Macao Trading Co. covers two floors offering both a spacious dining room upstairs and an intimate lounge downstairs. The cuisine represents the blend of Chinese and Portuguese cuisines found in the once independent colony of its namesake. Located on Church St, at the edge of Tribeca, Macao’s décor is a dramatic composition of lighting, relics and industrial iron work. The high ceilings and tucked away location provide a fitting setting for the restaurant’s 1940s portside warehouse feel, recalling the adventure of Macao’s "red lantern district."

We loved the lobster noodles. Massive pieces of lobster parsed throughout with two tails on top! The dumplings were also delicious, and I’m still thinking about the craft cocktails.
Pro tip: make a reservation! You’re going to wait regardless. The venue is small and tables are close together, so best for a small group or date. Definitely a scene!
Disappointing as the premise (retro Macao) seemed so intriguing. Food was mediocre and overpriced for the quality; wine list uninspired. Noise level was deafening (but perhaps that's what people go there for?). Service indifferent at best. So, tried it once, but given all the amazing culinary options available in Manhattan, will opt for trying elsewhere next time i get the Retro bug.
I do not recommend this restaurant. If you want to have a drink at the bar before dinner, do not hesitate to sit at the bar and not in front, otherwise you will do your service yourself ... at 9 dollars a beer I would have preferred to be served. Then we went down for dinner in the downstairs room. We were placed on the way, table for two very tiny and uncomfortable chairs. The floor was very sticky... We hesitated to stay but tiredness and hunger we stayed. And I ordered a lobster noodles at 37 dollars and the lobster was ok but noodles too spicy! an horror. My friend's dish was a fried whole fish full of bones! In short I will not come back and I think it's not because it's new york full of tourists, that restaurants should not make any effort.
I think the food is over-priced and not super authentic to either Portugal or China (which is understandable for fusion food nowadays). Ambiance is dark but decent. Limited menu options if you are sticking to a budget. The quality of food nor the price made this place shine, I probably won't be back for a while.
The food was amazing but our table was a party of five. When the dinner was over and I asked for the check, the waiter brought the charge slips only without the itemized copy. When I did the math in my head I realized the waiter added 20% gratuity and didn't want me to realize it when signing the check. I called out the waiter and addressed my concern. Waiter tried to say he thought the table was a party of six. This is a shady technique to be double tipped. I hope management is aware that the waitstaff try this. I have lived in NYC for 20 years so didn't fall victim to suck trickery. A pity the waitstaff would highjack what would have been a beautiful dinner.
We were very excited about our dinner at the Macao Trading Company. The ambience, the decor and the vibe of the place is amazing! The cocktails were pretty awesome too- very well balanced and unique. Love the names and personally recommend getting 'Ginger Lynn'. The menu describes the dishes in great detail and is very tempting, but the dishes fail to deliver on the flavors and tastes. The baby back ribs were nice, but you'd find the same stuff in any fusion asian restaurant! Frankly, I was expecting more from the food. The servers were friendly and eager (too eager at some points!!) to help us have a great experience. It turned out to be a fun night over all. Just wish the food hit the spot!
The Kale And Chicory Salad with asian pear, toasted hazelnuts, ricotta salata was memorable. The portion was generous. The frican Chicken piri piri, ginger sesame slaw and peanut curry sauce was also a winner. The octopus was delicious but a small portion. The atmosphere and service were both very good. I recommend this restaurant in Tribeca.
Meh... used to be special, but hasn't kept inventing.

Mushroom fritters - okay
Fried rice shrimp and Bacon - not entirely unimgainanative, but not really that special at $15
Steamed fish - should have been great, but was overdone and unflavorful. For $35 you've got to get this right all the time
Service seemed to be there when not wanted, and gone when needed e.g. Dropped off the food - no serving untensils and then gone for 5 minutes, but cleaned plates immediately after finishing making us feel like they wanted us out of the half filled restaurant.
Speaking of untensils, in Asia they either use bowls for rice (Macao gives you small plates) or a spoon you can eat rice off a plate (Macao gives you a fork knife and chopsticks)
So some big misses in service combined with mediocre food/menu = meh
We had an amazing dinner the other night at Macao. Frannie was our waitress, and she was FANTASTIC. Extremely knowledgable, fun, helpful, guided us in the right direction with our food choices. She took very good care of us, some of the best service I have received in a long time. Having been in the hospitality industry for 10+ years, Frannie really wowed us. The food was delicious, the atmosphere was very lively & fun, overall just a great time! Afterwards we went downstairs, and loved the DJ; he knew exactly what he was doing, and never was there a lull in the music that stopped the energy from staying high and keeping everyone dancing. Bartenders were fast, friendly, and ON IT. Great, great job! Thank you!
