The food was excellent, with homemade pasta ( I had the homemade lasagna; my wife had the lamb shank) and a good variety of dishes - nothing prefab. The service was great too. This is easily one of the best restaurants in the area.

My wife and I wanted Ethiopian food and saw this place online. We tried it and found it not very crowded for a Saturday night. The waiter and chef were very friendly and accommodating and food came out fast and hot. Beer was a bit warm but no problem. Only problem was the music was too loud. Otherwise great place and will go again.

I took my wife to Mazza29 for her birthday since we enjoyed our last visit to this fine Ethiopian restaurant in Gainesville. We were quickly seated at a quiet corner table. In a few moments, our waiter indicated that the chef/owner had a proposition for us. The chef then came to us, introduced himself, and indicated that he wanted to prepare us a special 5-course meal with paired wines in honor of my wife's birthday. We obliged with little hesitation. We were then treated to a fantastic selection of chef inspired, well prepared courses including stuffed meatballs, Lamb lollies, monkfish with spicy polenta, chicken supreme, and a chocolate truffle that was quite possibly the best dessert I've had in 10 years! All credit to Emmanuel. He seemed to enjoy the evening as much as we did by getting off the normal menu and preparing a few spur-of-the-moment dishes. The ambiance was very good and just what we were looking for - quiet, secluded, and comfortable. We took a star away from Service due to our waiter not paying us much attention in keeping our wine and water glasses filled. That aside, the meal - rather the experience, was delightful and was an incredible value. We strongly recommend trying Maza29. We will definitely be back with family and friends.

We visited Maaza29 and even though their expansion construction project is going on, the food was fantastic! I really like the offerings, the menu is robust enough to satisfy many palettes yet focused enough that the offerings were all very good to excellent. The menu just changed so I hope they update their online PDF, some things aren't available and the one super entree I had isn't on the website. You will note the site says Ethiopian Inspired. That's because the owner/chef's parents are Ethiopian and Italian, which makes for a wonderful dining experience! We started with the Sambusa, and a nice surprise was that we could mix/match two of the types (three are offered). Our choices included the Lentil and the Beef. We preferred the beef as it has the right flavor strength to stand up to being deep fried, the lentil was tasty however the deep fry process didn't quite match to lentils. Next time I want to try the Mesir as I do like lentils. :) Next was the entree serving, I had a new veal offering in a tomato based sauce which was tender and extremely flavorful. The sauce wasn't a typical tomato based one, the spice mixture made it a smooth yet full flavored accompaniment to the veal. My wife's beef entree was done to perfection as well, and the injera was a great balance with the meal. It all worked together well. For dessert we had choices that were from Italy, and we enjoyed a nice pistachio parfait and an amaretto based dessert that were great, I'd pace myself next time to ensure plenty of room for these tasty treats! The wine list was focused yet solid choices, so the evening or lunch will be a pleasant experience for sure. When the construction is done the Ambiance will score higher and the noise lower. Try it!

Friends and I really enjoy this restaurant, the staff is extremely friendly, and the food is fantastic. Not the best place for a quick bite, but if you have a no rush attitude, and are looking forward to spending a couple of hours enjoying the interaction with the staff and tasting some truly unique food, this is a fantastic find. The food is extremely flavorful, prepared fresh and not like any restaurant around. The owner Emanuel, is extremely friendly and more than happy to go out of the way to vary a dish for a customer. Offering to add or reduce spices / flavors to cater to a person's specific palate is almost unheard of these days. My girlfriend and I enjoyed Maaza 29 so much after the first time we went, we returned the next night and brought a couple of our close friends to enjoy the experience, again the service was excellent and the food was fantastic. Apparently the braised lamb shank is a specialty they prepare, they don't have it every night and there are only limited amounts available when they do. It was an outstanding dish; even a bartender from another restaurant had mentioned and highly praised it. If it is available, I highly recommend it. I think possibly the only drawback to the restaurant is that it is quite small, but that may also add something to the charm. Nonetheless, we have enjoyed Maaza 29 tremendously, and we will definitely be back.

My daughter and I had a great experience! They were out of a couple of items, but the waiter (who was very familiar with the menu and made suggestions) explained that they were in the middle of changing the menu which explained one item and the other was hard to get so they were seeking a new supplier. We had several appetizers, shared them, and all were tasty, authentic (some Ethiopian and some Italian!) And we enjoyed every last bite of each one - polpetti, lettuce wraps, sambusas, spicy shrimp - everything done perfectly and presented nicely with a variety of sauces. Bar drinks are nicely done, I enjoyed a key lime drink that was perfect to cool the Ethiopian spices that were flavorful but never crossed the line into being too spicy. The new menu is set to launch right around Easter, we overheard discussion about a risotto and a spicy polenta, but I hope they keep some of the Ethiopian dishes as that sets this place apart from so many others in the area. Delicious and we will be back!
