About Lucques

Since opening in 1998 Lucques has garnered extraordinary accolades and is now recognized as one of the country’s best restaurants. It's California cuisine with French and Mediterranean influences is served in the warm and intimate setting of the rustic carriage house of the original Harold Lloyd estate.

One of the reasons for the all the acclaim is the Sunday Supper, the night that best exemplifies the original mission of owners Chef Suzanne Goin and Sommelier Caroline Styne, by offering seasonal prix fix menus that re-create the atmosphere of a relaxed family dinner.

We went to Lucques for the first time on New Year's Eve. We were at the first seating, however we never felt rushed. The service and the food were outstanding. The wine pairing was the way to go and each wine went perfectly with each course. It was a special evening made more special by the expert staff in the front and back of the restaurant. Lucques was the perfect choice for NYE. We definitely want to return and are also interested in their Sunday Suppers.

I rarely publish details of my meal experience at restaurants - I tend to just fill out the major points. However, I feel compelled to forewarn folks this time. Like most of the bad reviews on OpenTable, the major issue we had with Lucques was the service. We were seated promptly. However, we sat for 30 mins. with no one approaching us if we were ready to order. Trust me, we timed it and made sure everyone noticed how we kept checking our watches. I ended up flagging someone just so we can at least order something to drink. Meanwhile, there was a female server taking care of the 3 tables that surrounded us. The couple next to us were seated 5 mins. before us, and the server had already taken their order. Through the course of our meal, we had to keep flagging someone to get any assistance or to place additional orders. We ended up being helped by various different people as opposed to having a designated server. We are of Asian descent but more American than the folks sitting next to us. We could not help but think that our race may have been a factor of how inattentive the server was of our table - as opposed to the couple next to us who were visiting from Texas where the server went as far as to make sure their food allergies were addressed. We found the food to be delicious, but they definitely failed on customer service. It saddens us that we will never return to this place. We've received better treatment at more prestigious restaurants than this place.

Lucques offers excellent food, with local produce and seasonal choices. The food is always scrumptious, thoughtfully prepared and presented with care and attention to detail. All of the staff work hard to make the meal a pleasant experience, quickly remembering preferences. They are responsive to questions and work hard to manage any food allergies that may need attention.

The special cocktail menu evolves and is always tasty, too.

After many years being away (abroad) we returned to Lucques to find that the service, food and comfort had not changed, all excellent. Highly recommend for all reasons listed above. Will certainly be returning.

We were disappointed. We'd been to the restaurant before and liked it, but this time the food was very disappointing. The service was terrific, however, and we sat on the enclosed terrace, which was nice. But for those prices, I would not go back again--the food was mediocre at best.

We went there for our Christmas lunch. 1 of the 4 of us has been to Lucques before which is the reason we decided to have our celebration there. We ordered an appetizer to share with our drinks. The appetizer was good. We waited over 20 minutes for our entrees (2) braised short rib sandwiches, a burger and a gnocchi. We were 1/2 way finished before anyone came to see how
the meal was. There many other restaurants in Los Angeles and when we left all 4 of us decided
we'd never return

Lucques was great as always. We usually sit in the back patio area, but this time we were in the dining room and it was equally enjoyable. All 4 people in our party enjoyed everything that we had--lamb neck ragout with gnocchi and the duck breast, particularly. Drinks were great.

This is a city where "old favorites" disappear quickly because people want something new all the time time. I am delighted that Lucques is still with us. It is the first place I think of for a special occasion, or just a quiet meal. Food is always superb, service excellent.

Quite disappointed by this dinner experience at Lucques. We had been looking forward to some time and I had made a reservation a month in advance. But we felt stuck in a draft at a table that looked like an add-on; all the doors were open and we were chilly. We told all the waiters, but none suggested to seat us elsewhere or anything.
There seemed to be many waiters, actually, one of them so bored that he would lean on my chair: when I told him, he didn't seem to understand what he was doing wrong!
The food was okay, but it was so dark, some of the artistry was completely lost... Cleary this restaurant is just resting on a reputation earned a long time ago, and isn't trying anymore.
There are so many good restaurants in L.A. now: skip this one as it is completely overpriced.

The food at Lucques is delicious, but the service is garbage. It took 1hr15 for our food and the server never asked if we wanted drink or water refills...the bread guy kept coming up and giving us more. Also, the service is odd where they won’t pick up empty plates until everyone is done eating. But of course, they don’t tell you. Instead, they have a bus boy pacing back and forth very intensely looking at your table and will grab empty glasses, but not an empty plate. I had to argue with the guy to take my plate! He reached over to my empty drink and water glasses and I offered him my plate as well— he exclaimed that “I don’t normally do that!” Confused, I sat there with no water, no drink, and waited until the rest of my party was finished. Was the food good? Yes. Would I be back? Maybe. Would I recommend it to someone who hasn’t been there before? Probably not; I don’t think it’s worth your money or time.

The setting is elegant, the service attentive, but not intrusive and the food was amazing. We had the Nantucket scallops appetizer that was delicious. The Portuguese style pork and clams was very flavorful. The ricotta dumplings with hazelnuts both homey and sophisticated. I'd been wanting to try Lucques for years and am happy that my husband agreed to go for my birthday. It was a memorable meal.

The quality of Lucques food is undeniable. Its worth every penny. That said, despite an advance reservation wherein it was made abundantly clear that our dinner would be a special occassion and then later on a verbal confirmation as such, no accomdation was made for a table commensurate with that request. It was, it should be noted, a first seating booking on an evening when demand was low (plenty of empty tables). A fuss was made and a better table was procured. Never the less it tainted the experience.

Year after year, the Sunday Supper at Lucques offers creative, high-quality, delicious meals at a reasonable price. Never the same twice, the prix fixe dinner -- starter, main, dessert -- gives one a sample of the high-caliber, cutting-edge cooking that Goin's crew turns out consistently and smoothly. A wine pairing is optional, or you can order off the by-the-glass list. This Sunday (Nov 19) was one of her cookbook dinners where she invotes a food professional who has written a book and cooks off his/her menu, so we got four courses for $75 instead of the usual three for $52. Delicate gougeres spiced up with paper-thin slices of speck on a bed of kabocha squash chunks, followed by ricotta dumplings -- much like gnocchi in their delicacy -- and lobster bits and mushrooms in a light creamy sauce, then spatchcocked whole quail, beautifully roasted and lying on a soubise of scallions decorated with roasted grapes (!!), and to finish the best tarte tatin I have ever had with almond ice cream -- think haute pie a la mode, and they must have a whole bunch of individual cast iron ramekins to make the tartes.

Informed, attentive-but-not-intrusive service, and a casually elegant setting complete the experience. You can't go wrong. Subscribe to the menu e-mail and you can decide, each week, if this week's menu speaks to you. And if it does, you won't be disappointed. Unless you're a vegetarian or vegan -- that might be tough.
