I lived in Hong Kong for 8 years and visited Macao about 30 times. There is nothing about the menu that evokes Macao. That's OK but the service was about as bad as it can get. Our server was drinking in full view. That's ok too but it was about 8:30 pm. The manager did comp us on two desserts because he recognized the problem which was appreciated. Food was OK but expensive. The $110 Taipa Steamboat "for the table" was essentially a paella with Thai rice flavored with green. Should have been about $50 even in New York.
Loved our dinner and the server was so warm and friendly. Only complaint was it was very dark going down the stairs to be seated. Otherwise truly enjoyed the experience.
The food was very creative and very satisfying. Our main server was very professionally and knowledgeable. However, at the end of our meal, our main server had left and we had to wait a long time to find our server for the check. The music, every exciting, but hard to have a conversation.
Not worth the price. Lobster noodles for $42 with two small tails and over spiced, no thanks.... smarmy host and hostess contributed to the disappointment
Ambience excellent, like a movie set..very cozy..good albeit expensive and still small-ish drinks..went there for birthday because we liked the drinks before and also the option downstairs(after 11:00)for dancing..however the real letdown was the food..really overprized and actually not well executed..I am surprised they continue to get away with it..go for drinks for the ambiente and move on to proper food in the neighborhood..come back for dancing later..
Food not worth it. It’s good but way too expensive for what it is.
Interesting menu and nicely designed interior. Our food was well-prepared and the prices were high, but to be expected for the location and the overall "experience". What I didn't like was my $18 drink which was basically a shot plus some bitters and other flavors in an 8 ounce glass filled with crushed ice. Spare me the hand-crafted excuse for the price. Go to NOLA. Great drinks wherever you go at half the price. Also, the service dramatically fell off after we received our main courses. We were her only table. I went looking for her after we sat with dirty dishes for a good 20 minutes. I found her a few tables away sitting with the host on her phone doing God knows what. Slow night? At least set a timer to remind you to get up and check your tables.
A very creative place with a historical concept! Great food and great cocktails! Service was really good!
Food was great, drinks not so much. They also use a bunch of different unique alcohol flavors and ingredients to Make the drinks different. It was a big fail, there were just too much going on in the drinks.
One of our party is vegetarian, leaning vegan. The options were terrific and we all enjoyed sharing vegetarian/vegan appetizers, especially the dumplings. YUM. The African Chicken has spot on (and I've had good peri peri chicken in Zimbabwe), the whole crispy fish was delicious and fileted at the table for me. Someone else reviewing had commented on excess salt in food. I would say it was salted, but that is the style--I've eaten a lot of Portuguese salted cod. The specialty cocktail list was creative and I was pleased with my choice. The desserts were memorable--I am going to be dreaming about the panna cotta. I will be back many times if just for that!
We found the service exceptional. We had many questions about the menu (hard to choose as everything was appealing) and our waiter was attentive and offered thoughtful and helpful suggestions that were appreciated.
Our only annoyance was a woman at the next table/booth whose loud cell phone went off maybe 4 times during dinner--and she answered it much to the chagrin of her tablemates. No acccounting for others' bad manners! That said, even with the low lighting, this is not a place I'd suggest for a quiet, romantic a tete-a-tete, though if you are seated in a booth you could probably ignore the rest of the guests if you had a mind to.
Decent food but over-priced, ambiance and bar drinks are amazing.
Macao is a great find on Church St. near the Soho Rep theater and convenient to all the subways! Had a great pre theater dinner. Just delicious and the service was excellent
My bill was not charged correctly. Completely packed!
OK, so the decor is slightly kitschy -- behind the hard-to-spot door is a New York set designer's idea of prewar Macao -- and the noise level is a bit high for my taste, especially on nights when they bring in live music. But the food is consistently inventive and delicious (the Portuguese-style "doughnuts" on the dessert menu are fabulous), the service is friendly and reasonably prompt, and the cocktail menu is better than most. If you are a fan of Asian-fusion food (the menu draws from Chinese and Portuguese traditions but I am pretty such that neither your Chinese grandmother nor your Portuguese grandmother would recognize most of the dishes on the menu), this cozy Tribeca hideaway should suit.
Bartender and drinks were great. Neat place. Ribs were good.
Fabulous dumplings, salads were stunning and all round great experience!
Wonderful spot in Soho!
The food was inconsistent. The crispy fish was great, the lobster noodles were way too spicy, hard to eat them. The appetizers were very small portions, $15 for dumplings, only 5 small ones on a plate. It was fun to try once, wouldn’t return.
Food is outstanding. Staff and service are mediocre at best. Host and waitress were not terribly interested in doing more than the bare minimum. Too bad, because the place has everything going for it otherwise.
Awesome food. Superb cocktails. Come before 8 if you want to talk. Or after if you want "energetic".
Always a great meal and great drinks. Hopping bar scene full of beautiful people.
The lobster noodles are ultra delicious.
Excellent food, cool atmosphere
Great people, food, drinks and overall comfort level.
Good place. Good service. But way way too loud. I was expecting a more upscale place. The bar is full of early 20s kids who were way wasted at 11PM. Food is just okay. The kale salad was great.
Great food and drink! Rib appetizer was amazing
Fun "theme" restaurant with a noisy bar scene. I ordered the whole fried fish. The dish was tasty, and at $38, quite pricey. The one thing we were left wanting from the restaurant — more small plates to enjoy with drinks. There are just few appetizers, and these are small and expensive.
Best restaurant in the city right now.
great food. Great cocktails. The decor was so fun. Highly recommend it.
GM (who greeted us) was annoyed and rude. Staff also seemed agitated. Other than that - good spot for a later grab and cocktails.
The host that was sitting us a snob. He looked dirty and unappealing.
Amazing food. Great setup. Can't go wrong.
Will return, but with a larger party to get a larger table. We ordered a lot of food this time around and bistro table for two made it really cumbersome. The service was excellent and staff incredible; would give the Ritz Carlton a run for its money in terms of customer service. Contributed to a great date.
One of my favorites in NYC...food, service, ambiance. The best!
I LOVE THIS PLACE!! The muscles, Lobster Noodles, Steamed Shrimp Dumplins, Whole Fish, African Chicken are to DIE FOR!! The entire menu is awesome!!
Awesome, live music and great vibe
Great food and drinks! Will def be back!
Beautiful cocktails to start
A perfect setting for our first formal meal as man and wife.
Food was outstanding, and surprisingly quick.
The Wagyu beef was extraordinary, service was meticulous from start to finish without being overbearing.
Hopefully we will be able to dine here again before we head back to the UK,
It was really great, the restaurant and bar are both set up nice and the staff is friendly. Food was good and didn't break the bank.
