Luau - Grand Hyatt Ratings and Reviews
Set in the lovely Grand Hyatt Hotel, this was a fun evening that balanced humor, entertainment, and an opportunity to learn about the history of the Hawaiian culture. The MC did a nice job of leading the audience through the evening, the layout was comfortable, and the food was better than expected. The dessert was lacking in variety and flavor but for an evening of entertainment, amble quantities of food, and an open bar all night with table service, this is a great deal. Fun for the whole family, groups of friends, and/or couples on honeymoon/anniversary trip.
This is a solid luau for a small scale location. Don’t go there expecting a big time Maui/ Oahu production, that’s not what it is trying to be. Great food, fantastic host, and solid production value steps away from the front desk in the Grand Hyatt’s courtyard. Space is limited so I would imagine it fills up quickly in the high season.
While the entertainment was beyond spectacular, the buffet management was subpar for the price and place. The food was served buffet style-nothing wrong with that-however by the time some of the last tabes were asked to the buffet table it was dark and you were unable to even see the food you were eating. In addition, there was no time to take advantage of the great dessert bar.
The rain and wind kept them from completing the show, but no one was willing to help us with compensation or arranging a new show for us. The food was great and the wait staff tried their best to keep everyone happy and comfortable, but I was extremely disappointed with the management and their lack of concern for the fact that we paid full price for half of the experience. Would not recommend.
this was an indoor luau in a very corporate dining hall setting with no decor. neon exit sign glowing behind the performers, beige walls. nice performances and decent food taking place with uncreative wedding vibes. the hotel used the weather excuse - "we're so sorry, but we didn't want to risk being rained out" when there was a 0% chance of rain in the forecast. the hotel clearly didn't have the same concerns for the outdoor wedding happening at the same time. we exited the luau to a gorgeous evening with clear skies. BOO! DO NOT ATTEND!
Our ticket said to be there at a specific time-only to stand in a very long line for 25 minutes. The waiter for our table completely ignored me and twice, I went to drop off my own dishes and get my own beverage. A rowdy group of 5 males, who were known to the staff, were seated next to us and a beverage was spilled onto my mother from the man seated next to her-and again, no help from the wait staff.
The MC of the event was especially "cheesy" and needed new material. The male dancers were TERRIBLE!! 2 of them didn't even know the dances!
The Liau was billed as " authentic ", but yet the little girl who came out to dance was wearing a "glitter " hula skirt and the female dancers in one dance wore silly hats that looked like they were purchased at Walmart.
The food was fair.
Really dissatisfied and disappointed-not worth the money or price of admission.
The food was delicious and the show was entertaining. The servers were quick to replenish drinks and clear away dishes. The Luau stories and dancing was fun. The only comment that we had at this Luau concerned the ambiance. You are seated in an indoor courtyard. While it was beautiful and worked out fine, we had hoped for a more dramatic backdrop/view. The food was great and the service was outstanding. The venue and the show were good.
I loved the luau emcee. He did a great job of instructing the guests while still remaining in chatachter. Everything went smoothly. The dancers were fabulous and the food was tasty. I don't drink, but the mai tais were flowing. The event starts with early evening light and ends in the darkness of night, perfect to see the fire dancers. I recommend going.
Luau was better that we expected. We have been to many luaus before and were going to this because my 7 year old had never been to a luau in Hawaii before. We were staying at the resort and it was convenient. Line up early to get the best seats but it was hot waiting in line. They served cold punch while we were waiting. Food was better than expected for this type of event and they allowed time for seconds. They served the traditional roasted pig as well as grilled fish, chicken and steak. The salad and fruit selections were good as well. They also served all you can drink beer, wine and Mai Tais. Our waiter was very good and he kept your drink full - didn't even need to ask. the show was good and the host was very engaging. The show featured dances from all over Polynesia. We wished the fire dancer performed longer. Overall it was an enjoyable evening at the hotel.
We arrived about an hour early since seating us first come first served; it was hot and sunny in line, but cocktails from the hotel bar eased it a bit, plus about twenty minutes before they let us in, the started serving punch to people waiting in line. Having gotten there so early, we we're able to get seats front and center. It's all the wine, beer, Mai Tai's, and tropical juices you can drink. The food was great - a smaller selection than some if the other luaus we've been to, but I loved the variety, and everything was very tasty, especially for a buffet. Yes, the show is pretty touristy, but it showcases dances and music from all over, not just Hawaii, and it wasn't overly long. We had a great time!
Definitely a go-to. The buffet had a wide variety and was well-stocked for a three-course. The venue was fantastic-beach backdrop. Just be sure and verify that it is held outside, they decide at 1PM day-of to move things indoors depending on weather. The dances were explained and the dancers were energetic. When we went, they had a novice performer in addition to the pros. It was her "recital" of sorts-yes! they are still teaching/showing traditional dances! Live music and felt festive like a true luau that a family would host. Audience was a mix of newlyweds, honeymooners, and families with older and younger kids. Only drawback was the audience. At the time we went, they didn't really engage with the MC nor the dancers. Maybe a different day would mean a different crowd...All in all, though, happy we picked this one over the larger theatrical productions bc of the venue and the local flavor of the performers. Good food, easy-going atmosphere, beautiful performance and beautiful venue!
We were a bit hesitant to book this luau after reading some reviews about it being inside of a ballroom, not on the beach. Not the case, we were right over the beach on a large grassy area, drinks were free flowing, food was amazing and the show was very well put together. Overall a great experience and something we will for sure see next time we're back.
We've have been to maybe 4-5 luau's and this one was by far the best on the island! The MC did a great job sharing the history and was very entertaining . The food was delicious and it was well organized. As a note - if you booked on open table you still need to purchase tickets through the Hyatt and also pick up you're tickets at the concierge's table at the hotel prior to getting in line. I would highly recommend the luau at the Grand Hyatt in Poipu.
Buffet was good. The seating was a little odd. Long tables with plastic lawn chairs. It felt more like a backyard BBQ than an upscale Luau... at $225 per couple that's what it should've felt like. I would've preferred a private table.
The show was good but not what I was expecting. Check in was 5:15, dinner served around 6 and then the show started at about 7. Because of this it ran pretty late. I only stayed until the end because I was waiting for the fire twirling act which of course was the last thing they did. Same 4 male and 4 female dancers for every act. It got stale 30 minutes in.
While it was convenient to have it at the resort (our current resort, Turtle Bay, makes you drive 15 minutes away to the cultural center for theirs) I was hoping for more.
I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND TO MY FRIENDS TO WATCH IT SINCE IT'S NOT WORTH IT. SHOW IS BORING PLUS I WAS DISAPPOINTED SINCE I WASN'T HELD OUTDOOR. PRICED IS TO MUCH FOR NOT THAT MUCH OF ENTERTAINMENT. THE WORST PART WAS INDOOR. SO ON THE NEXT DAY WE WENT TO LUAU KALAMAKU AND IT WAS THE BEST SHOW EVER.. IT'S WORTH OF THE MONEY.
