If you have little kids or are entertaining the steak and potatoes crowd, this is NOT the place for you.
Luna Red is a great place for tapas - amazing cheese selection and fresh veggies - all locally grown and purchased. This is a fabulous date restaurant if you are looking for a place to have a drink and share some food. Be warned - Thursday nights and Friday nights in the summer you really need reservations since it is down town and there are a lot of activities going on.
We visit here every summer & I was disappointed when I realized we had been missing out on such a great restaurant the last couple of years. We had four tapas that were excellent. The waiter did an excellent job in advising us as well. We have a dear friend back home that has a Tapas restaurant & I kept sending him pictures & descriptions of what we were eating.
Can't wait to go back & try some of the lamb dishes..The entire staff was very well in tune.
My husband &I ordered several tapas items. The shrimp adobo - great flavor, if you like coconut curry flavor you'll live this one. Our other favorites were wildboar ribs & pork belly. Lastly, lived the chorizo stuffed dates. The only item.that was average was the calamari. But maybe because the other tapas were amazing. Also, liked that you could order half glasses of wine.
My wife and I went to Luna Red during the Saturday night of our stay in San Luis Obispo. The outdoor dining looked very pleasant but they sat us inside, and in a corner though they were not busy inside. This became more frustrating when a couple came in and were given a larger table near us. Still we enjoyed the food very much. The small plates are great for sharing. The highlights were the cornbread and mac n' cheese. I only gave the service three stars because the food came out very slowly, which was disconcerting considering that it was not busy inside at all. What should have been a 1 hr 15 min meal took 2 hours. Our server was very pleasant though. Worth another try; they might have been short-staffed on that particular night.
I had my family in for Memorial Day and we decided to go out to dinner at the San Luis Obispo location. My reservation from several weeks prior asked for a table overlooking the creek but we didn't get one on the creek. Unfortunate. The tapas were very good but the service was slow and we decided to go elsewhere for the main course rather than stay. That too was unfortunate.
The server was friendly and informative but not very available.
My wife and I celebrated our anniversary here and we could not have enjoyed ourselves more. Our server Kristen was vivacious, attentive and knowledgable about the menu and the wine list.the highlights of the meal were the stuffed piquillo peppers, fish tacos & the chicken empandas. Kristen's wine recommendation was spot on. The patio dining was perfect, except for my wife's need to have a heat lamp right on top of us ;-). Overall a great experience and I look forward to returning.
We brought some friends with us who had never been here before and we had the best service and food! Our waitress was attentive, friendly and gave excellent recommendations. We never ran out of water or clean plates for the various courses. We started with the "Wine Picnic" meat and cheese plate and then had the Piquillo Peppers, Beet Carpaccio, Lamb Skewers and the Skirt Steak. Dessert was amazing! We did the Luna Dulce so we could try a little bit of everything and it was completely worth it! Great place to go out for a peaceful and relaxing dinner with friends.
We have eaten at Luna Red before and enjoyed the atmosphere and the food so when booking a Mother's Day brunch it seemed a natural choice. We received the menus and everything looked amazing. We ordered some tapas and main dishes for the 5 people in our party. The tapas were delicious as usual, but the main dishes were very ho-hum. None of us felt like the main dishes were as good as we expected for this restaurant. Maybe brunch just isn't their thing. Service was good except that one meal was very late coming to the table. Background music was maybe just a little loud for brunch; later in the day it would have been fine.
We love Luna Red. The food is excellent as are the drink options. However, the service seems to be an afterthought. Each time we visit, we comment about the wonderful meal, but the terrible service. This visit, we sat for several minutes before we were greeted at our table. We were given the drink specials and then we asked our server to give us a few minutes to decide - much to our surprise, our server never returned to our table. More than twenty minutes later, we decided to leave and found another restaurant around the corner with excellent food and service. We still recommend Luna Red, but have very low expectations for the service.
I was a little disappointed with my experience at Luna Red recently. I made a reservation, and noted it was a birthday celebration. We got our table quickly, ordered, and got a few drinks. The majority of the food was good but not as excellent as it usually is. Considering I chose this place to take my parents, I was sad that they didn't get the same experience I usually had. The waitress forgot to bring one of the dishes we ordered too. As in we never got it, and we didn't even realize it until we were driving away from the restaurant. What really bothered me was that they forgot it was a birthday lunch until we reminded them, and the waitress hadn't even known... I don't put down birthday celebration on the reservation for nothing...
The server was very helpful as we made our decisions. We wanted to do our dinner tapas-style, ordering as we made decisions, and he was accommodating and attentive. He helped us decide on an excellent wine to go with our appetizer and answered all of our questions well. He was a pleasure to work with.
Went for a birthday dinner on a sat night, we made reservations and were seated on the patio.
Food was amazing! We ordered a varied selection ( tuna ceviche, asparagus salad to pork belly and meatballs and everything in-between ) everything came out in a timely fashion and was coursed wonderfully.
The rhubarb tart, Mexican chocolate cake and house made ice cream were the perfect note to end on.
Very uneven dining experience. Cheese and meat board was truly excellent but the other dishes we tried ranged from not so good (crab cakes, less than acceptable- grilled artichokes to quite tasty- piquillo peppers. Service was ok but the mantra seemed to be to sell drinks rather than food.
A bit pricey for the portion sizes. While the food was excellent, we can find better value in the San Francisco/Bay Area for similar cuisine and ambiance. Not sure many people (students and professors at Cal Poly) could afford to dine there frequently. Great sangria!
Made a reservation here for my girlfriend's 21st birthday and they were very accommodating and made it a very special night for her. Despite the fact that we were younger, they didn't discriminate against us as some nicer places usually do. I originally thought the food was a bit pricy for the portion but its packed with so much flavor that it fills you up and makes it worth every penny. Our waiter was great. Definitely coming back here more often!
The food was flavorful and well-prepared with attractive presentation. Plenty of wait help on hand, but they seemed a bit disorganized. When serving tapas, shouldn't you automatically offer clean plates for sharing?
Except for windows to creek, the interior bar/dining area seems quite dark. Perhaps a few brighter decorative highlights could brighten it a bit? The view of San Luis Creek is good, but neighboring merchants should band together to keep it clean (a couple of tossed chairs were lying in the water this time).

Fabulous restaurant! We sat at the bar and ordered just about everything that went by! The charcuterie assortment was perfect. House cured meats, beautiful cheeses and exceptional accompaniments. The cocktails are progressive and delicious. The home recipe mac and cheese is to die for with the chorizo add. Just a fabulous, global meal. The bar was active and colorful. The restaurant was very professionally run and sophisticated. Overall a fantastic experience.
The food was great. We started with a meat and cheese sampler which was very well presented. We then shared the cevicheria sampler which was probably our favorite. Lastly we had prawns which were excellent. Service was nice but a little slow. Two glasses of wine, a beer, and three topas dishes was $75. We would definitely recommend.
I took my girlfriend here for our date night. We sat outside (plenty of heaters to keep you cozy on a chilly night) it was a beautiful night. The service was amazing, food was excellent. I believe the menu changes monthly. Tapas style dining, lots of choices. I recommend this place for any occasion.
They seated us right away. The table was in a corner, private and nice but was a bit loud. We did not mind as we were on vacation from LA and just wanted to relax and unwind. The waitress was a delight. We found a nice Ancient Peaks wine called Renegade. A nice blend of 2010 syrah, malbac, and petit verdot. We opted to try their smaller dishes and had the scallops, the pork belly, and the shrimp to start. Very tasty. Before this we tried the oysters they had on deck and were happy with this as well. We finished off with the coppa and rock blue cheese that had an amazing flavor (our favorite) The waitress brought a nice mustard seed, apricot marmalade to spread on the toast and was the perfect combination to the wine, cheese, and coppa.
Fantastic food. Service was a bit slower-paced than I expected but they were pretty busy (especially for 6pm). It was so dark in the dining room, however, that we were 1 of 4 tables using flashlights and iphone lights to read the menu! Will definitely go back. Hope they make it in this location, as their predecessors have been many.
