Luma Ratings and Reviews
The food is very good. The escargot and bone marrow appetizer melts in your mouth, the main course was the chef special, delicious. But the service was different. We did not order wine, we were not asked if we wanted wine and the wine menu was left on the table even when we ate our apps... We were asked if we wanted water, we thought by ''flat'' it means tap water, when we received the bill, we were charged for it. It was not explained clearly by the serving staff.
But I would go back for the food witch was above my expectations.
Yesterday I ate lunch for the third time at Luma with a friend. I love this restaurant. When we arrived the music was quite loud and we asked if it could be turned down, which it was, right away. The food is absolutely delicious, especially the charred cauliflower dish, the tables are not crowded together, the seating is so comfortable, and the service is excellent. We've had the same waiter each time - a man who is originally from England called Joel. He's just outstanding at his job and we've commented to each other each time that he's the gold standard in the restaurant service industry. It's always hard to drag ourselves away from Luma - it's so comfortable that you want to stay there all afternoon. But we can always go back again, very soon.
Girlfriend and I decided to try it since we live just down the street. We dine out quite a bit and aren't in the least picky. Having said that, this was one of those places where the portions are small, and the food is mediocre, at best - but the presentation is everything. Although we appreciated the pretty designs on our plate, we won't be coming back. I ordered duck, and received 3 toonie sized medallions on my plate. My gf ordered the steak, and asked for Chicago medium, the steak came back with sear marks on it, when she asked about the 'chicago medium' cook, the server said 'oh, we don't have a flat grill, and can't do that' - so that would've been fine, except the steak was very chewy. Bill was $170 before tip, which is pretty standard, but the often-frequented Keg would've been a far better option. We really wanted to like this place, because the ambiance was good. Unfortunately, would not go back or recommend...
As the official restaurant of the TIFF building I expected Luna to be fun and exciting. Instead, it was a bit business-like.. definitely not a Friday night type of experience. The food is good, but the cocktail and desert are a bit outdated. Overall, very pricey to what you’re getting.
We were celebrating an anniversary and from the moment we arrived, we were given VIP treatment, including champagne on the house. Our server was knowledgeable and friendly and our food came out hot and fresh. The menu was superb and flavourful and the portions were relative to fine dining. We never felt rushed in the 2 hrs we were there. We were also seated promptly at the time of our reservation, which was appreciated. Would recommend for celebrating a special occasion!
The duck was tasty but under cooked and some of it tough.
It was our 43rd wedding anniversary. We were comped with some Champagne & a desert. Both were appreciated.
Out main server was perfect. Good timing, very understanding of our needs, good conversationalist
Flat iron steak areived luke earm on a cold plate. Baked halibut was dry. Salads were skimpy. Asked for strmaed veggies with no oil or butter and they arrived doused in oil. They did replace with steamed asparagus. This was all in stark contrast to a good experience we had in the summer. Won’t be going back.
My first time at Luma and we were not disappointed! One of our friends had eaten there many times before because he is an avid TIFF fan, but even when TIFF isn't on, he doesn't mind going there. Had an excellent burger with excellent truffle fries, served by our excellent waiter!!
Spoke to mgr about our table location right next to a large party, kept getting chair bumped the whole time. People walking and hitting my chair, loud. Very bothersome. Mgr didn’t care, didn’t comp anything, not even caring. Very bad feelings after. Will not visit again.
Great food should be appealing to the eyes and taste. Luma does pretty well on the former, but not so great on the latter. The presentation of their plates is excellent, but we were less than impressed with the execution. To begin with, everything was overseasoned. The edamame was so salty, it was almost inedible. My halibut, although visually interesting, was a disappointment in flavour: the tomatoes - which were supposed to be grilled - were raw. The sourdough was basically stale bread, and the halibut was undercooked. Luma is in a great location - just above TIFF and in the heart of the theatre district - and they advertise for a slightly upscale meal, but they just didn't deliver.
Although very accommodating for Gluten-free with the server making substitution suggestions or pointing out a better choice, the food was extremely salty to the point of not being palatable and the root vegetables, fish and the beets in the beet salad were all very under cooked. I would not recommend this restaurant. Nice presentation does not justify an expensive meal.
I have been to Luna a number of times... I never knew they had a patio. Very nice patio, it was a fall evening and we were even offered blankets to keep us warm. Nice to have a patio above the street and not squished on a busy sidewalk). I found it very quiet. Service was very friendly and efficient.
As always a great meal. Local and seasonal ingredients. Always creatively prepared and healthy without the use of excessive salt, fat, or cream added. Our go to place before heading to theatre. Service is always good and food and drinks arrive in a timely manner!
My twin sister and I were celebrating our birthdays and we had a wonderful waiter who remembered us from a previous dining experience. We love Luma and chose it to celebrate our milestone birthday. It was a warm night, we could see the CN Tower and our neighbourhood, and we were content. The service and food were great and we would come back in an instant...
We went after a late afternoon ballgame and managed to get a seat on the patio The food was amazing. Great wines old are the majority of them came from Canadian wineries. We settled on a wonderful California Chardonnay Not sure what service were so poor is the place wasn't that busy
Making the reservations online was super easy. Staff was very accommodating of our large (separate bill) group and good about calling ahead to confirm. They are obviously detail oriented because they were careful to ask about allergies, group dynamics, what we had going on after dinner, etc.. Set-up was ideal. Unfortunately, first few minutes of my visit was complicated by a loud building alarm. Other than that, the atmosphere was great. Service and food were fantastic! Everyone enjoyed their meals. I thought my meal (duck breast and roasted peaches) fell in the top 10 meals of my life! Only criticism, there were some guests that would have liked more drink service. Thanks Luma, for an excellent night!
