Lula Cafe Ratings and Reviews
This was our second time to Lula Cafe and it was better than I remembered. We had guests from out of town and we wanted to take them to a great, local place. Our meal was fabulous and the service was impeccable. It's a pleasure to dine somewhere where the wait staff is not clearing plates as people finish their meal, but wait until everyone is finished. I highly recommend Lula Cafe for excellent and unusual food and 5-star service in a relaxed atmosphere.
This place is a real neighborhood gem. I love going here for special occasions or date nights. Most recently, I went here for NYE and had a fabulous time. The food is spectacular, the servers and hosts are friendly, the ambiance is great. I'm a big fan of their cookie plate. I would recommend Lula a thousand times.
Lula's is wonderful! The food is fantastic. We got to sit right at the window on a wintery night and it was such a wonderful view. We had beet bruschetta, roasted vegetables and wonderful selection of cookies that my husband ordered for our dessert for my birthday. Food- fantastic. Wine- awesome. Services- very non-pretentious. When can we go again?
A group of seven ate at a large table here late on a Saturday evening. Five were in their mid-20's; and 2 , well let us just say... loving parents. The wine, the ambience, the extraordinary help by the waiter that took extra time to explain tastes.... it could not have been better. The food was exquisite. A must go to!
I have been here several times and the food has always been very good. This time it was our waiter that was an issue. He was pushy with food and drinks and ordering fast and then after we paid our bill we sat to chat for a minute and he asked if we needed anything else and when we said no, he said ok because there is another reservation for this table. It was a Thursday night at 9:30, there was no one waiting and didn't see anyone that needed to be sat. When you buy 2 bottles of wine and tip well I expect a more cordial experience.
We went to this restaurant based on Trip Advisor reviews. It was a solid meal and tasty. Our server was kind and helpful with suggestions. Portions were NOT large--my New York steak was 3 or 4 relatively thin slices of steak...not an entire steak, but the price reflected a whole steak. I would return here if it were convenient, but for the price and portions, I would be happy to explore other venues. Upon our departure, we each received a hearty muffin to enjoy for breakfast the next day--nice touch, indeed!
The food at Lula is always great and this visit was no exception. Great attention to detail and fresh, in season menu! Our server was also particularly great this visit--friendly, attentive while also still giving us time and space to talk, and he made some spot on recommendations for us to try. Love this place!
Imaginative food, perfectly prepared. And well-made drinks (I had a Manhattan). The beet and goat cheese bruschetta is excellent; the four pieces are geneous. The radish salad with smoked whitefish dressing was interesting, but not a standout. The highlight was the sweet potato soup, for which there should be a word other than "soup" because it transcends that description: matsutake mushrooms, crab apples, and a deeply layered broth made this one of the best soups ever. The cookie plate was enough for two diners (and tasty). And the service was perfect - water was regularly re-filled, we didn't feel ignored, and we were not rushed.
Loved this menu, fresh crisp flavours and excellent choice of veggie food- no i am not veggie but the appeal was just too much to ignore. Great wine list Telmo Rodriguez delish however could have a few more accessible price points. This aside the best food we had in Chicago & we ate everywhere😉
Menu has many options to please everyone but not just run-of-the-mill dishes -- creative, but not "out there." We had two delicious starters -- Brussels sprouts and radish-based salad. Then we split the turkey sandwich and the Indonesian peanut butter sandwich (with bacon added). Normally we wouldn't have chosen sandwiches for dinner on a Saturday night, but they sounded too yummy to pass up and we were right! Anyone who enjoys good, solid, but inventive food should not miss Lula.
Went for my husband's birthday, we have been here many times for brunch and loved it but this was our first time for dinner. I had told the person who called to confirm our reservation that it was my husband's birthday and our waiter brought us out some complimentary champagne which was a great surprise. Our waiter was really attentive, gave great recommendations and spaced the food out well. Food was really good and the portions weren't overwhelming. One pasta dish wasn't that warm and the cookie dessert plate was only ok but everything else was great and we had a great time.
Overall, the meal was expensive (but typical of Chicago prices, $144 for two, with 2 drinks each, 2 appetizers and 2 meals...also 2 cappuccinos). However, it was really excellent! My spinach/frisee/peccorino/apple salad was great as was my husband's braised red cabbage with elderberry sauce. My steak was fantastic, and came with ginger/pear sauce with beans and cheese. Absolutely fantastic!!
Great food with even better service!
Wanted a good meal and later time (after 10 pm due to coming from jazz fest downtown), criterion which Lula Cafe met with ease, as their kitchen stays open later than many on weekends. I was greeted by friendly smiles at the host stand and given a choice of outdoor tables. There, both the runner and server were incredibly pleasant, making both menu choices better informed and me feel quite welcome.
While I chose to sampled two of their appetizers and forego a main course, the portions were sufficiently large that this sufficed for dinner. I started with the Penryn Orchard Figs & Burrata which came garnished with hazelnut oil, sesame, aged sherry and a side of grilled bread. the burrata was indeed quite creamy had the desired lightness one expects from freshly made batch. Teh fig and sherry combination added a touch of sweetness and a texture change, both of which served as good compliments to the buratta. The bread was so delicious that I ate both pieces, despite knowing I was having pasta afterwards.
My second course was the whole wheat spaghetti "alla chitarra," which added marinated eggplant, anchovy, oregano, and ash breadcrumbs. The pasta avoided the dryness that being made of whole wheat often seems to do while the eggplant and anchovies combined to give great flavor to the dish. Served without sauce, this was in no way a dry dish and the flavors were distinct enough to enjoy each of them.
Topped off with an espresso and some more light conversation with a most gracious server, Giavanna, the meal was complete.
As Lula's is a mere 2 blocks from the Blue Line, this is an easily accessible place to enjoy a very good meal at a reasonable price combined with a welcoming atmosphere and outdoor seating.
