Luma Ratings and Reviews
Prior to attending the performance at the Princess of Wales Theatre, we found that Luma was an excellent location as it is right next door to the theatre. With the bitter cold weather, that was an excellent bonus. Our meals and service were exceptional. We did not feel rushed at all during our meal and could take the time to linger in the warmth before showtime.
Came to Luma for somewhat innovative menu (on paper) to spend the evening with family. Food was good, well prepared, but nothing was overwhelmingly spectacular. Some of the dishes, like the carrot salad, were just plain bland. Given the price tag, expected more. This is a good option if you are catching a show, as is within walking distance of several theater/concert venues, but would not make the trip for restaurant alone.
All 4 guests had a wonderful meal and conversation. The seating is well set so you arent seating on top of your neighbors table like some other notable restaurants, which allowed my guests to converse with each other easily and without shouting over the other conversations. The meals were delicious and well presented. Timing between the courses perfect. Price is what was expected, 4 appetizers, 4 main courses, drinks and bottle of wine, with 25% tip $375.
The food is very good. The escargot and bone marrow appetizer melts in your mouth, the main course was the chef special, delicious. But the service was different. We did not order wine, we were not asked if we wanted wine and the wine menu was left on the table even when we ate our apps... We were asked if we wanted water, we thought by ''flat'' it means tap water, when we received the bill, we were charged for it. It was not explained clearly by the serving staff.
But I would go back for the food witch was above my expectations.
Yesterday I ate lunch for the third time at Luma with a friend. I love this restaurant. When we arrived the music was quite loud and we asked if it could be turned down, which it was, right away. The food is absolutely delicious, especially the charred cauliflower dish, the tables are not crowded together, the seating is so comfortable, and the service is excellent. We've had the same waiter each time - a man who is originally from England called Joel. He's just outstanding at his job and we've commented to each other each time that he's the gold standard in the restaurant service industry. It's always hard to drag ourselves away from Luma - it's so comfortable that you want to stay there all afternoon. But we can always go back again, very soon.
Girlfriend and I decided to try it since we live just down the street. We dine out quite a bit and aren't in the least picky. Having said that, this was one of those places where the portions are small, and the food is mediocre, at best - but the presentation is everything. Although we appreciated the pretty designs on our plate, we won't be coming back. I ordered duck, and received 3 toonie sized medallions on my plate. My gf ordered the steak, and asked for Chicago medium, the steak came back with sear marks on it, when she asked about the 'chicago medium' cook, the server said 'oh, we don't have a flat grill, and can't do that' - so that would've been fine, except the steak was very chewy. Bill was $170 before tip, which is pretty standard, but the often-frequented Keg would've been a far better option. We really wanted to like this place, because the ambiance was good. Unfortunately, would not go back or recommend...
As the official restaurant of the TIFF building I expected Luna to be fun and exciting. Instead, it was a bit business-like.. definitely not a Friday night type of experience. The food is good, but the cocktail and desert are a bit outdated. Overall, very pricey to what you’re getting.
We were celebrating an anniversary and from the moment we arrived, we were given VIP treatment, including champagne on the house. Our server was knowledgeable and friendly and our food came out hot and fresh. The menu was superb and flavourful and the portions were relative to fine dining. We never felt rushed in the 2 hrs we were there. We were also seated promptly at the time of our reservation, which was appreciated. Would recommend for celebrating a special occasion!
The duck was tasty but under cooked and some of it tough.
It was our 43rd wedding anniversary. We were comped with some Champagne & a desert. Both were appreciated.
Out main server was perfect. Good timing, very understanding of our needs, good conversationalist
Flat iron steak areived luke earm on a cold plate. Baked halibut was dry. Salads were skimpy. Asked for strmaed veggies with no oil or butter and they arrived doused in oil. They did replace with steamed asparagus. This was all in stark contrast to a good experience we had in the summer. Won’t be going back.
My first time at Luma and we were not disappointed! One of our friends had eaten there many times before because he is an avid TIFF fan, but even when TIFF isn't on, he doesn't mind going there. Had an excellent burger with excellent truffle fries, served by our excellent waiter!!
Spoke to mgr about our table location right next to a large party, kept getting chair bumped the whole time. People walking and hitting my chair, loud. Very bothersome. Mgr didn’t care, didn’t comp anything, not even caring. Very bad feelings after. Will not visit again.
