M Restaurant at the Morris House

Perfect place for a meal or quick bites when in the area of Pennsylvania Hospital. Happy hour prices from 4-7 when we were there. Small plates were delicious and the meals looked good too. WE had hummus with cauliflower pitas which were outstanding - especially for us gluten free girls. The pork sliders were scrumptious as were the stuffed dates.
Impeccable food in a very relaxed atmosphere. The colonial hotel that it’s housed in is a classic American marvel.
M is a beautiful quiet restaurant. I hadn’t been there for a few years. The bar and drinks were very good. The food was ok, my husbands fish was overcooked and my chicken was overcooked as well. I will return because of the great hostess and atmosphere.
There are a lot of good restaurants in Philadelphia but none has a garden seating option as lovely as M. We sat outside and when the evening turned a little cool, a waiter raced over, unasked, with a huge heat lamp. As to the food, who can beat shuck-a-buck sweetest ever oysters on a half shell, with just enough taste of the ocean to provoke summer nostalgia. Which is why we then ordered the fluke and the scallops which were both delicate, perfectly cooked, with nice accompaniments like crushed mint peas...yumm. Why go to the city's oh-so-hip huge food factories where for the same price you can hear your friends talk and receive the attention of friendly, interesting wait staff.
We had a lovely meal in a setting that was beautiful and calm. The variety of the menu was very appealing. The beet salad with whipped tofu was great (and not being a big tofu lover, surprisingly good). We also had the shrimp and pappardelle. Very delicious.
The vibe is always sophisticated and responsive.
Can't wait to go back.
They were so sweet to set up up outside in the tent and fire up some of the heaters to keepus toasty. The Savignon Blanc and the Oysters were terrific. Great service and being in the garden in October was a treat. With a nice weekend coming, an excellent spot for a lovely dinner.
We shared the 5 cheese platter with a bacon mustard side (wow!!) and other accompaniments that were so delicious, it was a great way to start our meal. I had the scrumptious Mafaldine pasta with shrimp, arugula pesto, and ricotta salata, and my husband had the seared scallops with crushed mint peas and pea shoots. Both were perfectly seasoned and prepared. Our waiter was attentive, polite and thorough. The lemon curd dessert was one of the best desserts we have ever had in any restaurant with its perfect balance of tart to sweet, with a crunchy graham cracker crust and toasted meringue on the top. Bravo to all for an exceptional meal!
Service has to do better. Staff seemed easily distracted by some guests, leaving the rest of us waiting for drinks, bread, and the check. Not their best showing, our worst experience yet at this very nice restaurant.
Lovely spot for an early dinner. We didn’t take into consideration that it was restaurant week, and as a result the kitchen/bar seemed overwhelmed for the first 30 minutes we were there. Once the tables filled up things seemed to run more smoothly, and our meals were delicious.
Staff made our FIRST visit to M feel like visiting family rather than patrons. God Bless all of the energetic staff.
Celebration of an engagement.
Arrived on time for 5:30 reservations. Told maitre d’ and server we had to make 8:00 show at Walnut Street Theater - said it would be no problem. Service was so slow that we had to have our desserts boxed up to take with us. We ate inside and felt that all their attention was being given to the outside guests. Would not return.
Disappointed with the restaurant week selection. Had to ask for bread twice before getting. Meal was rushed. Service not good and she only had 2 tables. Have been there before and it was outstanding. Told there was a new fab chef. I don't think so.
We went to M Restaurant at Morris House during Restaurant Week this
autumn. We chose to order from that menu, 3 courses for $35. There were 3 choices for each course. The appetizer course was very good. Two of us had the hummus with a beet reduction accent, the other the Gazpacho. Both were very good. The entrée course was a choice of either a 5 cheese ravioli, catfish with ham hock and collards, or French cut chicken. Each of us had a different entrée everyone we more than satisfied with their meal. The dessert course was excellent as well. We all chose the cheese and berry cake.
The white bean ravioli was dry and tasteless. We both ordered it and were very disappointed. Our waiter was pretty average and presented us with the wrong bill. I suppose it was an honest mistake but it was almost double the correct bill. He was mildly apologetic. Overall not a great experience. Have to think long and hard about a return visit.
Our waiter was very pleasant however service was very lacking. Had to inquire about our drinks after a good 20 minutes. Brought appetizers but no utensils with which to eat with. Eventually had to go in search of some We sat outside which was very nice. Our meals came. I had the recommended hanger steak, which was a little tough. The other person had the shrimp which she liked. When the bill came he hadn’t charged us the happy hour price for the drinks despite my reminding him we ordered during happy.
I went for outdoor sitting and music. Very disappointed that they had a private event. This is their summer highlight. They should let me know when I made the reservation : (
I had another wonderful meal at a beautiful restaurant. The food, as always, was delicious. I especially liked the Shaved Summer Vegetable Salad. It had a great assortment of vegetables that tasted like they were fresh from the garden. Delicious. Everything else was very good too, not a bad item at all. Our waiter was a new employee and very accommodating. While it it was clear that he was still learning his job and the intricacies of the restaurant, he went out of his way to provide outstanding service in a caring way. Definitely will return to M.
Our server Christian was attentive, knowledgable and personable. It was a wonderful birthday dinner. Thank you.
I am from Montreal, Canada and which is know for is fine dining and restaurant. M restaurant at the Morris house would be a very popular place in my city. The food is great, the staff is amicable and the outdoor terrace is intimate and pleasant.
Beautiful outdoor garden made for a relaxing and pleasurable experience. They have a very affordable wine list and very unique dishes to choose from. Loved the roasted beets with whipped tofu appetizer and blistered shishito peppers. Noteworthy as well were the white bean and basil ravioli and the seared scallops with crushed mint peas. Service was unobtrusive, friendly and attentive. I've travelled around the world for years and have eaten in many excellent restaurants and M matches my highest rating.
I love dining and/or having drinks at M restaurant. Not only is it a beautiful setting, especially in the garden, but the service as well as the food are wonderful. Definitely worth checking out.
My husband and I dined outside last weekend. Garden area is lovely but honestly, I could not eat the meal. Roasted chicken looked like SOUP chicken. Not roasted the way we are used to seeing Roasted chicken. So salty it was inedible. The waiter was kind enough to only charge for my husband’s entree. It was so disappointing.
I contacted M to ensure that there would be an adequate selection for my spouse who has food allergies. We were ensured that the chef would be able to accommodate, yeah!
Arrive and now are told that only the steak would be amenable, Boo!
Order drinks...our party of 4 waiting about 20 minutes...not that busy.
Dinner ordered...entrees good, not very good, just good. Bread-covered in ‘stuff’. Tastes good to me but not good for my spouse due to allergies—no offer of plain bread made, in fact, very little help offered by the waiter or manager.
Not my, or my guests, cup of tea.
Won’t be headed back.
Food was just ok. Lovely outdoor seating with live jazz.
A++ service, good ambience...great night
Awesome food and drinks! And they have live music on Wednesdays and Fridays!
Great service, great Hostess and great music too. We loved the outdoor space and our dinner was delicious good Mojitos too!!
This is a hidden gem of a restaurant with amazing food, exceptional service and an outstanding staff! The cozy bar is only a prelude to a wonderful evening ....thumbs up for this amazing establishment. Patio dining in season is an added bonus -great wine list with a range of offerings. The menu will not disappoint either!
Two drawbacks to an otherwise delightful experience in the garden was the presence of a group of 12, who were, at times quite noisy. Secondly, our waiter seemed a bit distracted--forgot our bread; instead of eliminating anchovies from both our salads, eliminated the dressing as well as the anchovies.
Otherwise, the food and garden surroundings on a warm summer evening were delightful and pleasant.
I thought the dining experience was terrific. We were outside in the garden but the dining room and bar appeared to be very inviting. A nice wine list with several excellent options by the glass. Two of my companions were disappointed at the short menu but I had difficulty deciding between several choices. I settled on the black gemellae with scallops and a glass of French Chardonnay-it was wonderful! The service was efficient and made it to the theater easily.
The M is just a little hidden treasure in the Washington Square area. The patio is beautiful, quiet, and open. The food is fantastic as is the service.
We had a great experience at this restaurant. The food was really excellent. Service was great.
It was a Saturday night and the dining room is kind of quiet. Not sure why. More people should try this place!! I never knew about it until I walked by one day and decided I had to try it. So glad we did.
Sorry, had all hopes for a fab time and was disappointed. They did not ask if we had had a reservation, so Open Table thought we were a no show-- had to clear that up. We couldn't sit outside like we had hoped because there was a wedding. That notification went out a little too late to make new plans. The Floor bounces every time staff rushes past and my hair moves with the air movement. Our waiter did not offer us the matinee specials saying that menu was too limited, when actually only a few items were not offered. My Lyonaisse Salad had hunks of cold lard which was most unappealing. The mushroom and spinish raviolli with truffle sauce was replaced with three cheese ravs in the same thick sauce making it like a paste and difficult to swallow. Waiter also was preoccupied, and brought us 2 of the same desert when we clearly said all three were sharing the one. Table for three at $80. each, whew! Just too much for too little.
We had a vey enjoyable dinner on their outdoor patio. The food and service were excellent and the price was reasonable. We have eaten at the restaurant several times and have always had a very good meal. We have a play series subscription at the Walnut St. Theater. Dining here is very convenient when attending a play at the Walnut St. Theater.
We have been going to M for nearly 10 years and have generally liked the experience. However this time they failed us. When we booked thru Open Table we requested garden seating. To make sure it was clear we phoned the restaurant 2 days in advance to remind them of the Garden seating request. The request was confirmed by the young woman on the phone. When we arrived we were seated inside and advised that a party had booked the entire garden for a rehearsal dinner. Obviously it was booked well before our reservation and call two days ahead. We should have been told so we could have canceled. It was a major disappointment as the weather was perfect for outdoor dining. We will not return as we have been advised that it is booked most weekend evenings. That was not our experience in the past. Our food was inconsistent. A tomato bisque soup was fantastic and the hanger steak was good with a tasty sauce. The salad with greens, bacon etc was just ok. The tuna/scallop cold appetizer was not cold enough and did not seem overly fresh. They did reduce the bill by 20% to make amends for the mistake which was fine but did not make up for the lack of garden seating and their failure to advise in advance when there was ample opportunity to do so.
I am sorry for the miscommunication last Friday night. We pride ourselves in excellent food and service and strive to deliver that to every guest. You spoke with a new hostess, this unfortunate overbooking on our part was a raw lesson for anyone learning the ropes of hospitality. Carly, our event planner, will give you clear information as to what dates will be open for general seating in the garden. For your reference, Carly's number at the hotel is 215 922 2446. I went for dinner with friends on a Wednesday evening. We sat outside in courtyard under the clear canopy. There was no rain nor threat of rain but had there been, we would have been fine. Started with two dozen fresh and exceptionally plump oysters accompanied by two dipping sauces but I never bothered to try those other than the standard. For my main course I had the tilefish which was a new fish to me. It was midway between flaky and rich. The sauce and accompanying greens were delightful.
Throughout our meal a gentleman fingerpicked his guitar sang classics from Doc Watson to Dylan to Taylor to Stones. He has a sweet unforced voice and a demeanor that took you back to the days his appearance evokes, the 60's and early 70's. Great evening!
Restaurant was almost empty. Wedding outside, which must overwhelm the kitchen. 2 tables inside, and we both received apologies for the delays.
Very limited and eclectic menu.
The food was average at best. We have been coming to the M for many years but recently the food has not been very exciting. The food is overpriced and even the cheese tray was less than tasty. In the past the cheese tray was explained to us by the staff, not this time. We are very disappointed and will not visit the M again.
