In 1912, at the bend of Forest Avenue, 23 year old Joe Jahraus opened the Laguna Lumber Company, he and his father(cigar maker, first postmaster and real estate agent) built the beautiful French Normandy building that is here today. Prior to the lumberyard opening, building supplies needed to be dragged in by mule or floated in on the tides, and therefore, Laguna Beach had less than three hundred permanent residences. After the lumberyard opened, the area began to grow at unprecedented rates, transforming it from a tent town into a thriving city. Laguna Lumber operated for seventy three years, sixty two of them in this location and its' architecture, influenced by Joe's tour abroad in World War I, is one of the most significant influences on the town's aesthetic. Half timbers, mud walls and shingled roofs grace many of the downtown storefronts and homes throughout the city because of this landmark. Today, 384 Forest is home to Lumberyard - a contemporary American restaurant.

Lumberyard Ratings and Reviews
We are visiting from Los Angeles with our kids and made the reservation in hopes that we could have a fairly inexpensive evening out. There was no indication when booking through open table or even through the restaurant’s website that there would be a price fixe menu for the evening. Our plan was to give the girls the cornbread appetizer and share my roasted chicken with them. Instead, dinner was $250 for our party of four, including $24 chicken fingers my four year old didn’t touch and $29 salmon for my seven year old. Adult dinners were $65 each.. The waiter was great and the food was good, but not what we thought we had carefully planned out for our budget getaway. Had we known ahead of time we would likely have made other plans. Spending two weeks grocery budget on one dinner out may have driven me to drink...but I couldn’t afford it.
The food was very good and good sized portions - most took go boxes. We had a 6PM reservation and were on a relatively tight schedule for getting to the Laguna Playhouse for a 7:30 show, and we made it, but it was tight. The seated a few of the party early and there rest of us (5 total) a bit ahead of the reservation - yeah! Only negative (but it depends upon your age group - is that the noise level can be difficulty to hold a conversation. We were in the dining area, but just behind the bar. Perhaps the outer booths were quieter.
We are regulars at Lumberyard. The place has a great ambiance. If you are in the mood for good drinks and above average comfort food this is your spot. The fish dishes are also done very well so it’s a nice blend of choices. Kids menu is excellent and the noise level makes it kid friendly.
One of our two favorite restaurants in the area. Great location if attending the Laguna Playhouse (walking distance) or the festivals, and parking conveniently nearby. Fun shopping in the area. Their beef stroganoff is the best I've ever had, and the meatloaf is fabulous. Not nearly as noisy as some comparable places.
My husband and I have been here several times, and it is always" TOP NOTCH" . We did make our reservation thru Open Table and did mention it was our 33rd Anniversary but no mention was made of it at the restaurant, and that is OK, but it would have been nice to have had it mentioned, but otherwise the restaurant is always flawless, it's a great place to be and eat!!!!
Was looking forward to our first meal here. Unfortunately, the first impression of the restaurant at the hostess stand was less than inviting . The staff was competent, but they were not particularly friendly and had a bit of an attitude. Outside of our interactions with the hostesses the experience was very pleasant. Our waiter was very good. Everything we ordered was amazing with the exception of our main course, which was the meatloaf. This dish, which I was really looking forward to, was very bland, the meatloaf itself was overcooked and dry and the bacon on the outside was burnt. With this said, the oysters were amazing and the wedge salad and French onion soup were very good. Despite the downsides of this visit I wouldn't hesitate to return to this restaurant for another try.
We come to the Lumberyard fairly often and with so many choices in Laguna Beach, that really says something! The food is ALWAYS good although the service can be hit and miss. This time it was hit! Perfect. Sorry I cannot recall her name but she was spot on. Thank you, Lumberyard!
One of the most memorable dining experiences in a long time!! Everything was outstanding, from start to finish. Always recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting or looking for a great place to eat, whether a celebration or just wanting great tasting food. As always, had a fantastic time.
I live in yorba linda and visit the lumberyard about twice a month. this visit was our seating
next to two (2) families sharing (2) booths. kids were unruly with no correction. i should have
been given another seating at the lower level not upper level.
I UNDERSTAND NOISY KIDS AS I HAVE THIRTEEN (13) GRANDKIDS. BUT AT THIS LUNCH MANY
TABLES WERE OPEN.
The Lumberyard is a wonderful restaurant for special occasions as well as everyday dining. The food is outstanding and a great value. The menu is versatile and unique. I love the ambiance, especially outside. It can get a bit noisy inside, but not enough to deter me from returning. It's one of my favorite restaurants in Laguna Beach! The service is also outstanding!
Loved the restaurant décor and it was a fun place to visit for a party or just dinner with friends! Dinner was very good and the service was also very good. I was a little disappointed that, because we were not seated in the immediate bar area, due to no available tables, that we were unable to benefit from the Happy Hour prices.
We came here for dinner before the Pageant of the Masters. It is a very easy walk to and from the beach and to this establishment. There were four of us. The restaurant was rather dark and somewhat bleak inside. Also, one of the noisiest places I've eaten at. It creates a good social atmosphere if you don't mind yelling across the table.
I was vacillating between the staple burger ( no ,it did not come with staples) and the meatloaf.
Our very genuine and pleasant waitperson highly recommended the meatloaf, apparently one of the signature dishes. Fortunately I didn't order it, as one of our dining mates did. It was too finely grated meat, with very high sodium level and too many added smoke flavors, as did my burger patty. We also ordered the Ahi sandwich which was reported as being very good. I ordered French fries with my burger...my bad...they were coated with something that made them even more crispy, and I paid for it a few hours later with major acid indigestion.
So all in all the food was just O.K., prices were correct for what we received. And as for the service, this was the best part of our dining experience.
