You know how sometimes you order a few items and when the bill is presented, you say, "What happened? What did I get for all that money?" Lulu was like that -- we thought the prices were elevated for what we received. The service was nice but not remarkable, the venue was a bit loud and not climate-comfortable, and the food was OK, but not worth going back for in a city with so many bona-fide dining choices.
Unfortunately dinner for our party of six was something of a disappointment. I have not been to LuLu much in the past 5 years. Maybe twice. I was more frequent before that. The menu is solid-- pretty middle of the road with a few eye catching touchs. The food was was fine overall if unexceptiobal. The pork loin was praised by all. The fresh prawns and spaghetti was another high point. Everything was oversalted, however-- a classic restaurant cheap trick.
The glaring defect was the wine. I ordered a white chateau neuf ($59) it was dead. No debate about it. A good two years past it's pull date. Our waitress was good though and took it back. Playing it safe I then ordered a 2015 ZD Chardonnay($66). Completely standard predictable CA wine. Right? No. It smelled of paint thinner. No finish. I've had this wine several times. And this bottle was defective.
I've ordered 100s of bottles in restaurants and have probably sent back three before.
Getting two bad bottles in a row means the wine is being mishandled. Lulu's lacks someone in control of the cellar. The prices say they are serious about their wine. But the lack of quality control shows otherwise.
So if you go, enjoy the ambience. The food is okay. Skip the wine.
Still cookin' after all these years. Had the LuLu staple of the roasted chicken and platter of grilled veggies last Saturday night. It is always a crowd pleaser. The staff was excellent and the dining room has such a comfortable and well spaced feel to it.
Not as crowded as it used to be. I think this is due to the proliferation of other fine restaurants, not due to a decline in LuLu. And it's nice to be able to get a table on relatively short notice.
The hostess was a bit short and rude when she welcomes us and showed us to our table. It was a sort of special occasion with my fiancé and parents, and she sat us at an awkward table right off the bar. When we asked if we could sit at one of the nicer booths, she rudely said "those are reserved" Mind you it was 9pm. Sure enough, not all those booths filled up, and we felt a bit like "not good enough" or something. Our waitress and servers were really nice however and the food is amazing!
My husband and I met our son and his girlfriend on a Friday night for cocktails and dinner. The cocktails were good. The mussels appetizer was very good. The entrees were kind of ho-hum, not too inspired. We did order the molten chocolate cake and that was spectacular. Not sure we would go back, and definitely don't understand all the stars in the reviews. This was just a B restaurant, nothing outstanding.
The appetizer and salad were average at best. The chicken, our main course, was pink in some places, and my dining partner and I both had upset stomachs the next day. The apple pie dessert almost made up for a very disappointing dining experience. The apple pie was by far the highlight of the evening.
Lulu has a new fall menu, which we truly enjoyed. For an appetizer we had the mushroom risotto and pear bruschetta, both truly divine. My entree was the prawns with spaghetti, spaghetti squash, Meyer lemon and Aleppo pepper and it was mind-blowingly delicious. My dinner mates also enjoyed their lovely entrees (both meat and vegetarian). Then the desserts were a special surprise: pumpkin cheesecake (oh my God), apple torte (delicious), and creme brulee that way you want creme brulee to be served every time, with just the thinnest layer of carmelized sugar at the top. Service was great from beginning to end, and we couldn't be more appreciative for a lovely evening at Lulu. (Oh, and thanks to the bartender for an excellent selection of white wine!_
Following an afternoon of much walking at SF MOMA and a rainy slog through construction detours we finally arrived for our reservation at LuLu. It was worth the trouble. Our waitress was friendly and efficient. The food was very good. We started with a delicious country pork pate - two generous portions but served with only two toasts. Four would have been better.
We chose the rosemary chicken and the pork loin, both cooked on a wood fire rotisserie. Both dishes were well prepared , tender and juicy. We finished with a wonderful apple pie with cinnamon ice cream.
LuLu has an extensive wine list and good selections by the glass, plus a full bar.
Lulu has great food and the cavernous space provides a terrific sense of openness. The crowd is lively and well heeled, without being pretentious.
I spent a three and a half hour dinner with a friend and never felt rushed by the excellent service people. I particularly appreciate the half priced drinks until 7.
Consistently great food and service. I keep promising to order something other than the rotisserie chicken, but it's so good, I can't help but order it every time. The night we were there, it was quite loud, mostly due to an active bar scene and big conference at Moscone. Still, totally worth it.
This was for my wife's birthday party, and the restaurant happened to be virtually empty. We had the place to ourselves. The food was really good -- particularly the steak for 2 (or 3) and the appetizers (fruit de mer platter, calamari, and mussels all stand out as being particularly good).
We had a large party of 14 people and to my surprise there was no one in the restaurant on a Saturday night. It was very quiet and that should of been my first clue but these reservations were made a month prior. The food was fair and overpriced. The waitress ordered more than we asked for so we had to send a few things back. She forgot to add the Mac and Cheese and when we got it i swear it was from a box. One salad looked amazing but was made with Romaine lettuce....for $15 and it could feed 2-3 people. It was family style and you would think they would make enough food for at least half the people on the table. The salads fed maybe 3 people. I would not go here again.
I liked the ambiance - nice but still comfortable and casual. The food was good but nothing amazing and definitely overpriced. My main concern was the service. The waiter took forever to take our orders and said "I'll come back to you" when someone said "Um..let me see". He forgot to bring water after being asked and never refilled the glasses. When our plates seemed close to done, they were immediately taken from our table. The check came immediately after we got coffee. It was fine for a short business lunch, but I wouldn't come again on my personal dime.
Big disappointment. Was there for a late lunch at 2:30PM. Now we know why the place was empty: not the LuLu that I once knew. The bread on the BLT type sandwich was burnt, they were out of decafe coffee (no thank you on an Americano), service was slow: we had to ask for the bill & refills on the sodas. So slow that we couldn't have desserts. We were treated as more of an annoyance, rather than welcome guests. Not what San Francisco dining is about, especially for one person who's from out of town and another who's local. The positive was the sweet potato fries: so light, fluffy, hot and very good!
Still Good but has been better – the scene seems to have passed Lulu by. My partner's prime rib seemed good; the blackened brussel sprouts were fine but I've had better; ditto the pizza which was not really as good as my neighborhood pizza joint's. The waiter was a little frazzled; the host, nicely, stepped in – she was great. Prices seem high for value. Very quiet at Sunday dinner time. Still enjoyable (and peaceful) place near the Bridge on the way back to the East Bay, a pleasant treat.
Were were looking for a lunch spot near the SFMOMA. We booked a 1pm reservation for lunch. The place was empty. Our waitperson did not understand a classic martini order and when she delivered the cocktail she did not bring a cocktail napkin. I asked for one and she brought me a dinner napkin. The food arrived so fast we did not have time to enjoy our cocktail prior to the meal. The food was very boring. The salt shaker was clogged and I was brought another one that was clogged. The menu was not creative. It is overpriced for the value of the meal. I do not recommend LuLu. Sad, I wanted to like it.
I have been to Lulu many times since it opened. In a VERY quiet hour with few other tables busy, we had a server who looked literally, like an unmade bed. He was efficient and friendly, but was unshaved, had a very wrinkled shirt as if it came right out of the dryer, unbuttoned at the top with a loose tie and simply looked bored.
In contrast, the person refilling water/iced tea was immaculately clean and professional. Perhaps he should become a server.
