Lyon Hall Ratings and Reviews
I have been to Lyon Hall several times although it had been a while since my last visit. If you like beer it is probably a good place to go as they have quite a selection. But I don't drink beer and went for dinner. We ordered the short ribs and the gnocchi along with a chopped romaine salad and an appetizer that I don't see on the website but turned out to be some fried salami. The salad was just a big bowl of lettuce but it was as described. The dressing was not very distinctive. The server also delivered a complimentary appetizer of arancini with some aioli. I have had arancini many times and it is usually very flavorful, almost decadent but this was pretty tasteless. The short ribs were a little overcooked but okay. The gnocchi had pears, walnuts, butternut squash, burrata and some greens. Sounds good but actually it was just those individual things on the plate together with no blending of flavors so it just didn't work. With so many choices of good places to eat, I think I will not be returning to Lyon Hall.
Best. Mussels. Ever. We tried the traditional wine base with a touch of creme fresh but plan to go back and try each and every preparation offered. BYOB with a reasonable corkage, even offered to decant for us. Nice Steak Frites - I would go back just for the frites. Mussels and fries, life is good! Cappucino so good, I had two. The creme brulee so delicious, we ordered a second. Yes, decadent. Yes, worth it! Thanks for a great afternoon wine lunch with a friend.
We went for brunch. First I'll say my cappuccino was very good. I hate to provide a negative review, but they really shouldn't be sending out food like this... I ordered "Poached eggs w avocado, smoked bacon, heirloom tomato, red onion, croissant." The avocado was actually a very pale green-gray mush that I guess was someone's take on guacamole. It was spread onto a mediocre (at best) croissant with 2 ICE COLD poached eggs. The eggs were so cold I can't imagine they were even cooked within the hour, or possibly that day. The heirloom tomato was 1 red grape tomato and 1/2 of a yellow grape tomato. The smoked bacon was comprised of 2 cold, very crispy 1-2 inch pieces criss-crossed on the top. I got a couple of bonus slices of bright purple dragon fruit on top which I'm guessing were put on their to distract from the color of the "avocado" because dragon fruit does not go with that kind of dish. In sum, it was poorly described and poorly executed.
Seated within 5 minutes of our reservations. Per our waiter recommendation, had the trout and steak -- both were perfectly cooked, perfectly paired with other ingredients and just delicious. Also had a house salad and pretzel w/dip (just ok). Bread pudding dessert was also good. Was hesitant to go here with friends as other reviews said the atmosphere was too loud. Found that, though lively, we could easily hold a conversation at normal voice levels. Would highly recommend!
Easily the worst service I've received all year, maybe longer. I had to keep flagging down bus boys, other waiters, anyone walking by to try to get a hold of my waiter. I don't know what else he had going on, but working as a restaurant server should not be his chosen career path. The food was decent... Brussel sprouts were crispy and flavorful, the french toast was very buttery and even slightly crunchy in a good way. We received free donuts because the service was so bad, but those were big, dry, and uneventful. This was my second time to Lyon Hall, the first time I went the food was not great, but the service was pretty good. This time the opposite was true. Hopefully, if I go back a third time they'll be able to get both right.
Four of us went for lunch before a class held at GMU-Arlington. No two of us had the same, but every dish was outstanding in its class. The mussels Normandy were superb, with rich and tasty broth, the onion soup was classic and rich. the smoked salmon with bright egg salad was perfectly presented and herbed, and the wiener schnitzel sandwich was perfectly done. Two of us had French white wines, which were impressive and interesting for the price. It was the birthday of one of our party (noted on our Open Table reservation), and the manager was so very gracious, presenting the birthday gal with a menu of deserts that were on the house, and her choice, a chocolate mouse cake with fresh blackberry sorbet on the side, was one of the best we have ever tasted. All in all, the manager and staff made sure it was a memorable occasion, even for a weekday lunch. The food is one of the best values in Arlington.
Food is delicious, and price is right. Very good value for kids' meals. Service is spotty (e.g., waiter could not remember who ordered which entrée, and forgot to make requested changes for child's dish). The volume of the music is too loud under the outside awning, which makes it very difficult to hold a conversation. This was my second such experience under the outside awning. Overall good experience, but wish that we could have sat elsewhere in the restaurant.
