Italian
Love and Salt is a story that begins with Cafe Pierre, a restaurant birthed by Guy Gabriele in 1977 to bring a taste of France to Los Angeles’ South Bay. While Cafe Pierre was a beloved part of the community for nearly 37 years, in 2014, Guy and his daughter Sylvie Gabriele, now the owner of Love & Salt, closed the restaurant to bring new life to the iconic space.

Love and Salt is a philosophy: that food needs only two ingredients to be great. It’s a sensibility that informs the feeling in the restaurant and the dishes on the menu — Italian-inspired with Southern California soul. An approachable wine list and classic cocktail program similarly reflect the vibrant SoCal setting of the restaurant, located just steps from the Manhattan Beach pier.

Cashed out 20K OpenTable points to dine here because I of the pending LA COVID restaurant shutdown. It was truly sad knowing their outdoor dining would cease soon because the patio dinner my daughter and I had at L&S Tuesday night before Thanksgiving........was truly fantastic and memorable. We enjoyed their Italian fare that was very delicate and unpretentious, just the right flavors and hints of sophistication and simplicity. Grilled Octopus salad where the Octopus was so tender and juicy, Prosciutto & Pear salad with a mild shaved cheese that was not salty or bitter but a simply delightful combination. The Japanese Mushroom Pizza, Rigatoni Pomodoro Salt Spring Island Mussels and Wood Oven Meatballs finished our truly impressive entrees without the aftertastes of overpowering garlic or herbs....hats off to whoever the skilled master chef is in the back of the house. Mary Joe took care of our table so nicely and professionally. Buttered Rum Pudding and Tiramisu were excellent choices to end the evening. Highly recommend L&S for outstanding Italian cuisine that’s not all over your face and shirt.....hope this place survives this latest shutdown. Truly the best Italiano by the beach!!

Server forgot to put in one of the food orders - really bad when the food comes for only one person and we had to wait 20 min for the other order. The wine was excessively expensive. Overall, a very disappointing evening.

Always a pleasure to dine at Love & Salt. My favorite dining experience in the South Bay. They check all the boxes, mainly the quality and experience of every dish is “par excellence”. Rich, flavorful, authentic, quality ingredients made with love.

Do yourself a favor and book a table. You won’t be disappointed.

Tonight’s feast consisted of:

PERSIMMON & BURRATA
GRILLED BROCCOLINI
MARGHERITA Pizza
SPAGHETTI ALLA CHITARRA CACIO E PEPE (gluten free)
STROZZAPRETTI COSTOLETTE: Beef short rib ragu
ROASTED FREE-RANGE CHICKEN (whole) (OUR FAVORITE)
BUTTER RUM PUDDING
NONNO’s TIRAMISU
CHOCOLATE PEANUT BUTTER CRUNCH

BRAVO

Had a birthday lunch with an old friend. Start to finish, everything was great, and our server was excellent. Dare I say, they have the best tiramisu I’ve had outside of Italy?

Kanpachi Crudo is amazing - would return just for this. Meatballs are good. Creste Di Gallo Midollo (bone marrow pasta) is good if you enjoy bold rich flavors. Strozzepreti Costolette (short rib ragu pasta) is great - one of those "even better the next day" dishes. Service is excellent - the whole team operates like a smiling machine.

Absolutely loved the duck egg pizza. The grilled octopus salad was so tasty and the octopus so tender. They have a cute outdoor seating area with a nice view of the ocean, and social distancing/masks are enforced. Enjoyed a great meal! Will be back!

The service here was perfect! They forgot to add the sausage on our pizza, and they brought us a new one without even asking. Also they were very mindful of social distancing, and we never felt uncomfortable. I appreciated that I was able to make reservations even though it was a weekend, and I now it can get very busy on the weekends. Despite the outdoor seating with social distancing, the service was great and the food was amazing! We enjoyed every dish that we ordered!
Overall I enjoyed my experience here, and although it is a bit of a drive for me, I would definitely come back!

This meal was just....average. The service was great, our server was excellent. She was attentive and knowledgeable. A food runner brought us the wrong food and drinks TWICE, but not a big deal.
The food, however, was the main reason for 3 stars. The server explained to us that the restaurant was a "sharing" concept. Ok, perfect. So we order the meatballs. It came with 3 goodsized meatballs and one HALF of a piece of bread. There was so much sauce and ricotta to spread and we had a half a slice of bread. It should have come with at least a full slice cut in half.
The freeekilicious salad, while good, feels out of place on the menu. It is full of grains and I'm not sure how it pairs with pasta dishes? It also felt a little one note.
We also had the short rib pasta dish. The short rib looked and tasted more like a bolognese sauce. It tasted fine.
The chocolate pb crunch was SOOOO good, however, it looked nothing like the pictures online. It came out and it was literally the size of two strips of a Kit Kat bar. In fact, that is how the server described it. It was so rich and luscious but it was literally two bites for my boyfriend and I.
I got a cocktail that didn't make me want to order another. I don't know, it just wasn't a memorable dining experience, especially for $110. We got two drinks, two apps, and a pasta dish and it was $110. Three days before we went to Nicks and got more food, three cocktails, and bigger portions for $120.
I just wasn't wowed. I wanted to like it but there really isn't anything that would make us want to go back.

While I enjoyed trying this place for the very first time, I was a little disappointed at the fact that they do not off brunch, making the menu very limited. It might be helpful, if OpenTable update the menu since that was the main reason I even picked this place.
