Very good meal. Recommend.
I’m a member of @slowfoodwhidbey. I usually go to Cafe Beaujolais and decided to try something new-Farm to Table.
I was licking my plate. This meal was as delicious as anything in France, but local and excellent! How proud I am to be a former Californian and see one of my favorite places-Mendocino doing top quality local organic ingredients.
Charming, delicious, and high quality - truly a neighborhood gem in a genuinely beautiful neighborhood.
I come up to Mendocino 3-4 times a year and spend several nights going through the new seasonal menu. Certain favorites like the duck and the steak are always a good bet, but the market seafood and the delightful appetizers are a treat as well. New dishes are also delicious, with complex flavors that take their time appearing and mixing in your mouth. A great value for high quality food and a fun drive to a town which has a charm that is somehow greater than the sum of its parts.
Excellent food with complex, fine-dining flavors that delight and surprise, along with stable favorites, an amazing atmosphere, and delicious cocktails. A true neighborhood gem and the quality matches up to the prices. Locally grown or caught, some right on the property. Try the different elements of a dish separately and together and you'll see that they harmonize beautifully.
My husband and I were visiting Mendocino and got a recommendation to eat here. MacCallum house did not disappoint! We both had drinks (I had a carafe of the Viognier and my husband had two different cocktails) which were all good! We shared the watercress salad which we gobbled up along with the fresh bread. Then for our entrees he ordered the bavette steak while I had the duck. The duck was so delicious!!! The sauce was amazing and it was cooked to perfection. There was also a live band playing when we got there, although they finished shortly after since we had a late seating. And our server and busboy were so attentive - my husband finished his water glass 3 times and magically it would be full before he went to take another sip, although we never saw anyone come to fill it! Overall, we loved the meal, and it would be perfect if it was a little less expensive. But all in all, a fantastic date night dinner!
Our evening at The MacCallum House was delightful! The food was good, Julie was marvelous! We ran into friends and it was good to see our favorite servers and staff, Russell, Sonja and Molly. We always tell our friends how great it is.
Beautiful setting. Amazing food. Great drinks.
Disappointing. Mediocre food, over-friendly waiter.
My husband and I went here for a quiet dinner together. Unfortunately, the waiter decided to make himself a part of the evening. He kept bounding across the room and declaring us "friends"; at one point he interrupted our conversation to ask if we knew the title of the song playing, then told us, and told us it was his favorite and he owned four copies. He also forgot our orders (we declined two spoons for a single soup order) and didn't coordinate with the other waiters. This was especially annoying when we declined dessert and asked for the check with Waiter B, and then Waiter A came exuberantly over and said "I KNOW you want dessert," waving the open menu at us.
My husband and I both ordered the bavette steak, rare. When it came, it tasted stewed; there was no char or crust on the outside, and the texture was the same inside and out. It didn't have a strong meaty flavor, which I'd expect from a bavette steak; there was also no flavor of garlic or pepper. There was a pool of sauce with horseradish shreds on the side. It, too, was surprisingly flavorless. I only ate half of mine. I didn't want more.
When I go out to eat, I want food better than my husband or I could cook ourselves. I also want privacy. The MacCallum House let me down on both counts.
Hi Elizabeth, Thank you for your feedback. I am so sorry to hear your experience was not what you intended. I will indeed speak to our service staff and remind them to gauge the demeanor of their tables. While some diners do like a lot of interaction with their server, we of course understand that others prefer to be left to the privacy of their own company and to enjoy the romantic ambience of the dining room. Hope you give our us an opportunity to wow you in the future.
Everyone Dish was exceptional. I have made the dishes we ordered but this preparation was levels above. I have no idea how they did it. A little pricy but worth it for a splurge. Service good if a bit frantic. Overall amazing.
Tasting course was divine. It was the perfect anniversary dinner. Come hungry. It did not disappoint.
Excellent service and delicious gourmet food very well prepared and presented. As B&B guests, we enjoyed both dinner and breakfast there. A very pleasant place to sit in the indoor fire-place lounge or on the open air veranda to enjoy the view while tasting excellent bar drinks and local Anderson Valley wines. In our opinion MacCallum House is both the best B&B and restaurant in Mendocino!
The side salads were great, the special cocktail was lovely, the lamb special entree was just ok.
What an amazing dinner. Quiet night on a Tuesday, probably 6 tables of 12 were occupied. Our waitress Julie was great and the food just outstanding. Highly recommend.
I have food allergies and the chef always makes sure that I get something delicious for dinner. The bartenders are fabulous! They put roses in our martinis for a girls' night!
MacCallum House is a long term staple of the Mendocino Coast lodging scene. It has never failed to deliver. The lodging is comfortable, quaint, and varied from king suites to tiny garrets. Located in the heart of the city it is perfect for events such as our recent trip to the annual music festival. Food is superb as was the service and wine list. Breakfast is always included and from the regular menu. Yes! Go there.
A charming restaurant in the heart of Mendocino. Try to get a table on the patio side if the weather is good. Great ocean view with delicious food. Recommended!
Fabulous dinner at MacCallum house, occasion celebrating a birthday; got hammered -- excellent wine, excellent cocktails, super great service -- ordered fried chicken (only dark meat available -- whaaat?? Birthday girl doesn't eat chicken legs and chicken thighs) so she had another cocktail, custom made, new invention really ... Not sure if we were too loud or drunk, but we made it home without a problem ... Love MacCallum house, such a great ambience/lovely old house;
This was a surprise birthday gift to me from my wife. We now plan to make this an annual visit!
We visit this area about twice a year and always try to visit McCallum House. This year they were especially good. My husband had the duck chili verde and I had the halibut. Both were excellent. Their house-made ice cream was delicious.
One of our favorite places to eat in Mendocino. Chef Alan Kantor creates unique flavors from local fresh ingredients. The staff is extremely attentive.
It was, as always, amazing. We got married there and would recommend that in a heartbeat and go back every chance we get!
We've dined at McCallum House several times in the past few years and our experience has been outstanding.
For our dinner this past week:
Cocktails were outstanding. The current bartender has his act together! Perfect!
Dinner- in particular, compared to the past, I would say the meal was "OK"...not amazing, but not bad either. Dessert was excellent...entrees and starters were good, but not WOW (as in the past).
Ribs were poor quality, tasteless. Tomato soup ok.
Scallops ok. Not up to prior visits
Hi Bill, Happy to hear you have had a fantastic experience in the past with us, and sorry to hear your meal was not up to par. We are always happy to replace a dish that is not to your liking. Hope we can garner another return and impress you as in the past!
Wonderful vegetarian options. Great service from Julie and the entire staff.
Charming setting and a very nice meal, but service was impersonal.
From the perfect lawn to exquisite drinks on the porch on through dinner and the decadent creme brulee dessert, everything was ridiculously amazing! Every single thing was on point.
Great food and service. Did the paired meal.
Came for a nice, romantic dinner and this place did not disappoint. Server was delightful and knowledgeable. Gnocchi was a dream. Had the venison and lamb chops. The lamb was amazing! The venison dish wasn't balanced but still yummy. Had to leave early because I got a migraine halfway through dinner, the lamb was just as good the next day! We'll be back when we're in town!
Great service and food at a reasonable price. Good sized portions also.
Wonderful restaurant! Delicious! Can’t wait to go back! Our waiter was very
Nice and helpful. He didn’t have enough help or he was just mixed up that night. He was still great and we didn’t mind waiting. You need to go!
Happy to have you! Please join us again.
Nice room and fine food, but be prepared to wait and wait and wait.
Not as good as it used to be. Wine prices too high and food is good, but a bit too pricey. Mendocino is not San Francisco.
Thanks for your review. We appreciate the feedback and strive for consistency in good, mindfully-sourced food! Local, organic ingredients are more costly and the prices are reflected in our menu. If you are looking for more affordable options, we offer these, too! Next time try dining in our cafe and bar. Here we showcase more affordably priced items with the same quality ingredients, such as our Ford Ranch grass fed beef burger or our famous Mary's free range fried chicken.
One of us was sick all night after eating there. Halibut special was tasteless. It had a decent sear on outside, but was otherwise without flavor or interest. Greens side dish served as substitute for mashed potatoes was terrible. Had odd chunks of unidentifiable meat in it and was very disappointing. The mango sorbet was tasteless. Asked for replacement of vanilla ice cream because you can’t ruin that. Was very sweet and not very creamy. Our other party had the pork chop entree which was unremarkable. Dessert was supposed to b l chocolate salted caramel swirl ice cream. The salted caramel was nowhere to be found. The ice cream was mostly chocolate. While the service was attentive, unfortunately it could not make up for the poor food. We would not recommend MacCallum House restaurant to others and do not plan to return ourselves.
So sorry to hear your experience was not up to par. We strive to serve delicious and creative food, showcasing the best in the area. Had we known when you were dining that your meal was not to your liking, we would have been happy to remedy the situation. It is our goal to provide an enchanting and satisfying experience. I will speak to my chef about the bacon in the collared greens side, and check in on the recipes of our house made ice creams. Thank you for sharing your experience.
Some dishes very good but overall for price and expectations a bit disappointing. Duck breast very good but served with very over salted vegetables. Steak very tasty but cooked more than requested. Cream brûlée very good but served in large shallow dish so proportions of cream base to brûlée topping off.
Ambiance was lovely and service was good with attentive staff.
Some of the best lamb chops I’ve ever had. My wife got the duck, which was also delicious. Wait staff was phenomenal and timing on everything coming from the kitchen was spot on.
They are incredible Lamb Chops! Look forward to tantalizing your taste buds again soon.
2nd time there in two years, so somewhat limited. We enjoyed the first time, one year ago. This time not so much. First the server was not the most friendly or helpful. She seemed like she was having a bad night, but there wasn't that many people in there. So she set the tone for the meal. My pork chop was pretty under cooked in places, polenta tasted like boxed cheese flavor, and dessert average at best. My wive's steak was also under cooked and really have no flavor, though it was tender. Overall just an average meal.
It is disappointing to hear you had a less-than-stellar experience dining with us. We strive to deliver delicious, creative dishes made from the freshest, local ingredients, and we are always happy to take back a disappointing plate and make it right on the spot. Please try us again!
Excellent food in a quaint setting and with very good service! 2 times here and we've been very satisfied both times!
Love to hear it! Please come for visit number 3 and more!
Quite pricy for the average service and below average food quality. Somewhat disappointing for such an iconic place
Hi Gary, sorry to hear you had a lackluster experience. Our food is sourced from the best, local producers, and our menu changes seasonally. We would love to win you over. Please try us again and discover for yourself why we are an iconic gem in Mendocino!
We were dining for my husband’s birthday weekend and unfortunately were placed in the dining room where every table had a baby.
Hi Nanci, so sorry you weren't sat in the best spot for the sophisticated evening you had planned. We do our best to take care of all our guests. We would love the opportunity to serve you better next time and are always happy to move you next time. Hope you come again!
