dessert, what a treat.
Absolutely love splurging on the seasonal tasting menu with wine pairing. Fabulous place to stay and dine on the beautiful Northern California coast.
The Leek soup was very unexciting. The bleu cheese salad was also nothing to write home about. The scallops were delicious and so were the cocktails. The ambiance was ok but the large table we were sat nexto were arguing making for an unsavory meal. Did I mention the cocktails were delicious? All in all, for the price, I didn’t feel like it was worth it.
High quality food overall. This includes both breakfast and dinner options.
Lovely meal, gracious service--wish I could go there every week.
Always a treat! From the time you are welcomed in until you are leaving with a contented palette and satisfying feeling in your belly- it is a class act for the entire experience!
Great pork chops! Best I ever ate!! Ambiance was great for s date.
Lovely food and beautiful setting but unfortunately we felt rushed to leave the table. We had a reservation at seven pm and at 8.15 they lit up the room and it felt like the staff wanted to pack up to go home. May have been unlucky, but it didn't live up to the expectations from previous reviews I'd read.
So much potential at this place that it is difficult to see it fall just a bit short in places. We were guests at the Inn and had both stayed and dined at Macallum House in years past so we were eager to see what the restaurant was offering on our return. Let me say that the breakfasts, which are included in the hotel stay, are OUTSTANDING. We ordered the cornmeal pancakes and the eggs Benedict and were blown away by the quality. We wanted to order them again immediately, but stayed ourselves till the next day when we had a repeat experience. Definitely worth a visit for the breakfasts even if you are staying elsewhere. One big plus is the option of dining on the lovely wrap around porch with views of the ocean, which also allowed us the option of dining with our dogs. I don't believe they serve dinner out there (usually too cold to be comfortable anyway), but definitely a plus for those traveling with their pets.
I wish I could be as effusive about dinner, but it was just OKAY for us. Server was cordial if a bit laid back, and he didn't seem to be too familiar with the "new" Autumn menu. The Chanterelle flatbread we ordered as a starter was just okay nothing really memorable. The duck entree was the one thing the server seemed somewhat enthusiastic about, so I went with that while my companion ordered the market seafood special, which I believe was halibut with a saffron risotto. The duck was great, well cooked and well seasoned accompanied by flavorful sides, and was a very healthy portion. If anything I think they could cut the portion back a bit and charge a bit less, as it was just under $40. The fish on the other hand was a MAJOR disappointment. The flavor combinations just didn't work, it was poorly seasoned and the Saffron Risotto just wasn't good. Thankfully that healthy portion of duck meat came in handy as that basically fed the two of us. Overall we expected more at these price points, though what they do well they do very well.
Fabulous food ... among the best chicken I've had in years!
Excellent in every way. One of the finest meals I have had on the North Coast.
Gorgeous historic house, nice view of the ocean from the front porch. Cozy dining room with a fireplace, very romantic, easy to have an intimate conversation. Service for dinner was perfect. I loved the pork chop, my husband thought the filet was just o.k. Sides were delicious. Nice cozy bar next door with great cocktails and quiet live music later in the evening. I appreciated the great wine list. Overall, we had a fantastic dinner celebrating our anniversary. Highly recommend it!
Food excellent, but where they seat you is critical. Front room had lovely flickering fireplace, romantic lighting and empty tables. We were seated in the back room with full tables garish lighting, fireplace but no fire, with one side of the table looking into a darkened storage room. Waiter began by apologizing for not yet knowing the new menu, which was an understatement. We ordered pate, assured it had minimal garlic, which makes sick. True, but the pate toasts were made from garlic bread and our main course vegetables had been given the garlic swirl treatment. The point is they're phoning it in. Bar by contrast has great xocktails and service and ambiance. But tiny.
Food was good. Being from San Francisco, I wasn't wowed.... but the biggest disappointment is that 1) we were staying there on our 10-year Anniversart and there was NO attempt to acknowledge that, even though I noted it... and 2) we were actually married at MacCallum house 10-years ago, and the hotel didn't make any attempt to make it memorable; no bottle of wine or champagne in the room, no rose petals or ANYTHING to make it special.....very sad that the restaurant/hotel has taken out all the sentimentality.... seems contrary to what a sleepy Victorian would represent, and contrary to why we've been such loyal patrons after all these years.
