Lucia Restaurant & Bar - Bernardus Lodge Ratings and Reviews
What a horrible dinner! We have been to Lucia over 20 times but our dinner on February 15th was unacceptable!
First, the service was excellent. However, a server cannot make a bad meal good.
I ordered the foie gras dumplings. Disgusting! The broth was like Campbell’s beef broth with some soy and hoisin sauce thrown it. The dumplings were crudely made and had very little if any foie gras flavor. They were much more like Trader Joe’s frozen pork dumplings.
I ordered the New York strip steak. The meat was flavorless and the dark gooey sauce on the plate was unpleasant. The mushrooms and vegetables on the plate looked terrible and had that same gooey sauce on them. The carrots were good once one picked them out of the other stuff on the plate.
I could only eat half the steak - not because I wasn’t hungry but because I couldn’t tolerate the unpleasant flavors. Note to the chef: How can one screw up an expensive steak?
My dinner companion had a pork chop. The pork was tough, tasteless and dry. The brussels sprout slaw on the plate was way too heavily salted. He needed a saw - not a knife - to cut this geriatric pig.
We didn’t have dessert. We didn’t need any more disappointment and I wanted to get home to fix a snack.
This is our second time at Lucia’s. The service is always great and the ambiance is lovely. The menu is creative. Perhaps the only criticism is that some dishes seem overly fussy and the ingredients do not stamd up to rich sauces at times. Found it best to stick with simpler dishes with fresh ingredients. Would certainly recommend.
Had breakfast here mid week. We are staying at the Bernardus Lodge and this is the restaurant at the lodge. The service was great, and our meal was good except for the homefries. They seemed dry and not so fresh. Which did not really detract from the experience considering how beautiful the place is.
For such a classy restaurant, we were appalled by the service. When asked to differentiate between a special and a regular menu item, we were told one had “different stuff”....... REALLY?!?! When our guest ordered a bourbon drink, a gin and 7-up was delivered.....we are locals, Lucia won’t be on our “guest “ list anymore.
Would love to see more vegan friendly options. Although the salad was very nice and our waiter was excellent I didn't get enough to eat. We love dining in the bar area and had the other grain vegan option you offered the evening prior to our reservation. That was also very good.
Food was mediocre and overpriced. Cocktails very expensive. $20 for a martini, $16 /glass for their own Chardonnay. Manhattan prices in Carmel valley. If you want bread with dinner it is a $3 charge for 4 slices of homemade bread with a dip. Kind of silly for a restaurant with over $30 entrees. Hotel is dog friendly but shouldn’t allow dogs in fine dining restaurant. Was next to a large poodle and did not have a service dog designation on it.
It’s been a long time since I have seen a server use a tray for Service. My wife asked for a straw and it was brought out on a tray. Dishes were served as well as removed in the same manner using a tray rather than a one armed balancing act. So nice to have excellent food served in a manner which represents the Chefs efforts in preparation.
Want to feel like you've left Silicon Valley for a European moment? This spot hits the mark. Both the outside and inside ambience transport you to a lush lovely romantic interlude. The wine is devine and our wait person quite personable while not becoming intrusive.
Lucia has great atmosphere with live piano at night or guitar during the day. We stayed on site at the lodge had dinner there both nights. The food was excellent. We had the halibut special, venison, duck and the mushroom and egg tart and my favorite foie gras. Make sure you try the queen bee cocktail.
We had not been back to Bernardus Lodge since their renovation. We'd enjoyed Marinus restaurant and was happy to hear that the chef was still there at Lucia. We went all out with the tasting menu with wine pairings. The amounts were just right...we were able to finish all the courses and not feel stuffed. Every dish was beautifully presented and delicious. The wine pairings were generous and each complimented their dish. We sat in a romantic booth... the room is a bit more casual than before but it still feels like fine dining. The prices felt fair for the high quality of everything we experienced.
Food was wonderful and service was even better. My wife and I dined here to celebrate our anniversary and had a great evening. Were were staying at the Bernardus Lodge but would have dined here anyway even if we had stayed in Carmel instead. Definitely worth the drive if you want a special meal.
“Nice” but ultimately disappointing experience. We were excited to celebrate a 50th here. Seating was awful, lighting so bright that the entire party felt we were in an interrogation area. Food was mixed; appetizers were tasteful, steaks were patchy (medium rare lamb was a hit, one medium steak was spot on, another medium steak was disappointingly overcooked). Mentioned to the waiter with no reply. Surprised to have to order a dessert to have a small onsite birthday candle. Not at the standard we have enjoyed for other milestone celebrations - Grammercy Tavern, Gary Danko and the like.
We had very good food at Lucia. My mother had the scallops and I had the lamb. Both were excellent. I appreciated the excellent service with the proper etiquette and timing. Most restaurants do not even know that one is supposed to serve from the left and take away from the right.
They also have a nice selection of wine by the glass which includes European wines.
Excellent food and wine. Unusual dishes with excellent flavor, allowing you to take a small step outside of your comfort zone and enjoy it at the same time. Beautiful location, excellent service, delicious food. Be aware that the portions are small, but extremely satisfying. I would 100% recommend dining here.
