Romantic date night with husband before heading to the Lantern Theater. Very nice wine, and tasty fish. Also the live jazz in the bar was a lovely surprise! Kind of a hidden gem in this neighborhood.

What a pleasant surprise! We discovered this restaurant and bar on our walk to another spot a month or so ago! Stopped in for a drink at the bar, and decided to return for dinner on our next theatre venture! We just completed that visit (2/15) and realized that we had found a truly special place with great service, cocktails, and food!
Our server, Linna was also truly special, paying close attention to us throughout our visit! The daily special of beef lion with hummus and fresh baby carrots was from the genius mind of a most creative chef!
We, and many friends will visit many more times!

We went for Valentine's Day and had a wonderful meal all around. We had a silky tomato bisque, an oyster barley soup, one of the best salad courses ever for a house salad (the dressing was just absolutely delicious), and then we shared a whole Dorade fish, which was perfectly prepared, so flaky and delicious with a creamy oyster sauce. For dessert, I had the poached pears with a creme anglaise and my date had baked brie. What a meal! The dining room was abuzz all evening with happy, attentive waiters and we enjoyed the usual Wednesday perk of live jazz. All in all, it was truly a lovely evening all around. It was great to celebrate in a room that was filled with many happy diners. We will be back!

It was a small room with only tables for two - food was outstanding. Service was the best ever. Gave A red rose to my date at dinner’s end. It was a romantic setting with lights appropriately dimmed. Will go back soon!

M is very close to the Walnut Street Theatre. We have visited M three times previously and enjoyed our meals. The fourth was unfortunate. The waiter knocked a glass of water onto me. The restaurant was out of several dishes, appetizers and entrees, but the waiter was unaware of that fact and came back twice to change orders. When everything was sorted out, the only entree that seemed appealing was chicken. It was a bit dry. I enjoyed the tuna tartare but that was only dish that any of the four of us thought notable. Two of us found a white chocolate dessert inedible. The setting is cozy and not noisy.

First time for us and we were very pleased with the menu. It had variety and the pot pies were a treat. Gourmet pot pies...who would have thought? The wait staff was exceptional and there is easy parking right across the street. We'll be back.

Great restaurant. Third time there, all pre-Walnut Theatre outings. It was restaurant week, and found it curious to the special menu for Saturday night. We came especially for the short ribs which was not on the menu, but the chef accommodated us for a slightly higher charge. Food did not disappoint. We had the rabbit roulette which was excellent and a salad, followed by the ribs and the chicken. Ribs were boneless, but if there was a bone, they would have fallen off being so tender. And chicken was cooked well and moist. Everything was great. Was a bit surprised that there was an upcharge for an additional serving of bread, but I guess that is to keep people from over-ordering. This is a great find and only a block from the Walnut so as season ticket holders, it is becoming a go-to place for us.

We were running late due to traffic. Explained we had theater tickets and we need to be quick. At no time did we feel rushed. Waitress took care of everything and made sure we made it on time.

Visited M again to sample the menu under the new chef from Noord. I was not disappointed- had an excellent meal which was a great value given that it was restaurant week. Started with the potato leek soup which was delicious including a potato cake with caviar and sour cream on top. Entree was fisherman’s stew. The clams , mussels, shrimp, octopus and white fish were so incredibly fresh, plump and yummy in a barley broth. The barley was a little crunchy, a nice touch to the tasty broth. My husband I finished every morsel and every drop of the broth. My husband enjoyed his dessert: peanut butter mouse filled cream puffs. My dessert was less appealing: vegan cookies with raspberries. The pre dinnercocktail made with pear infused vodka was perfect.

Food in portion size and taste has improved much since Joncarl took over as chef. We dined in a private room with a fireplace. Warm and toasty and very quiet. Only another party of three. Had the tuna tartar app, husband had salad and friend had fried oysters. Main courses: Trout for husband and friend and I had seafood/spanish octopus dish. Trout was outstanding. Only down side was the $4.00 extra charge charge for additional bread which, under the circumstances, is chintzy and server said patrons who did not see it on menu balked when charged. Coffee and desert were find. Service was a bit slow but in these surroundings no one cared.

Two meals were from the restaurant week menu. Potato leek soup and chicken entree’s which were excellent. The third person ordered trout from regular menu and was said to be ‘the best trout in memory ‘. Very comfortable seating, excellent service, and overall did not disappoint. Also, had cocktails which were very good. Will return.

Very mixed. Nice ambiance, cozy dining room. Good noise level. But service was spotty (waiter never mentioned specials, left menus on table to sit for 15 minutes). We ate off restaurant week menu. Food was so-so. Disappointing because we had been a fan of Joncarl's cooking at Noord. It's two blocks away from us but not sure if we'd frequent much pro bay give it one more try. Based on our first meal, I wouldn't recommend to friends.

We went to M to take advantage of Restaurant week for a pre-theater dinner. It's a great location when going to the Walnut Street Theater. The food was well-prepared and the service was excellent. I'd passed by the restaurant for years and I'm glad I finally went. I would absolutely go again.

New chef left his skills at Noord or didn’t teach his new kitchen staff how to cook quality food. Over cooked, salt was the only thing to try to create flavor, and my rabbit appetizer tasted like tuna fish from a can. I will just stay at Noord.

We celebrated New Year’s Eve at the M Restaurant the Morris House Hotel, after having considered several different options. The event was more casual than we had anticipated, but we were welcomed warmly and the service was good (if a bit rushed, even though we had a later seating. The menu was limited (3 soups to choose from to start, a baby green salad, a choice of 5 entrees – we went with the veal osso buco, which was fabulous) and a selection of desserts. We did have a nice bottle of Spanish Garnatxa, which went well with the food. The hotel and restaurant are located in an original historic house; there is a fireplace burning; and it would have been romantic if it hadn’t been New Year’s Eve. It was very cold that night, and the staff kept going outside between the two restaurant sites (which are separated by the courtyard) – every time the door opened, the chilly air blew in. We were done and back in our hotel room before midnight, making it one of our simpler New Year’s Eves.

We've been to M Restaurant many times and choose it as something new to try for New Years Eve. It worked out quite well as it was a nice quiet dinner, which we were seeking. I'd recommend it as a great place for simply a drink at the bar or dining in any of the dining rooms. The menu was worth the value with unique items tailored for the New Year.

Back to Life. This neighborhood gem is back and hopefully to stay. We had dined here frequently years ago but found each time we visited the service and food just was not up to standards. Being fans of Joncarl Lachman we were excited to learn he was now executive chef. In its prime the atmosphere at M was quiet / stuffy and for the mature neighborhood folks. It needed to change as the neighborhood did. I think that change is finally starting. Lachman brings his talents from the kitchen and the front of the house with him. His great suçesss from NOORD will hopefully follow him to M. What a great dining experience last evening. Service and food was outstanding. Lachmans personality and talents are a much needed improvement and we will be sure to become regulars once again.

Dinner for two on a holiday weeknight. Had not been to M for a number of years. Place is still nice but kind of drab looking inside, BUT the food and wine is as good as any you will find anywhere else in the City. Nice surprise compared to my last meal there. There were so many delicious options on the menu! I cannot wait to go back.

Sometimes I just want to go somewhere where I can feel at home and be welcomed every time I return to a city. That is what M is for me; when I come in town for business and need to unwind with friendly staff, M is my go-to bar. It is a sweet space with a cozy setting surrounded by hundreds of photos and artwork on the walls that the owner's have collected. I love their three for $15 bar specials that basically amounts to a nice meal for me, which is just right to sample the specials of the day. Their sautéed Brussel sprouts with raisins, the honey wings and the cod fritters with yogurt cream are my favorites. Add to that a wonderful HH white, and I am always set for the night! The staff are wonderful- always pleasant, attentive and happy to please. My friends in Philly love to meet me here, and I love showing off the place to them! Cheers to the new chef and the staff for a job well done from A-Z.

The original "M" was a favorite - lovely warm nights in the courtyard, cozy dark winter nights in the dining room. The food was consistent and delicious. Then a new chef came and the quality deteriorated. We were encouraged by the recent hiring of the chef from Noord - a restaurant we have liked on several occasions, but our recent experience was not a positive one. I have never sent a dish back - but I did at this visit. The fish was so over-salted that it felt like someone had inadvertently dumped the shaker all over the plate. While the restaurant handled the situation well and immediately replaced it with another dish, it was very disappointing. Perhaps most distressing was that there was no dish that was memorable - the other dishes were fine, but it's not what we expected and the price made "fine" even less acceptable.

Party of four. We were eating before a show at the Walnut Street Theatre and celebrating my mother's 70th. They only had a pre fixe menu available. The bread for the table was odd. Almost no flavor and a strange texture with a butter that had carrots in it. Butter and carrots don't stay together well and are just strange. The leek soup was good. The cod entree was so salty as to be virtually inedible. Two people had it and it was the same for both. When we mentioned it to the manager who checked in they removed our wine from the bill as compensation and said they told the chef. The chocolate mousse desert was quite good but the apple cake was tasteless and dry. We have been here before and like the ambiance but this is the second disappointing meal in a row so we will not be going back. The prices for the pre fixe menus were reasonable ($35-45 depending upon the choice) but not when several items were so poorly executed.

Rarely do I ever send food back to the kitchen - almost never - but I had to. My local rainbow trout was sauced to such a salty extreme I couldn't eat it. The waiter said he and the kitchen tasted it and agreed. My companion’s dinner was salty too thougg not inedible. Cocktails were creative and fun. The service was earnest if a bit pushy - it was a quiet evening and I think our server knew from the moment of our arrival he needed us to move it! It’s a lovely room, but the food and seevice don’t live up to the decor.

Great anniversary dinner! Very professional waitstaff and complimentary champagne for our celebration. Food we had was all good - my only comment many of the dishes on the menu had beets (not my favorite) as a part of the meal . Possibly one dish could be offered which is more
generally acceptable to the masses - not everyone in a group is an adventurous eater. We'll be back especially to be outside in the courtyard.

Very nice little restaurant. It's a bit hidden away with no clear advertisement of it's presence. But the ambiance inside is very nice and the menu is nice and appears to be seasonal. The food was all good as were the beverages. The waiters were knowledgeable and the chef even came out to talk about modifications he made for dietary restrictions and to see how the food was. Great service. Just be aware that the bill will likely be at least $100 excluding tip.
