Now that johncarl chef-owner of noord / Dutch has taken over, the food quality increased one thousand percent!
I also want to add that this place is one of the few places that doesn't triple/quadruple their bottle of wine prices..........great price value.
The service could be a bit tighter, otherwise I would come back in a second........... I also noticed a really cool looking bar snack menu!!

A special annual family dinner, a mother treating her sons to a lovely dinner. We were not disappointed, it was all delicious. We had a bit of the whole menu offered, the specials, appetizers, the trout and the beef and THE DESSERTS. The Happy Hour is cozy and not too loud and especially pleasant with the live music. Looking forward to other visits and then the garden in the Spring.

I came back on my way home and tried the bar food (many yummy inexpensive choices!) with my HH wine, and enjoyed meeting the local regulars. This is a really nice bar to hang in; comfortable, music not too loud and a pretty setting.
Will go back!!

M Restaurant is a very nice place, with great food, very good service, good value and nice ambiance for a special dinner, a business meal with a client or a Saturday night date. I very much recommend it.

I reserved at M for a special birthday but unfortunately the garden was previously booked for a wedding. We were seated in the dining room. The chef came to the table and delivered our meals. Both entrees were delicious.

Where to begin...this restaurant has a new team on board and all of a sudden things are different, and for the better!! Service was always a bit iffy in the past and this time everything was perfect. I love their cozy bar, and to listen to jazz in the background was an added plus on a lovely Wednesday night. The dining room is medium sized, and is a very pretty setting to dine in. I loved my leek and potato soup, and my husband had a light, delicious tuna tartare- his favorite. The smoked pheasant thighs were perfectly cooked, and the fishmonger stew was chock a block full of sumptuous seafood. Joncarl and Aila of Noord are the new chefs, and with their extended Philadelphia following and experience have brought M into a new spotlight with a more approachable, relaxed menu. I am looking forward to coming when it will be decorated for the holidays as they have always been one of THE prettiest places in the city to dine during the Christmas season. Bravo to all for an excellent experience from A-Z. We will be back soon!

What a difference! A number of years we dined at M and thought it is OK. After moving out of the immediate neighborhood, we didn't much think about it. However, with Joncarl Lachman from Noord taking over as chef, we decided to give it a look again. Oh my, what a difference. Suddenly, this feels like it could become an important restaurant. The new menu is creative and intriguing. The pot pie alone is reason to go. The pheasant was simply superb and the friend who had the short ribs thought they were as good as he's ever had. In short, this place is really on the upswing. Don't miss it!!!

Unfortunately, the food was not very good. The restaurant was quiet but that was because no one else was in there. Service was extremely courteous and overall outstanding. But again, back to the food. A restaurant should be all about the food and sadly the food was substandard.

As of late October, M has a new chef and a whole new menu. Everything was delicious ...I can't wait to go back to try more things!
AND it is a gem in it's outdoor dining experience, it's hard to find patio dining that is not next to parked cars in the city. We'll be back!

Overall lovely experience. New Wxec Chef personally delivered our Entrees. Good, slightly awkward service, very nice relaxed staff.
Wine-by-the-Glass pours a bit meagre. Recorded Bar music piped into dining room— not good for ambiance & Too loud.
All dishes were very good to excellent, inventive yet straight-forward and fairly priced. Decor was a bit sparse. But a great place: will definitely return.

The evening of our visit was appartently the first night for the chef and his team. It was a prix fixe menu to accommodate theater goers and the meal took much longer than it should have.
The dinner was a disappointment and, even though the chef came out to apologize, it didn't make it any better. My "classic roast beef" was barely palatable.

Locate in the historic Morris House Hotel the M Restaurant is an area of calm in the Washington Square area. Service, food do not quite live up to the standards set by very good restaurants in the area. The garden and baby beet salads were nicely presented and very good. The salmon was delicious and the gnocchi were without finesse and a bit below expectations. The sweet potato tartine did not please us on the day were there and the espresso was cold by the time it reached the table

Usually we love this restaurant, but Wednesday night they decided to have two people play a keyboard and a harmonica. They were good but they were very loud and we couldn't hear ourselves talk.

We complained three times that it should be background music not a concert.

Finally they were able to change our table.

I do not recommend going if they are going to have this kind of "entertainment"

Be smart: eat elsewhere. I have been eating at M since it opened, & it has had its ups & downs, & changes in menu & concept. What it has always had going for it was that fact that it is one of the few restaurants in Philadelphia where you can comfortably eat outside because of the secluded courtyard attached to the William Norris House. We dined on Friday night. The first note of trouble: the restaurant was out of 2 entrees--I could see this on a Sunday or Monday after a busy weekend. Then I ordered a Manhattan; my companion a regular ice tea. The ice tea came rather quickly; the Manhattan was another story. After 30 minutes, our server happened by (she was forever disappearing) & noticed I didn't have my drink. It finally came 10 minutes later with the excuse that it had been sent to the wrong table--seems dubious--& certainly not something it takes 40 minutes to correct. Meanwhile, the ice tea glass was long empty, & no one seemed to think to refill it. There were loads of staff running around (doing I don't know what), & the place was not crowded. About half the outside table were empty. I asked to speak to the manager, who seemed unavailable, but a young woman did come over to wonder if something was amiss & to explain there were some new staff. I asked for some more ice tea for starters & a glass of wine that I had also ordered which maybe went to another wrong table. We shared a very good cheese plate as a starter, & both had the halibut which was exquisite. The bread arrived about 5 minutes after the main course, but then again staff seemed no where to be found. The wine finally showed up, & eventually our dessert, & the check. But, we sat for 20 minutes trying to pay the check. Truth to tell, I think we could have walked out without paying & no one would have noticed. I gave up on paying with my credit card, so my guest & I pooled out money & had just enough cash to pay the bill & leave a 28 cent tip--which was more than overly generous.

I wanted M Restaurant to be wonderful! It was just OK. There are too many restaurants in Center City to go back to "just OK". There was a party outdoors, so we sat inside. The waiter was helpful when asked. The menu wasn't exciting.

Overall we enjoyed the experience.
However, they need to learn more about serving red Bordeaux wine in an ice cold, wet glass and then dropping it onto the table.
Not a quality gesture.
While we were eating many, many, work staff were walking fast through the center of the dining area cleaning/setting up with very loud voices. They were yelling and racing across the room, back and forth towards each other as we tried to sit quietly and enjoy the ambience.
They need to be aware that their behavior has a negative effect on their clients experience. Clean up after everyone leaves the restaurant, not while they are eating dinner. Their agenda to "go home" appeared more important then ours. All of this behavior makes the place feel like a pub or diner not a 5 star priced experience.

I was a bit disappointed with our meal. We tried the tasting menu for what I thought was a very fair price. The first course, salad, was very good, and unfortunately, it went downhill from there. Second course was a sweet potato gnocchi that was okay, but nothing special. Main meal was sesame covered tuna steaks, no although the tuna was perfectly prepared, it had no taste. The dessert was more of the same. If you are looking for a beautiful, quiet garden to sit and enjoy a drink, this place is perfect. If you are a foodie, skip it.

Had a wonderful night at the M Restaurant The Host arrange to have flowers delivered at the table and we had the best seat outside. I had called ahead and explained it was for my wife's birthday. From the minute we got there to the minute we left we had a wonderful time. The mixed drinks were outstanding specifically the grilled peach old fashioned. Wow,wow, wow! I'm impressed beyond words by my overall experience at the M Restaurant. The food, service and ambiance was amazing.

I dined at M Restaurant this past Saturday for a date night and was pleasantly surprised when I was offered the nightly special of "Salmon and Creamy Leeks" . My boyfriend and I also tried a few appetizers and sides and were pleased by both the quality and quantity.

All entire restaurant staff was attentive was attentive, gracious and very friendly especially our server, Steve, and Lowell, restaurant manager. I always have great experiences at the M and look forward to my next visit there!
